Le mot Ecriture étant ici employé sans article, et la phrase sans verbe, il règne quelque obscurité, non sur la pensée de l'apôtre, mais sur la construction grammaticale.

On peut traduire ces paroles, et on les a traduites en effet, de trois manières différentes :

1° "Toute Ecriture (est) inspirée de Dieu et utile," et c'est là la version la plus littérale et le sens qu'adoptent les exégètes les plus compétents, à quelque opinion dogmatique qu'ils appartiennent.

2° "Toute l'Ecriture (est) inspirée..." Cette version est difficile à justifier grammaticalement, et elle ajoute (par l'article) à la pensée apostolique un sens précis qu'elle n'a pas.

3° "Toute Ecriture inspirée de Dieu (est) aussi utile..." Cette traduction est peu naturelle ; elle est rejetée par les meilleurs interprètes, et soutenue par d'autres qui insinuent par là que telle Ecriture est seule inspirée et dès lors utile, tandis que telle autre ne serait ni inspirée ni utile. Ou du moins cette manière de construire et de traduire fait porter la pensée de l'apôtre sur l'utilité de l'Ecriture plutôt que sur son inspiration. A quoi bon ? elle n'est utile que parce qu'elle est inspirée.

Nous adoptons donc la première version. Ces mots : toute Ecriture ne peuvent laisser le moindre doute dans l'esprit, car l'apôtre ne fait que reprendre ainsi, en d'autres termes, l'idée qu'il vient d'exprimer, (2Timothée 3.15) en rappelant à son disciple qu'il a dès son enfance la connaissance des saintes lettres, c'est-à-dire des saintes Ecritures, prises toutes ensemble. Et notre verset 2Timothée 3.16 n'a d'autre but que de proclamer la vérité, l'autorité et l'utilité de ces saintes Ecritures.

- Le mot theopneustos (composé de theos, Dieu, et de pneuma, Esprit, d'où théopneustie) ne se trouve qu'ici dans le Nouveau Testament. Il signifie que l'Ecriture est, dans son ensemble, pénétrée de l'Esprit de Dieu.

Le meilleur commentaire de cette parole se trouve dans 2Pierre 1.21 "Les saints hommes de Dieu, portés par l'Esprit-Saint, ont parlé." L'apôtre Paul se contente d'exprimer clairement ce grand fait qui est la base et la garantie de toutes les révélations divines. Mais il n'expose ni ne justifie aucun système humain sur le mode, la nature, l'étendue de l'inspiration, non plus que sur la part de Dieu et la part de l'homme dans la composition des Ecritures. L'exégèse ne peut aller plus loin ; tout le reste appartient à la dogmatique.
