L'un des vases de terre (2Sa 17:28), c-à-d. d'argile (La 4:2), qui servaient à de constants usages domestiques et que, suivant leurs dimensions et leurs destinations, on appelle cruches, pots, vases, etc. (voir Vase, Maison, Poterie).

La cruche proprement dite était probablement la plus employée des diverses sortes de jarres comme les fouilles en Palestine en ont mis au jour des milliers, intactes ou en morceaux (H. Vincent, Canaan, ch. V).

C'était surtout le récipient portatif, à une ou deux anses (fig. 61), dans lequel de toute antiquité les femmes sont allées chercher l'eau au puits ou à la fontaine (Ge 24:11,1Sa 26:11 et suivant, 1Ro 18:34 19:6, Mr 14:13 parallèle Lu 22:10, Jn 4:28).

Ce pouvait être aussi le récipient d'huile (1Ro 17:12,14,6), etc., etc. ; on sait le rôle joué par les cruches cassées de Gédéon (Jug 7:16,19 et suivant). Dans Mr 14:13 la cruche portée sert de signe caractéristique indiqué par Jésus ; dans Jn 4:23 la cruche laissée (non pas oubliée) montre l'empressement de la Samaritaine, abandonnant le fardeau pour hâter son témoignage au Christ, et négligeant provisoirement l'eau du puits pour l'eau vive.
