Les peuples. Si l'on traduit, comme le font plusieurs : Certainement il chérit... on doit voir dans les peuples les tribus d'Israël (Genèse 49.10). Mais le sens plus exact est : Il chérit aussi... et, dans ce cas, le mot de peuples doit désigner comme si souvent, les peuples en général (Genèse 27.29 ; Exode 15.14 ; Deutéronome 32.8 ; Esaïe 8.9 ; Psaumes 33.10), et dans notre chapitre même, versets 17 et 19). Lors même que Dieu s'est révélé si spécialement à Israël, il aime aussi les autres peuples. Celle idée est amenée par l'opposition au mot : pour eux (Israël), deux fois répété dans ce qui précède. Nous retrouvons ici une pensée analogue à celle d'Exode 19.5-6, où, tout en déclarant Israël son peuple choisi, Dieu a soin d'ajouter : Toute la terre est à moi ! et où le même mot ammim (les peuples) est employé pour désigner les peuples en général.

Tous ses saints. Dans cette même parole de l'Exode, Israël est appelé : la nation sainte, pour le distinguer des autres peuples.

En ta main : à ta disposition, prêts à te servir. Plusieurs ont entendu par là les anges (verset 2) ; d'autres, les israélites pieux uniquement, en opposition au reste du peuple. Le sens plus général, tout Israël, nous paraît plus naturel : Tu chéris tous les peuples, mais entre tous, Israël est ton peuple. A remarquer le changement de la troisième à la deuxième personne dans une seule et même proposition : tous ses saints, en ta main. De pareils changements de personnes sont très fréquents dans l'Ancien Testament, mais surtout dans ce morceau.

Et eux : ses saints ; ce peuple saint et lui seul.

Se sont rangés à tes pieds : allusion à la scène de la promulgation de la loi, où le peuple était rangé au pied de la montagne sainte.
