Le but en vue duquel l'amour est ainsi accompli en nous, c'est que nous ayons de l'assurance au jour du jugement.
D'autres traduisent : "L'amour est rendu parfait en nous en ce que nous aurons de l'assurance." D'autres encore : "Voici comment l'amour est rendu parfait en nous (afin que nous ayons de l'assurance au jour du jugement), c'est que tel il est, tels nous sommes."
Jean revient à l'idée déjà énoncée dans 1Jean 2.28 et 1Jean 3.19-21. Cette assurance devant Dieu, nous l'aurons au jour du jugement, au grand jour où notre destinée éternelle sera arrêtée.
Dans 1Jean 2.28, Jean exhortait ses frères à demeurer en Dieu pour avoir cette assurance. Dans 1Jean 3.18-21, il la faisait dépendre d'un véritable amour fraternel. Dans notre passage, elle est le privilège de celui qui demeure dans l'amour et par là même demeure en Dieu et a Dieu demeurant en lui. (verset 16)
Enfin, cette assurance est motivée par le fait que notre position devient ainsi semblable à celle de Jésus, notre Sauveur : tel il est, tels nous sommes en ce monde. Tel il est, maintenant dans la gloire du ciel, et non tel il était pendant son séjour sur la terre. Le verbe au présent montre que Jean dirige les regards de ses frères vers le Christ glorifié, parfaitement uni à son Père, et les invite à réaliser, dans l'amour, une semblable union entre eux, au sein de ce monde, qui leur est hostile, mais qu'ils ont pour mission d'amener à la foi en lui donnant le spectacle de leur parfaite unité. (Jean 17.21)
