1 à 13 La reine de Séba.

Ce fut sans doute à la suite des expéditions de la flotte à Ophir, port de mer situé dans le voisinage de son pays, que cette reine entendit parler de la sagesse de Salomon, ainsi que du nom du Dieu qu'il adorait. Cette visite n'est pas la seule de ce genre que Salomon. ait reçue (4.34 ; 10.24 ; 2Chroniques 9.23-24). L'historien sacré a raconté celle-ci comme la plus mémorable. Rien, en effet, ne témoigne davantage de la splendeur unique de ce règne, que ce long et difficile voyage entrepris, par une femme, non dans un but politique, mais simplement pour voir et pour entendre le roi dont la renommée était parvenue jusqu'à elle. Le souvenir de cet événement s'est conservé à travers les siècles, même hors des limites de la Palestine, comme le prouvent les légendes que deux peuples de l'antiquité ont brodées sur ce voyage, à savoir les Arabes et les Abyssins. Jésus lui-même a cité comme exemple à ses auditeurs cet épisode de l'histoire du règne de Salomon (Matthieu 12.42). Dans les Psaumes et dans les prophètes, la visite de la reine de Séba est le type des hommages que tous les païens rendront un jour au Roi suprême d'Israël, au Messie. Comparez Psaumes 72.8-14 et Esaïe 60.6.

La reine de Séba. Séba (ou Schéba), nom d'une province de l'Arabie Heureuse, au bord de la mer Rouge, probablement l'Yémen. De là le nom de reine du Midi que lui donne Jésus. Cette contrée était très riche en or, en aromates et en pierres précieuses, dont elle faisait un commerce étendu (Jérémie 6.20 ; Esaïe 60.6 ; Psaumes 72.10). La tradition arabe donne à cette reine le nom de Balkis. Les Abyssins la font venir de Séba en Abyssinie (Esaïe 43.3) ; mais l'orthographe des deux noms est différente en hébreu.

Ainsi que du nom de l'Eternel, littéralement : selon le nom de l'Eternel. A la renommée de Salomon était étroitement liée la gloire du nom de l'Eternel ; car la puissance et la sagesse extraordinaires de ce roi étaient envisagées comme un effet de la faveur particulière de son Dieu.

Par des énigmes. Les Orientaux, et surtout les Arabes, ont une singulière prédilection pour les énigmes, les questions épineuses et les jeux de l'esprit (Juges 14.12 ; Ezéchiel 17.2). Josèphe raconte que Salomon et Hiram se proposaient l'un à l'autre des énigmes, sorte de paris dont le vaincu payait le prix. En raison des mots précédents : ainsi que du nom de l'Eternel, on ne doit pas exclure les questions relatives à la religion.

La reine de Shéba est venue rendre visite à Salomon pour bénéficier de sa sagesse et améliorer de ce fait, son savoir.

Notre Sauveur, Jésus-Christ, a mentionné que le roi recherchait vraiment Dieu, soulignant ainsi la stupidité de ceux qui méprisent Son salut. C'est par la patience et la prière, par la lecture diligente des Écritures, en consultant les chrétiens avertis et expérimentés, et par la mise en pratique de ce que qui nous a été enseigné, que nous serons délivrés de nos difficultés. La sagesse de Salomon fit plus d'impression sur la reine de Shéba, que toute sa prospérité et sa splendeur de la cour. Une « excellence » spirituelle émane des bénédictions célestes et du contact avec les chrétiens véritables, excellence que nul ne peut contester. Dans ce texte, la Vérité divine était manifeste.

Tous ceux qui, par la Grâce, sont amenés à entrer en communion avec Dieu, ne rapporteront qu'une partie du plaisir et des avantages obtenus, en parcourant les voies de la Sagesse. Les saints glorifiés, et d'autres témoins encore, ne pourront rapporter du ciel, que la millième partie de ce qui leur a été annoncé, 1Corinthiens 2:9. La reine de Shéba rappela à Salomon, à quel point les personnes de sa cour étaient heureuses.

Combien plus, pouvons nous en dire des serviteurs de Christ : Bénis sont ceux qui séjournent dans Sa demeure ! Ils L'adoreront éternellement.

La reine fit un noble présent à Salomon. Le Seigneur n'a nul besoin de nos dons, mais Il nous laissera continuer à les Lui offrir, pour que nous puissions Lui exprimer notre gratitude. Le croyant, celui qui vit « en » Christ, viendra vers Lui, à la fin de son service, pour Lui présenter avec promptitude le résultat de sa tâche, et en demander une nouvelle, attendant avec intérêt, le jour où, ayant quitté son corps terrestre, il sera éternellement en présence de son Seigneur.
