Surnom (Mt 26:3), d'origine incertaine, d'un grand-prêtre juif, Joseph, gendre d'Anne (Jn 18:13).

Type du Sadducéen arriviste et orgueilleux, il fut établi grand-prêtre en l'an 18 par Valerius Gratus et destitué en 36 par Vitellius. Chef religieux et civil des Juifs, il ne dut de rester à ce poste tant d'années qu'à sa servilité vis-à-vis des oppresseurs de son peuple, dont l'indignation finit par l'emporter sur la faveur romaine.

Il est fait mention de lui plusieurs fois dans le N.T. : Lu 3:2 le nomme avec Anne comme grand-prêtre à l'époque où Jean-Baptiste commence à prêcher. En séance du Sanhédrin, après la résurrection de Lazare, il emporte, en invoquant l'intérêt général, la décision hostile à Jésus, et le 4 e évangile y voit une prophétie inconsciente du représentant officiel de Dieu (Jn 11:47,54, cf. Jn 18:14) ; l'expression trois fois répétée : « étant grand-prêtre cette année-là » n'est pas une indication historique, l'évangéliste sachant fort bien que la charge de grand-prêtre durait plus d'un an : c'est une allusion à cette année mémorable, celle du grand crime du Sanhédrin !

Dans le palais de Caïphe, on décide la mort de Jésus, et on traite avec Judas après ce conseil (Mt 26:3 et suivants). Devant lui comparaît Jésus en une séance du Sanhédrin (voy. Anne, mentionné aussi à propos du procès) ; il préside et pose à l'accusé, avec la formule de serment solennel (Le 5:1), la question qui lui permettra de l'accuser de blasphème : « Dis-nous si tu es le Christ, le fils de Dieu » (Mr 14:53-65 Matthieu 26:57-68, Lu 22:54,66-71). Ac 4:6 mentionne encore Caïphe à l'occasion de la comparution de Pierre et Jean devant le Sanhédrin. C'est sans doute encore lui qui est le grand-prêtre dans Ac 5:17 et suivants Ac 7:1 9:1. E. F.

      1 Le SEIGNEUR dit à Moïse
      2 de donner aux Israélites les enseignements suivants : « Quand quelqu’un a péché sans le vouloir, quand il a commis un acte interdit par un commandement du SEIGNEUR, voici ce qu’il faut faire.
      3 Supposons ceci : C’est le grand-prêtre qui a commis un péché, et par là, il a rendu le peuple coupable. Il doit alors offrir en sacrifice au SEIGNEUR un taureau sans défaut, pour recevoir le pardon des péchés.
      4 Il conduit l’animal devant le SEIGNEUR, à l’entrée de la tente de la rencontre. Il pose la main sur la tête du taureau et il l’égorge à cet endroit.
      5 Le grand-prêtre prend du sang du taureau et il l’emporte dans la tente de la rencontre.
      6 Il trempe un doigt dans le sang et, devant le SEIGNEUR, il lance sept fois un peu de sang sur le rideau du lieu très saint, sur sa partie visible.
      7 Ensuite, le grand-prêtre met du sang sur les coins relevés de l’autel du parfum qui se trouve devant le SEIGNEUR, dans la tente de la rencontre. Puis il verse tout le sang qui reste au pied de l’autel des sacrifices qui se trouve à l’entrée de la tente.
      8 Il prend toutes les parties grasses du taureau : la graisse qui entoure les intestins et l’estomac,
      9 les deux reins avec la graisse qui les enveloppe et qui tient aux côtés de l’animal, enfin, la meilleure partie du foie. On l’enlève avec les reins.
      10 Ce sont les mêmes parties qu’on prend quand on offre un taureau en sacrifice de communion. Le grand-prêtre les brûle sur l’autel des sacrifices.
      11 Ensuite, la peau du taureau, la viande, la tête, les pattes, les intestins et l’estomac avec ce qu’ils contiennent,
      12 tout ce qui reste de l’animal, il le fait porter en dehors du camp. On porte ces restes dans un endroit pur, là où on met les cendres grasses, et on les brûle sur un feu de bois. C’est à cet endroit qu’il faut tout brûler, sur le tas des cendres grasses. »
      13 « Supposons ceci : C’est toute la communauté d’Israël qui a péché sans le vouloir et sans le savoir. Elle a fait un acte interdit par un commandement du SEIGNEUR. Dans ce cas, les Israélites sont devenus coupables.
      14 Quand ils se rendent compte de ce péché, ils doivent offrir un taureau pour recevoir le pardon de Dieu. Ils conduisent l’animal devant la tente de la rencontre.
      15 Les anciens de la communauté posent la main sur la tête du taureau, et l’un d’eux l’égorge à cet endroit, devant le SEIGNEUR.
      16 Le grand-prêtre emporte un peu de son sang dans la tente de la rencontre.
      17 Il trempe un doigt dans le sang et, devant le SEIGNEUR, il lance du sang sept fois sur le rideau du lieu très saint, sur sa partie visible.
      18 Ensuite, le grand-prêtre met du sang sur les coins relevés de l’autel qui se trouve devant le SEIGNEUR, dans la tente de la rencontre. Puis il verse tout le sang qui reste au pied de l’autel des sacrifices qui se trouve à l’entrée de la tente.
      19 Il prend toutes les parties grasses du taureau et il les brûle sur l’autel.
      20 Avec ce taureau, il fait exactement la même chose qu’avec le taureau offert pour son péché à lui. Quand le grand-prêtre fait sur la communauté d’Israël le geste du pardon des péchés, Dieu pardonne à cette communauté.
      21 Ensuite, le grand-prêtre fait porter en dehors du camp tout ce qui reste de l’animal. On le brûle comme on a brûlé le premier taureau offert pour le péché du grand-prêtre. Voilà le sacrifice pour recevoir le pardon, quand la communauté d’Israël a commis un péché. »
      22 « Supposons ceci : C’est un chef du peuple qui a péché sans le vouloir. Il a fait un acte interdit par un commandement du SEIGNEUR son Dieu, et ainsi il est devenu coupable.
      23 Quand il se rend compte de ce péché, il doit offrir un bouc sans défaut.
      24 Il pose la main sur la tête de l’animal et il l’égorge devant le SEIGNEUR, là où on tue les animaux offerts en sacrifices complets. C’est un sacrifice pour recevoir le pardon des péchés.
      25 Le prêtre trempe un doigt dans le sang du bouc et il en met sur les coins relevés de l’autel des sacrifices. Puis il verse tout le sang qui reste au pied de cet autel.
      26 Il brûle sur l’autel toutes les parties grasses, comme on le fait pour le sacrifice de communion. Quand le prêtre fait sur le chef le geste de pardon pour son péché, Dieu pardonne à ce chef. »
      27 « Supposons ceci : C’est n’importe quel Israélite qui a péché sans le vouloir. Il a fait un acte interdit par un commandement du SEIGNEUR, et ainsi il est devenu coupable.
      28 Quand il se rend compte de ce péché, il doit offrir une chèvre sans défaut pour recevoir le pardon de Dieu.
      29 Il pose la main sur la tête de l’animal et il l’égorge là où on égorge les animaux offerts en sacrifices complets.
      30 Le prêtre trempe un doigt dans le sang de la chèvre et il en met sur les coins relevés de l’autel des sacrifices. Puis il verse tout le sang qui reste au pied de cet autel.
      31 Il enlève toutes les parties grasses de la chèvre, comme on le fait pour le sacrifice de communion. Le prêtre les brûle sur l’autel pour que la fumée de bonne odeur de ce sacrifice plaise au SEIGNEUR. Il fait sur le coupable le geste de pardon pour son péché. Alors Dieu pardonne à cet homme.
      32 « Si le coupable offre un mouton en sacrifice pour recevoir le pardon, il doit amener une femelle sans défaut.
      33 Il pose la main sur la tête de l’animal et il l’égorge là où on égorge les animaux offerts en sacrifices complets.
      34 Le prêtre trempe un doigt dans le sang de l’animal et il en met sur les coins relevés de l’autel des sacrifices.
      35 Il enlève toutes les parties grasses du mouton, comme pour le sacrifice de communion. Le prêtre les brûle sur l’autel avec les autres sacrifices brûlés pour le SEIGNEUR. Il fait sur le coupable le geste de pardon pour son péché. Alors Dieu pardonne à cet homme. »

      Lévitique 5

      1 « Supposons ceci : Quelqu’un a vu quelque chose de grave ou il en a entendu parler. Il entend l’appel insistant adressé à ceux qui peuvent en témoigner. Pourtant, il ne dit pas ce qu’il sait. C’est un péché, et il est coupable.

      Matthieu 26

      3 Alors les chefs des prêtres et les anciens du peuple se réunissent dans le palais de Caïphe, le grand-prêtre.
      57 Ceux qui ont arrêté Jésus l’emmènent chez Caïphe, le grand-prêtre. Là, les maîtres de la loi et les anciens sont réunis.
      58 Pierre suit Jésus de loin, jusqu’à la cour de la maison du grand-prêtre. Il entre dans la cour et il s’assoit avec les serviteurs. Il veut voir comment cela va finir.
      59 Les chefs des prêtres et tout le Tribunal religieux cherchent une fausse raison d’accuser Jésus, pour le condamner à mort.
      60 Mais ils n’en trouvent pas. Pourtant, beaucoup de faux témoins viennent dire des mensonges contre Jésus. À la fin, deux hommes arrivent et ils disent :
      61 « Cet homme a dit : “Je peux détruire le temple de Dieu et le reconstruire en trois jours.” »
      62 Alors le grand-prêtre se lève et il dit à Jésus : « Tu ne réponds rien ? Qu’est-ce que ces gens disent contre toi ? »
      63 Mais Jésus se tait. Le grand-prêtre lui dit : « Au nom du Dieu vivant, je te demande de répondre : Est-ce que tu es le Messie, le Fils de Dieu ? »
      64 Jésus lui répond : « C’est toi qui le dis. Mais je vous l’affirme, à partir de maintenant, vous verrez le Fils de l’homme assis à droite du Tout-Puissant. Il viendra sur les nuages du ciel. »
      65 Alors le grand-prêtre déchire ses vêtements et dit : « Il a insulté Dieu ! Nous n’avons plus besoin de témoins ! Vous venez d’entendre l’insulte !
      66 Qu’est-ce que vous en pensez ? » Ils lui répondent : « Il doit mourir. »
      67 Alors ils crachent sur le visage de Jésus et ils le frappent à coups de poing. D’autres lui donnent des gifles
      68 en disant : « Messie, devine ! Dis-nous qui t’a frappé ! »

      Marc 14

      53 Ils emmènent Jésus chez le grand-prêtre. Là, tous les chefs des prêtres, les anciens et les maîtres de la loi se réunissent.
      54 Pierre suit Jésus de loin et il entre chez le grand-prêtre. Il s’assoit dans la cour avec les serviteurs et il se chauffe près du feu.
      55 Les chefs des prêtres et tout le Tribunal religieux cherchent une raison d’accuser Jésus pour le condamner à mort, mais ils n’en trouvent pas.
      56 En effet, beaucoup de témoins disent des mensonges contre Jésus, mais ils ne sont pas d’accord entre eux.
      57 Quelques-uns se lèvent et ils accusent Jésus en disant ce mensonge :
      58 « Nous l’avons entendu dire : “Je détruirai ce temple que les hommes ont construit. Et en trois jours, j’en bâtirai un autre qui ne sera pas construit par les hommes.” »
      59 Mais même ces témoins-là ne sont pas d’accord entre eux.
      60 Alors le grand-prêtre se lève devant tout le monde et il demande à Jésus : « Tu ne réponds rien ? Qu’est-ce que ces gens disent contre toi ? »
      61 Mais Jésus se tait, il ne répond rien. De nouveau, le grand-prêtre lui demande : « Est-ce que tu es le Messie, le Fils du Dieu que nous adorons ? »
      62 Jésus lui répond : « Oui, je le suis. Et vous verrez le Fils de l’homme assis à la droite du Dieu tout-puissant, et venir parmi les nuages du ciel. »
      63 Alors le grand-prêtre déchire ses vêtements et il dit : « Nous n’avons plus besoin de témoins !
      64 Vous l’avez entendu insulter Dieu. Qu’est-ce que vous en pensez ? » Tout le monde condamne Jésus et dit qu’il doit mourir.
      65 Quelques-uns se mettent à cracher sur lui. Ils couvrent son visage, ils le frappent à coups de poing et lui disent : « Qui t’a frappé ? Devine ! » Les serviteurs prennent Jésus et lui donnent des gifles.

      1 Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying,
      2 "Speak to the children of Israel, saying, 'If anyone sins unintentionally, in any of the things which Yahweh has commanded not to be done, and does any one of them:
      3 if the anointed priest sins so as to bring guilt on the people, then let him offer for his sin, which he has sinned, a young bull without blemish to Yahweh for a sin offering.
      4 He shall bring the bull to the door of the Tent of Meeting before Yahweh; and he shall lay his hand on the head of the bull, and kill the bull before Yahweh.
      5 The anointed priest shall take some of the blood of the bull, and bring it to the Tent of Meeting.
      6 The priest shall dip his finger in the blood, and sprinkle some of the blood seven times before Yahweh, before the veil of the sanctuary.
      7 The priest shall put some of the blood on the horns of the altar of sweet incense before Yahweh, which is in the Tent of Meeting; and he shall pour out all of rest of the blood of the bull at the base of the altar of burnt offering, which is at the door of the Tent of Meeting.
      8 He shall take all the fat of the bull of the sin offering off of it; the fat that covers the innards, and all the fat that is on the innards,
      9 and the two kidneys, and the fat that is on them, which is by the loins, and the cover on the liver, with the kidneys, he shall take away,
      10 as it is taken off of the bull of the sacrifice of peace offerings. The priest shall burn them on the altar of burnt offering.
      11 The bull's skin, all its flesh, with its head, and with its legs, its innards, and its dung,
      12 even the whole bull shall he carry forth outside the camp to a clean place, where the ashes are poured out, and burn it on wood with fire. Where the ashes are poured out it shall be burned.
      13 "'If the whole congregation of Israel sins, and the thing is hidden from the eyes of the assembly, and they have done any of the things which Yahweh has commanded not to be done, and are guilty;
      14 when the sin in which they have sinned is known, then the assembly shall offer a young bull for a sin offering, and bring it before the Tent of Meeting.
      15 The elders of the congregation shall lay their hands on the head of the bull before Yahweh; and the bull shall be killed before Yahweh.
      16 The anointed priest shall bring of the blood of the bull to the Tent of Meeting:
      17 and the priest shall dip his finger in the blood, and sprinkle it seven times before Yahweh, before the veil.
      18 He shall put some of the blood on the horns of the altar which is before Yahweh, that is in the Tent of Meeting; and the rest of the blood he shall pour out at the base of the altar of burnt offering, which is at the door of the Tent of Meeting.
      19 All its fat he shall take from it, and burn it on the altar.
      20 Thus shall he do with the bull; as he did with the bull of the sin offering, so shall he do with this; and the priest shall make atonement for them, and they shall be forgiven.
      21 He shall carry forth the bull outside the camp, and burn it as he burned the first bull. It is the sin offering for the assembly.
      22 "'When a ruler sins, and unwittingly does any one of all the things which Yahweh his God has commanded not to be done, and is guilty;
      23 if his sin, in which he has sinned, is made known to him, he shall bring as his offering a goat, a male without blemish.
      24 He shall lay his hand on the head of the goat, and kill it in the place where they kill the burnt offering before Yahweh. It is a sin offering.
      25 The priest shall take some of the blood of the sin offering with his finger, and put it on the horns of the altar of burnt offering. He shall pour out the rest of its blood at the base of the altar of burnt offering.
      26 All its fat he shall burn on the altar, like the fat of the sacrifice of peace offerings; and the priest shall make atonement for him concerning his sin, and he will be forgiven.
      27 "'If anyone of the common people sins unwittingly, in doing any of the things which Yahweh has commanded not to be done, and is guilty;
      28 if his sin, which he has sinned, is made known to him, then he shall bring for his offering a goat, a female without blemish, for his sin which he has sinned.
      29 He shall lay his hand on the head of the sin offering, and kill the sin offering in the place of burnt offering.
      30 The priest shall take some of its blood with his finger, and put it on the horns of the altar of burnt offering; and the rest of its blood he shall pour out at the base of the altar.

      33 He shall lay his hand on the head of the sin offering, and kill it for a sin offering in the place where they kill the burnt offering.
      34 The priest shall take some of the blood of the sin offering with his finger, and put it on the horns of the altar of burnt offering; and all the rest of its blood he shall pour out at the base of the altar.
      35 All its fat he shall take away, like the fat of the lamb is taken away from the sacrifice of peace offerings; and the priest shall burn them on the altar, on the offerings of Yahweh made by fire; and the priest shall make atonement for him concerning his sin that he has sinned, and he will be forgiven.

      1 "'If anyone sins, in that he hears the voice of adjuration, he being a witness, whether he has seen or known, if he doesn't report it, then he shall bear his iniquity.

      Matthieu 26

      3 Then the chief priests, the scribes, and the elders of the people were gathered together in the court of the high priest, who was called Caiaphas.
      57 Those who had taken Jesus led him away to Caiaphas the high priest, where the scribes and the elders were gathered together.
      58 But Peter followed him from a distance, to the court of the high priest, and entered in and sat with the officers, to see the end.
      59 Now the chief priests, the elders, and the whole council sought false testimony against Jesus, that they might put him to death;
      60 and they found none. Even though many false witnesses came forward, they found none. But at last two false witnesses came forward,
      61 and said, "This man said, 'I am able to destroy the temple of God, and to build it in three days.'"
      62 The high priest stood up, and said to him, "Have you no answer? What is this that these testify against you?"
      63 But Jesus held his peace. The high priest answered him, "I adjure you by the living God, that you tell us whether you are the Christ, the Son of God."
      64 Jesus said to him, "You have said it. Nevertheless, I tell you, after this you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of Power, and coming on the clouds of the sky."
      65 Then the high priest tore his clothing, saying, "He has spoken blasphemy! Why do we need any more witnesses? Behold, now you have heard his blasphemy.
      66 What do you think?" They answered, "He is worthy of death!"
      67 Then they spit in his face and beat him with their fists, and some slapped him,
      68 saying, "Prophesy to us, you Christ! Who hit you?"

      Marc 14

      53 They led Jesus away to the high priest. All the chief priests, the elders, and the scribes came together with him.
      54 Peter had followed him from a distance, until he came into the court of the high priest. He was sitting with the officers, and warming himself in the light of the fire.
      55 Now the chief priests and the whole council sought witnesses against Jesus to put him to death, and found none.
      56 For many gave false testimony against him, and their testimony didn't agree with each other.
      57 Some stood up, and gave false testimony against him, saying,
      58 "We heard him say, 'I will destroy this temple that is made with hands, and in three days I will build another made without hands.'"
      59 Even so, their testimony did not agree.
      60 The high priest stood up in the midst, and asked Jesus, "Have you no answer? What is it which these testify against you?"
      61 But he stayed quiet, and answered nothing. Again the high priest asked him, "Are you the Christ, the Son of the Blessed?"
      62 Jesus said, "I am. You will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of Power, and coming with the clouds of the sky."
      63 The high priest tore his clothes, and said, "What further need have we of witnesses?
      64 You have heard the blasphemy! What do you think?" They all condemned him to be worthy of death.
      65 Some began to spit on him, and to cover his face, and to beat him with fists, and to tell him, "Prophesy!" The officers struck him with the palms of their hands.

      Luc 3
