World English Bible Neither shall he multiply wives to himself, that his heart not turn away: neither shall he greatly multiply to himself silver and gold.

Deuxièmement : Qu'il n'ait pas non plus un, grand nombre de femmes. Ce n'est point ici, comme on l'a cru, une interdiction absolue de la polygamie, interdiction qui ne se trouve nulle part dans l'Ancien Testament, si ce n'est implicitement dans la parole citée par Jésus (Genèse 2.23-24). C'est une limite apportée à l'usage des harems royaux contenant une multitude de femmes : tels qu'ils existaient et existent encore dans les monarchies orientales.

De peur que son cœur ne se détourne : non seulement par suite d'une vie de sensualité, mais aussi à cause de l'origine étrangère et païenne de plusieurs de ces femmes, qui amèneraient avec elles leurs rites idolâtres.

Troisèmement : Amas d'argent et d'or. Ce trait d'immenses trésors amassés et du luxe qui en résulte, achève le tableau, tiré de l'état de choses existant partout à cette époque en dehors d'Israël.
