31 à 33 Cinquième strophe.

Car ce n'est pas la supériorité des dieux des païens qui aura procuré a ces derniers la victoire. Ici le terme leur rocher désigne la fausse divinité à laquelle chaque nation idolâtre donne sa confiance.

Nos ennemis en sont juges : Je pourrais m'en remettre à leur arbitrage sur ce point. Voir, pour le mot pelilim, juges, arbitres, Exode 21.22 ; et pour la chose Nombres 23.23 et en général toutes les prophéties de Balaam, ainsi qu'Exode 14.25 ; Josué 2.9.

En faisant porter la négation exprimée dans le premier membre, aussi sur le second, on arriverait à un sens qui paraîtra peut-être plus naturel : Et nos ennemis ne sont pas les arbitres (de notre sort). Toutefois la grammaire n'est pas favorable à cette construction.
