Élie doit annoncer la fin de la sécheresse
1 It happened after many days, that the word of Yahweh came to Elijah, in the third year, saying, "Go, show yourself to Ahab; and I will send rain on the earth."2 Elijah went to show himself to Ahab. The famine was severe in Samaria.3 Ahab called Obadiah, who was over the household. (Now Obadiah feared Yahweh greatly:4 for it was so, when Jezebel cut off the prophets of Yahweh, that Obadiah took one hundred prophets, and hid them by fifty in a cave, and fed them with bread and water.)5 Ahab said to Obadiah, "Go through the land, to all the springs of water, and to all the brooks. Perhaps we may find grass and save the horses and mules alive, that we not lose all the animals."6 So they divided the land between them to pass throughout it: Ahab went one way by himself, and Obadiah went another way by himself.7 As Obadiah was in the way, behold, Elijah met him: and he recognized him, and fell on his face, and said, "Is it you, my lord Elijah?"8 He answered him, "It is I. Go, tell your lord, 'Behold, Elijah is here!'"9 He said, "Wherein have I sinned, that you would deliver your servant into the hand of Ahab, to kill me?10 As Yahweh your God lives, there is no nation or kingdom, where my lord has not sent to seek you. When they said, 'He is not here,' he took an oath of the kingdom and nation, that they didn't find you.11 Now you say, 'Go, tell your lord, "Behold, Elijah is here."'12 It will happen, as soon as I am gone from you, that the Spirit of Yahweh will carry you I don't know where; and so when I come and tell Ahab, and he can't find you, he will kill me. But I, your servant, have feared Yahweh from my youth.13 Wasn't it told my lord what I did when Jezebel killed the prophets of Yahweh, how I hid one hundred men of Yahweh's prophets with fifty to a cave, and fed them with bread and water?14 Now you say, 'Go, tell your lord, "Behold, Elijah is here";' and he will kill me."15 Elijah said, "As Yahweh of Armies lives, before whom I stand, I will surely show myself to him today."Élie se présente devant Achab
16 So Obadiah went to meet Ahab, and told him; and Ahab went to meet Elijah.17 It happened, when Ahab saw Elijah, that Ahab said to him, "Is that you, you troubler of Israel?"18 He answered, "I have not troubled Israel; but you, and your father's house, in that you have forsaken the commandments of Yahweh, and you have followed the Baals.19 Now therefore send, and gather to me all Israel to Mount Carmel, and four hundred fifty of the prophets of Baal, and four hundred of the prophets of the Asherah, who eat at Jezebel's table."Élie et les prophètes de Baal au Carmel
20 So Ahab sent to all the children of Israel, and gathered the prophets together to Mount Carmel.21 Elijah came near to all the people, and said, "How long will you waver between the two sides? If Yahweh is God, follow him; but if Baal, then follow him." The people answered him not a word.22 Then Elijah said to the people, "I, even I only, am left a prophet of Yahweh; but Baal's prophets are four hundred fifty men.23 Let them therefore give us two bulls; and let them choose one bull for themselves, and cut it in pieces, and lay it on the wood, and put no fire under; and I will dress the other bull, and lay it on the wood, and put no fire under it.24 You call on the name of your god, and I will call on the name of Yahweh. The God who answers by fire, let him be God." All the people answered, "It is well said."25 Elijah said to the prophets of Baal, "Choose one bull for yourselves, and dress it first; for you are many; and call on the name of your god, but put no fire under it."26 They took the bull which was given them, and they dressed it, and called on the name of Baal from morning even until noon, saying, Baal, hear us. But there was no voice, nor any who answered. They leaped about the altar which was made.27 It happened at noon, that Elijah mocked them, and said, "Cry aloud; for he is a god. Either he is musing, or he has gone aside, or he is on a journey, or perhaps he sleeps and must be awakened."28 They cried aloud, and cut themselves in their way with knives and lances, until the blood gushed out on them.29 It was so, when midday was past, that they prophesied until the time of the offering of the offering; but there was neither voice, nor any to answer, nor any who regarded.30 Elijah said to all the people, "Come near to me"; and all the people came near to him. He repaired the altar of Yahweh that was thrown down.31 Elijah took twelve stones, according to the number of the tribes of the sons of Jacob, to whom the word of Yahweh came, saying, "Israel shall be your name."32 With the stones he built an altar in the name of Yahweh. He made a trench around the altar, large enough to contain two measures of seed.33 He put the wood in order, and cut the bull in pieces, and laid it on the wood. He said, "Fill four jars with water, and pour it on the burnt offering, and on the wood."34 He said, "Do it a second time"; and they did it the second time. He said, "Do it a third time"; and they did it the third time.35 The water ran around the altar; and he also filled the trench with water.36 It happened at the time of the offering of the offering, that Elijah the prophet came near, and said, "Yahweh, the God of Abraham, of Isaac, and of Israel, let it be known this day that you are God in Israel, and that I am your servant, and that I have done all these things at your word.37 Hear me, Yahweh, hear me, that this people may know that you, Yahweh, are God, and that you have turned their heart back again."38 Then the fire of Yahweh fell, and consumed the burnt offering, and the wood, and the stones, and the dust, and licked up the water that was in the trench.39 When all the people saw it, they fell on their faces. They said, "Yahweh, he is God! Yahweh, he is God!"40 Elijah said to them, "Seize the prophets of Baal! Don't let one of them escape!" They seized them. Elijah brought them down to the brook Kishon, and killed them there.La pluie revient
41 Elijah said to Ahab, "Get up, eat and drink; for there is the sound of abundance of rain."42 So Ahab went up to eat and to drink. Elijah went up to the top of Carmel; and he bowed himself down on the earth, and put his face between his knees.43 He said to his servant, "Go up now, look toward the sea." He went up, and looked, and said, "There is nothing." He said, "Go again" seven times.44 It happened at the seventh time, that he said, "Behold, a small cloud, like a man's hand, is rising out of the sea." He said, "Go up, tell Ahab, 'Get ready and go down, so that the rain doesn't stop you.'"45 It happened in a little while, that the sky grew black with clouds and wind, and there was a great rain. Ahab rode, and went to Jezreel.46 The hand of Yahweh was on Elijah; and he tucked his cloak into his belt and ran before Ahab to the entrance of Jezreel. -

1 Bien des jours s’écoulèrent, et la parole de l’Éternel fut (adressée) à Élie, la troisième année en ces termes : Va te présenter devant Achab et j’enverrai de la pluie sur la surface du sol.2 Élie alla se présenter devant Achab.3 La famine était intense à Samarie. Achab fit appeler Abdias, préposé à sa maison. – Or Abdias craignait beaucoup l’Éternel ;4 lorsque Jézabel massacrait les prophètes de l’Éternel, Abdias avait pris cent prophètes, les avait cachés cinquante (par cinquante) dans une caverne et les avait nourris de pain et d’eau. –5 Achab dit à Abdias : Va par le pays vers tous les points d’eau et vers tous les torrents ; peut-être se trouvera-t-il de l’herbe, de sorte que nous garderons vivants les chevaux et les mulets : nous n’aurons pas besoin d’abattre du bétail.6 Ils se partagèrent le pays pour le traverser ; Achab alla seul par un chemin, et Abdias alla seul par un (autre) chemin.7 Comme Abdias était en chemin, voici qu’Élie le rencontra. Abdias le reconnut, tomba la face contre terre et dit : Est-ce toi, mon seigneur Élie ?8 Il lui répondit : C’est moi ; va dire à ton seigneur : Voici Élie !9 Alors Abdias dit : Quel péché ai-je commis, pour que tu livres ton serviteur entre les mains d’Achab pour me faire mourir ?10 L’Éternel, ton Dieu est vivant ! il n’est ni nation ni royaume où mon seigneur ne t’ait envoyé chercher ; et quand on disait (que tu n’y étais) point, il faisait jurer le royaume et la nation que l’on ne t’avait pas trouvé.11 Et maintenant toi tu dis : Va dire à ton seigneur : Voici Élie !12 Puis, lorsque je t’aurai quitté, l’Esprit de l’Éternel te transportera je ne sais où ; j’irai faire mon rapport à Achab qui ne te trouvera pas et qui me tuera. Cependant ton serviteur craint l’Éternel depuis sa jeunesse.13 N’a-t-on pas rapporté à mon seigneur ce que j’ai fait quand Jézabel tuait les prophètes de l’Éternel ? J’ai caché cent prophètes de l’Éternel, cinquante par cinquante dans une caverne et je les ai nourris de pain et d’eau.14 Et toi tu dis maintenant : Va dire à ton seigneur : Voici Élie ! Il me tuera.15 Mais Élie dit : L’Éternel des armées devant qui je me tiens, est vivant ! aujourd’hui je me présenterai devant Achab.Élie se présente devant Achab
16 Abdias, étant allé à la rencontre d’Achab, lui fit son rapport. Alors Achab se rendit à la rencontre d’Élie.17 Lorsqu’il aperçut Élie, Achab lui dit : Est-ce toi qui jettes le trouble en Israël ?18 Élie répondit : Je ne trouble pas Israël ; c’est toi, au contraire, et la maison de ton père, puisque vous avez abandonné les commandements de l’Éternel, et que tu t’es rallié (au culte des) Baals.19 Envoie maintenant rassembler tout Israël auprès de moi au mont Carmel ainsi que les quatre cent cinquante prophètes de Baal et les quatre cents prophètes d’Achéra qui mangent à la table de Jézabel.Élie et les prophètes de Baal au Carmel
20 Achab envoya (des messagers) vers tous les Israélites et rassembla les prophètes au mont Carmel.21 Alors Élie s’approcha de tout le peuple et dit : Jusques à quand clocherez-vous des deux côtés ? Si l’Éternel est Dieu, ralliez-vous à lui ; si c’est Baal, ralliez-vous à lui ! Le peuple ne lui répondit rien.22 Élie dit au peuple : Je suis resté moi seul prophète de l’Éternel, et il y a quatre cent cinquante prophètes de Baal.23 Que l’on nous donne deux taureaux ; qu’ils choisissent pour eux un taureau, qu’ils le découpent et qu’ils le mettent sur le bois, sans y mettre le feu ; quant à moi, je préparerai l’autre taureau, et je le placerai sur le bois, sans y mettre le feu.24 Puis invoquez le nom de votre dieu, j’invoquerai le nom de l’Éternel. Le Dieu, qui répondra par le feu, c’est celui-là qui sera Dieu. Tout le peuple répondit : D’accord !25 Élie dit aux prophètes de Baal : Choisissez pour vous un taureau, préparez-le les premiers, car vous êtes les plus nombreux ; invoquez le nom de votre dieu, mais ne mettez pas le feu.26 Ils prirent le taureau qu’on leur donna et le préparèrent ; et ils invoquèrent le nom de Baal, depuis le matin jusqu’à midi, en disant : Baal, réponds-nous ! Mais il n’y eut ni voix ni réponse. Et ils sautaient devant l’autel qu’il avaient fait.27 A midi, Élie se moqua d’eux et dit : Criez à haute voix, puisqu’il est dieu, il pense à quelque chose, ou il est occupé, ou il est en voyage ; peut-être qu’il dort et qu’il se réveillera.28 Ils crièrent à pleine voix et ils se firent, selon leur coutume, des incisions avec des épées et avec des lances, jusqu’à ce que le sang coule sur eux.29 Lorsque midi fut passé, il prophétisèrent jusqu’au moment de la présentation de l’offrande. Mais il n’y eut ni voix, ni réponse, ni signe d’attention.30 Élie dit alors à tout le peuple : Approchez-vous de moi ! Tout le peuple s’approcha de lui. Alors Élie rétablit l’autel de l’Éternel qui avait été renversé.31 Élie prit douze pierres, d’après le nombre des tribus des fils de Jacob, à qui la parole de l’Éternel avait été (adressée) en ces termes : “ “Israël sera ton nom”” ;32 il bâtit avec ces pierres un autel au nom de l’Éternel. Il fit autour de l’autel un fossé de la capacité de deux mesures de semence.33 Il arrangea le bois, découpa le taureau et le mit sur le bois.34 Puis il dit : Remplissez d’eau quatre cruches et versez-les sur l’holocauste et sur le bois. Il dit : Faites-le une seconde fois. Ils le firent une seconde fois. Il dit : Faites-le une troisième fois. Ils le firent une troisième fois.35 L’eau coula autour de l’autel, et l’on remplit aussi d’eau le fossé.36 Au moment de la présentation de l’offrande, le prophète Élie s’avança et dit : Éternel, Dieu d’Abraham, d’Isaac et d’Israël, que l’on reconnaisse aujourd’hui que c’est toi qui est Dieu en Israël, que je suis ton serviteur et que j’ai fait toutes ces choses par ta parole !37 Réponds-moi, Éternel, réponds-moi, afin que ce peuple reconnaisse que c’est toi, Éternel, qui es Dieu, et que c’est toi qui ramènes leur cœur !38 Alors le feu de l’Éternel tomba ; il consuma l’holocauste, le bois, les pierres et la terre, et il absorba l’eau qui était dans le fossé.39 Quand tout le peuple vit cela, ils tombèrent la face contre terre et dirent : C’est l’Éternel qui est Dieu ! C’est l’Éternel qui est Dieu !40 Élie leur dit : Saisissez les prophètes de Baal, qu’aucun d’eux n’échappe ! Ils les saisirent. Élie les fit descendre au torrent de Qichôn, où il les égorgea.La pluie revient
41 Élie dit à Achab : Monte, mange et bois, car ce grondement c’est la pluie.42 Achab monta pour manger et pour boire. Mais Élie monta au sommet du Carmel et, se courbant contre terre, il mit son visage entre ses genoux43 et dit à son jeune serviteur : Monte donc, regarde du côté de la mer. Celui-ci monta, il regarda et dit : Il n’y a rien. Élie dit sept fois : Retourne.44 A la septième fois, il dit : Voici un petit nuage qui s’élève de la mer, il est comme la paume de la main d’un homme. Élie dit : Monte dire à Achab : Attelle et redescends, afin que la pluie ne t’arrête pas.45 De toutes parts le ciel devint noir de nuages, le vent (se leva), et il y eut une forte pluie. Achab monta sur son char et partit pour Jizréel.46 La main de l’Éternel fut sur Élie, qui mit une ceinture à ses reins et courut devant Achab jusqu’à l’entrée de Jizréel.
