AUTORITÉ

(étym., pouvoir dont on est « l'auteur », faculté d'autoriser).

L'autorité est un pouvoir moral et personnel, librement affirmé et librement accepté, par opposition à la force brutale de la contrainte. C'est l'ascendant qu'exerce une individualité sur son entourage, soit par sa valeur propre, soit sous l'inspiration de Dieu : | Moïse et Josué (No 27:20) ; surtout Jésus (Mr 1:27, Mt 7:29) ; les apôtres (2Co 10:8 13:10, Tit 2:15). L'autorité morale peut d'ailleurs être appuyée sur une force contraignante (Mt 9:6, Lu 9:1).

On appelle aussi autorité, au sens passif de « recevoir l'autorisation », la qualité ou le droit qui confère à un homme cet ascendant moral. A Jésus ses adversaires demandent de quel droit il agit, de qui il tient ce droit (Mt 21:23). Jésus tient de Dieu le droit de pardon (Mr 2:10), de son humanité parfaite son droit de jugement (Jn 5:27).

Les sociétés humaines reconnaissent l'autorité familiale du père ou de ses délégués (Mr 13:34,1Co 7:37), l'autorité politique des magistrats (Esa 22:21, Mt 20:25, Lu 23:7, Ac 9:14 26:10-12). Par extension, le mot désigne les chefs eux-mêmes (Lu 7:8, Ro 13:1-3).

Enfin la Bible attribue de l'autorité aux anges et aux démons (Lu 4:6 22:63, litt. « l'autorité ténébreuse » ; Eph 1:21 2:2 6:12 Ap 13:2-4 18:1). Toutefois l'autorité du Christ leur reste toujours supérieure (Eph 1:20 et suivant, Col 2:15), car il a été investi de l'autorité suprême (Mt 28:18) par le souverain Maître de tout ce qui est et de ce qui sera (Ac 1:7). Telle est sans doute « l'autorité souveraine », dans Jude 8 et 2Pi 2:10 : celle du Christ, en Dieu, et peut-être aussi celle des « autorités » (Col 1:16), c-à-d. de la hiérarchie spirituelle des anges.
