Actes 16.23

Les préteurs, dans l'espoir de calmer le soulèvement de la foule, n'y regardent pas de si près avec des juifs méprisés ; sans jugement, ils infligent à Paul et à Silas un supplice cruel, puis les font jeter en prison.

- Ayant arraché leurs vêtements, car la flagellation était appliquée sur le dos nu, ils ordonnaient de les battre de verges.

Le mot traduit par coups signifie aussi plaies, car chacun de ces coups faisait couler le sang. (Comparer verset 33) Ce récit est confirmé par l'apôtre Paul lui-même. (1Thessaloniciens 2.2)
