Jéhojada renouvelle par un serment, accompagné sans doute d'un sacrifice, le contrat qui unissait l'Eternel au peuple et à son roi, et le contrat subsidiaire qui unissait le peuple au roi, représentant de la souveraineté divine.

Le roi et les enfants d'Israël avaient témoigné leur appartenance à l'Éternel et voulaient se séparer des impies. Il est bon, quand des changements s'opèrent dans un peuple, que ce dernier se tourne alors vers la piété. Les pieux engagements ont à la fois les avantages de nous remémorer nos serments, mais aussi de nous conduire dans le chemin du devoir. Ils abolissent immédiatement l'idolâtrie.

Les enfants d'Israël s'entraidèrent mutuellement, conformément aux lois de leur statut de « peuple de l'Éternel ». Ils étaient dans la joie et Jérusalem était alors en paix.

Le seul moyen pour un peuple, de vraiment connaître la joie et la paix, consiste à s'engager pleinement à servir Dieu ; car l'allégresse et la reconnaissance envers le ciel demeurent parmi les justes, alors qu'on ne rencontre aucune paix parmi les méchants !
