EGLON

1. Roi de Moab à l'époque des Juges, s'allia aux Ammonites et aux Amalécites contre Israël, qui fut vaincu et asservi pendant dix-huit ans (Jug 3:12-14), jusqu'à l'assassinat du roi Églon par le Benjamite Éhud, qui délivra Israël de la domination de Moab (Jug 3:15-30).

2. Ville amoréenne, dont le roi, Débir, se joignit à la coalition des cinq villes contre Josué (Jos 10:3), et que celui-ci assiégea et détruisit après la prise de Lakis, ville voisine (Jos 10:34 et suivant) ; attribuée au territoire de Juda (Jos 15:39) Aujourd'hui, soit Adjlân, soit Nedjilé, près de Tell el-Hêsy (Laids).

      3 C’est pourquoi Adoni-Sédec envoya des messagers à Hoham, roi d’Hébron, à Piram, roi de Yarmouth, à Yafia, roi de Lakich, et à Debir, roi d’Églon, pour leur demander ceci :
      5 C’est ainsi que cinq rois amorites, ceux de Jérusalem, Hébron, Yarmouth, Lakich et Églon, s’allièrent pour partir en expédition avec toutes leurs troupes ; ils assiégèrent Gabaon et l’attaquèrent.
      23 Son ordre fut exécuté et on conduisit auprès de lui les rois de Jérusalem, d’Hébron, de Yarmouth, de Lakich et d’Églon.
      34 De Lakich, Josué et les Israélites se rendirent à Églon, prirent position près de la ville et l’attaquèrent.
      36 D’Églon, Josué et les Israélites montèrent jusqu’à Hébron et attaquèrent la ville.
      37 Ils s’en emparèrent, firent mourir son roi et ses habitants. Ils prirent également les villes des environs et en tuèrent les habitants. Comme à Églon, Josué détruisit entièrement la ville et extermina la population sans laisser de survivant.

      12 Les Israélites firent de nouveau ce qui déplaît au Seigneur. C’est pourquoi le Seigneur dressa contre eux Églon, roi de Moab.
      13 Églon s’allia aux Ammonites et aux Amalécites pour aller attaquer Israël ; ils s’emparèrent de la ville des Palmiers.
      14 Les Israélites furent soumis au roi Églon pendant dix-huit ans.
      15 Ils appelèrent alors le Seigneur au secours et celui-ci leur envoya un libérateur, Éhoud, un homme gaucher, qui était fils de Guéra, de la tribu de Benjamin. Les Israélites envoyèrent Éhoud présenter des cadeaux à Églon, roi de Moab.
      16 Éhoud se fabriqua une épée à deux tranchants, de cinquante centimètres environ, et la mit sous ses vêtements, contre sa cuisse droite.
      17 Puis il alla offrir les cadeaux à Églon, qui était un homme très gros.
      18 Lorsqu’il les eut donnés, il partit avec les hommes qui les avaient portés.
      19 Arrivé aux idoles de pierre qui se trouvent près du Guilgal, Éhoud retourna sur ses pas et vint dire au roi : « J’ai un message secret pour sa Majesté le roi. » Le roi ordonna à ses serviteurs de le laisser tranquille et tous sortirent.
      20 Il était alors assis dans la chambre fraîche qui lui était réservée sur la terrasse. Éhoud s’avança vers lui et déclara : « Le message que j’ai pour toi vient de Dieu. » Le roi se leva de son siège.
      21 De sa main gauche, Éhoud saisit l’épée qu’il portait sur la cuisse droite et la plongea dans le ventre du roi.
      22 Elle s’y enfonça tout entière, y compris la poignée, et la graisse se referma sur la lame, car Éhoud ne retira pas l’arme.
      23 Ensuite Éhoud sortit par derrière après avoir fermé les portes de la chambre et tourné la clé.
      24 Quand il fut parti, les serviteurs arrivèrent et constatèrent que les portes étaient fermées. Ils pensèrent que le roi était en train de satisfaire un besoin naturel à l’intérieur.
      25 Ils attendirent jusqu’à en perdre patience, mais le roi n’ouvrait toujours pas les portes de l’appartement. Alors ils prirent la clé, ouvrirent eux-mêmes et découvrirent leur maître étendu par terre, mort !
      26 Pendant qu’ils perdaient du temps, Éhoud s’était enfui. Il dépassa les idoles de pierre et se mit en sûreté à Séira.
      27 Après être arrivé à cet endroit, il sonna de la trompette dans la région montagneuse d’Éfraïm, pour rassembler les Israélites ; puis il se mit à leur tête et ils descendirent des collines.
      28 « Suivez-moi, leur dit-il, car le Seigneur vous a livré vos ennemis moabites. » Ils suivirent Éhoud, prirent aux Moabites les gués du Jourdain et ne laissèrent personne traverser la rivière.
      29 Ce jour-là, ils tuèrent environ dix mille Moabites, tous des hommes robustes et courageux. Il n’y eut aucun survivant.
      30 A partir de ce moment, les Moabites durent se soumettre aux Israélites et le pays connut le repos que procure la paix pendant quatre-vingts ans.

      3 Therefore Adoni-Zedek king of Jerusalem sent to Hoham king of Hebron, to Piram king of Jarmuth, to Japhia king of Lachish, and to Debir king of Eglon, saying,
      5 Therefore the five kings of the Amorites, the king of Jerusalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish, the king of Eglon, gathered themselves together, and went up, they and all their armies, and encamped against Gibeon, and made war against it.
      23 They did so, and brought those five kings out of the cave to him: the king of Jerusalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish, and the king of Eglon.
      34 Joshua passed from Lachish, and all Israel with him, to Eglon; and they encamped against it fought against it.
      36 Joshua went up from Eglon, and all Israel with him, to Hebron; and they fought against it.
      37 They took it, and struck it with the edge of the sword, with its king and all its cities, and all the souls who were in it. He left none remaining, according to all that he had done to Eglon; but he utterly destroyed it, and all the souls who were in it.

      12 The children of Israel again did that which was evil in the sight of Yahweh: and Yahweh strengthened Eglon the king of Moab against Israel, because they had done that which was evil in the sight of Yahweh.
      13 He gathered to him the children of Ammon and Amalek; and he went and struck Israel, and they possessed the city of palm trees.
      14 The children of Israel served Eglon the king of Moab eighteen years.
      15 But when the children of Israel cried to Yahweh, Yahweh raised them up a savior, Ehud the son of Gera, the Benjamite, a man left-handed. The children of Israel sent tribute by him to Eglon the king of Moab.
      16 Ehud made him a sword which had two edges, a cubit in length; and he wore it under his clothing on his right thigh.
      17 He offered the tribute to Eglon king of Moab: now Eglon was a very fat man.
      18 When he had made an end of offering the tribute, he sent away the people who bore the tribute.
      19 But he himself turned back from the quarries that were by Gilgal, and said, "I have a secret errand to you, king." The king said, "Keep silence!" All who stood by him went out from him.
      20 Ehud came to him; and he was sitting by himself alone in the cool upper room. Ehud said, "I have a message from God to you." He arose out of his seat.
      21 Ehud put forth his left hand, and took the sword from his right thigh, and thrust it into his body:
      22 and the handle also went in after the blade; and the fat closed on the blade, for he didn't draw the sword out of his body; and it came out behind.
      23 Then Ehud went forth into the porch, and shut the doors of the upper room on him, and locked them.
      24 Now when he was gone out, his servants came; and they saw, and behold, the doors of the upper room were locked; and they said, "Surely he is covering his feet in the upper room."
      25 They waited until they were ashamed; and behold, he didn't open the doors of the upper room: therefore they took the key, and opened them, and behold, their lord was fallen down dead on the earth.
      26 Ehud escaped while they waited, and passed beyond the quarries, and escaped to Seirah.
      27 It happened, when he had come, that he blew a trumpet in the hill country of Ephraim; and the children of Israel went down with him from the hill country, and he before them.
      28 He said to them, "Follow me; for Yahweh has delivered your enemies the Moabites into your hand." They followed him, and took the fords of the Jordan against the Moabites, and didn't allow any man to pass over.
      29 They struck of Moab at that time about ten thousand men, every lusty man, and every man of valor; and there escaped not a man.
      30 So Moab was subdued that day under the hand of Israel. The land had rest eighty years.
