Ce précepte complète aussi le précèdent sous cette forme négative. "Retenir ce qui est bon," c'est s'abstenir de toute espèce de mal, du mal sous quelque forme qu'il se présente.

Nos anciennes versions traduisent : "de toute apparence de mal," mais le mot employé par l'apôtre n'a pas ce sens.
