Elisée lui dit... : Tu ne vivras certainement pas. Presque tous les traducteurs et commentateurs entendent au contraire : Tu vivras certainement. On obtient ce sens au moyen d'une leçon qui se trouve en marge des manuscrits et qui, par le changement d'une seule lettre, fait de l'adverbe négatif non le pronom personnel lui, ainsi : Dis-lui : Tu vivras..., au lieu de : Dis : Tu ne vivras pas. Si tel était le sens, la pensée d'Elisée serait : Tu ne mourras pas (de ta maladie), mais tu n'en mourras pas moins certainement par une autre cause. Ces derniers mots seraient pour Hazaël seul ; c'est ce que montrerait le changement de tu en il. Dans notre sens la réponse d'Elisée est simplement négative : Le roi ne se relèvera pas de sa maladie. Il faut admettre qu'au verset 14, pour donner pleine sécurité au roi, Hazaël fait dire au prophète le contraire de ce qu'il a dit.
