Pour le sens propre de cet adjectif, voir : une double somme (Ge 43:12), une double quantité (Ex 16:5), une double faute (Jer 2:13), etc. Dans 2Co 1:15, au lieu de : une double grâce, il vaudrait mieux lire : une seconde grâce (Bbl. Cent.), la première étant le passage de Paul à Corinthe en allant en Macédoine et la deuxième son passage en en revenant. Dans 1Ti 5:17 on voit généralement une exhortation à « double-, ment honorer » les anciens, pour la direction de l'Église et pour la prédication ; plusieurs traducteurs y voient l'ordre de leur assurer « double rémunération », « doubles honoraires » (Cramp., Bbl. Cent., qui explique : « A l'origine, l'ancien préside ; dans la suite, il prêche et on l'encourage a prêcher, en doublant son traitement »).

--L'ancienne législation hébraïque réservait dans certains cas une portion double d'héritage au premier-né (De 21:17). C'est sans doute de cette expression que s'inspire la prière d'Elisée, demandant une « double portion » de l'esprit d'Élie (2Ro 2:9) ; par là il ambitionnait d'être digne de succéder au grand prophète et après lui d'être à son tour le premier ; l'interprétation de l'apocryphe Ecclésiastique, préoccupée de prodigieux, est d'un ordre beaucoup moins spirituel : « Quand Élie eut disparu dans le tourbillon, Elisée fut rempli de son esprit ; il fit deux fois plus de prodiges...  » (Sir 48:12).

--La proportion du double est souvent celle de la réparation d'un tort ou d'un dommage (Ex 22:4,9, Job 42:10, Esa 61:7), d'un cadeau de remerciements (Sir 20:10), ou bien celle d'un châtiment (Jer 16:18 17:18, Esa 40:2, Ap 18:6).

--Le double poids et la double mesure (litt., poids et poids, mesure et mesure) que l'Éternel a en abomination (Pr 20:10), correspondent exactement à notre locution courante : « avoir deux poids et deux mesures », suivant qu'on achète ou qu'on vend. --Pour le sens figuré : coeur double, langue double (Ps 12:3, Pr 17:20, Sir 6:1 etc.), voir Hypocrisie.
