V Valeur historique et religieuse.

1.

LES FAITS.

Toutes ces particularités de Matthieu, si secondaire qu'en puisse parfois sembler l'intérêt, car elles visent principalement des détails, accusent néanmoins un travail de la réflexion chrétienne sur l'histoire évangélique ; ce sont des notes de réviseur et non plus des précisions de témoin direct. Si notre évangile était de l'apôtre Matthieu, il ajouterait des souvenirs de première main aux données de seconde main fournies par Marc interprète de Pierre. C'est le cas, précisément, du 4 e évangile (voir Jean [évangile de]), mais en aucune façon de celui que la tradition a tenu pour le premier. Que par exemple l'on confronte les parallèles de récits aussi importants que ceux de la multiplication des pains, de la Passion ou des apparitions du Ressuscité : alors que Jean apporte toujours des nouveautés essentielles, les adjonctions de Matthieu n'ont guère de portée profonde. Elles consistent souvent en annotations du rédacteur qui relie les faits aux discours, ou réciproquement ; pour ces notes, il a quelques sources propres d'information, et ses inférences personnelles. Un long discours prononcé sur une colline suppose que Jésus y est monté, y a eu un auditoire, en est ensuite redescendu : l'évangéliste accompagne donc le discours de ces indications. Si une prophétie lui paraît appropriée, il s'empresse de la citer et d'en montrer la réalisation telle qu'il la conçoit. Si au matin de Pâques la lourde pierre du sépulcre fut trouvée roulée, la cause dut en être un tremblement de terre, et puisqu'un ange est apparu, c'est lui qui fut la cause du tremblement de terre (Mt 28:2). Il ne s'ensuit nullement que ce narrateur ait voulu rien inventer : ses conceptions réfléchies représentent ce que les communautés de son temps considéraient comme certain ou comme le plus probable. Il représente donc un stade évolué des traditions évangéliques : les souvenirs des faits, avec l'éloignement, perdent quelque peu de leur précision, et Matthieu a moins d'autorité que Marc comme historien. A celui-ci, l'on demandera surtout les faits ; chez Matthieu, l'on ira surtout chercher les doctrines.

Il ne faut pas, toutefois, exagérer cette opposition ou, mieux, cette spécialisation entre nos deux évangiles. Puisque d'une part les enseignements du Christ sont dans Matthieu la substance de l'écrit d'un apôtre qui, de bonne heure, les avait pieusement recueillis, puisque d'autre part l'histoire de Jésus y est aussi la substance vitale, retouchée seulement sur des points limités, des souvenirs d'un apôtre transcrits par un disciple fidèle, notre évangile tient par des racines trop profondes au terrain de l'Église apostolique pour nous donner autre chose que l'authentique production de son témoignage au ministère du Seigneur.

LES IDEES.

Lorsque l'on aborde l'essentiel de ce témoignage chez Matthieu, qui consiste-donc en la doctrine, on s'y trouve aussitôt respirer une atmosphère d'A.T. ; Jésus y est présenté, dans sa personne, dans son Royaume et dans son oeuvre de salut, comme le réalisateur des prophéties messianiques, depuis longtemps attendu, s'accréditant par là tout particulièrement auprès des judéo-chrétiens qui l'ont salué comme leur Messie, et des Juifs pieux qui l'attendent encore.

1° Évangile juif, pour les Juifs.

Son point de vue et son ton judaïques sont sensibles d'un bout à l'autre. Jésus est « le Christ » (mot grec), c'est-à-dire le Messie (mot hébreu) ; il est « fils de David, fils d'Abraham » (Mt 1:1) ; il reconnaît son peuple dans les cités d'Israël (Mt 10:23), dans « les brebis perdues de la maison d'Israël » (Mt 10:6) ; en une occasion il déclare même à une païenne pourtant croyante qu'il n'a « été envoyé qu'aux brebis perdues de la maison d'Israël » : déclaration qui n'était pas dans Marc (Mt 15:24 parallèle Mr 7:26). Le Dieu d'Israël est son Dieu (Mt 15:31), il désigne l'avenir éternel comme « le jugement des douze tribus d'Israël » (Mt 19:28). Jérusalem est toujours « la ville du grand Roi » (Mt 5:35), « la ville sainte » (Mt 4:5 27:53) ; cette dernière expression, qui appartient à l'A.T., ne se trouve dans le N.T. que chez Matthieu et chez l'autre grand auteur juif de la nouvelle alliance : l'Apocalypse. Matthieu emprunte aux Logia l'idée que Jésus accomplit la Loi, laquelle est imprescriptible (Mt 5:7 cf. Lu 16:17). Il ajoute à la règle d'or telle que la donne Luc la remarque que la loi et les prophètes lui sont équivalents (Mt 7:12 parallèle Lu 6:31). Il ménage le mosaïsme en ajoutant au récit de Marc sur la question du divorce l'exception : « si ce n'est pour inconduite » (Mt 19:9 parallèle Mr 10:11). Il admet certains commandements et usages des scribes et des pharisiens (Mt 23:3, et la fin de Mt 23:23). Il ajoute à Marc une mention du sabbat qui prouve qu'à ses yeux les réglementations de ce jour n'étaient pas périmées (Mt 24:20 parallèle Mr 13:18). Il cite 60 fois les Écritures accomplies par Jésus. Il désigne Jésus de Nazareth 7 fois sous le titre messianique de fils de David, comme le Messie annoncé et préparé en Israël par les prophètes hébreux. Alors que Luc sera « l'évangile du Grec », Matthieu est « l'évangile du Juif premièrement ». (cf. Ro 1:16)

2° Évangile universaliste.

Seulement, le Juif qui l'écrit s'est assigné cette tâche parce qu'il est devenu chrétien et, ainsi, antijudaïsant, non par une aversion religieuse ou une attitude de parti pris brusquement adoptée contre ses frères de la veille, mais par la révélation qu'il a reçue de la déchéance d'Israël. Le peuple juif, en rejetant son Messie, a perdu son droit d'aînesse ; et l'évangile de Matthieu, redressant sous l'action du Christ et de l'Esprit saint les déviations de la mentalité judaïque : particularisme, nationalisme, ritualisme, se montre largement universaliste.

Le royaume d'Israël (Ac 1:6) est « le royaume », tout court (Mt 4:23), ou encore, d'une façon générale, « le royaume de Dieu » (Mt 19:24), appelé le plus souvent par Matthieu « le royaume des cieux » : locution de forme plus juive en ce qu'elle évite de prononcer le nom divin, mais équivalant à la précédente. Pour en faire partie, le Juif doit cesser d'être juif comme tel, il doit devenir disciple d'un Christ personnel à tout croyant, sans aucune partialité de race, de pays ni de religion. Matthieu marque ainsi la transition, établie par la révélation de Jésus, entre la notion du peuple élu et celle de la famille humaine du Père céleste. C'est lui qui montre dès l'entrée le Roi des Juifs adoré par les Mages (Mt 2), personnification de la science et de la piété païennes. Si dans son discours inaugural à propos du Royaume le Messie s'appuie sur la Loi (Mt 5:17 et suivants), son autorité s'oppose à celle des anciens (Mt 5:21 et suivants), et bientôt elle se heurtera à l'autoritarisme des chefs juifs (Mt 21:23 et suivants). Le régime qu'il ouvre est nouveau et modifie à ce point les perspectives spirituelles, que « le plus grand prophète » qui l'ait précédé est dépassé par le plus petit dans le royaume messianique (Mt 11:11,13). S'il envoie la première mission des Douze aux Juifs seuls, c'est par méthode, non par principe, car il a déjà annoncé, certainement au grand scandale des pharisiens étroits, l'admission d'étrangers d'Orient et d'Occident dans la félicité du royaume et leur fraternisation avec les ancêtres du judaïsme, Abraham, Isaac et Jacob, tandis que « les fils du royaume », qui le sont par la seule naissance mais non par le coeur et la vie, en seront impitoyablement exclus (Mt 8:11 et suivant). Matthieu conserve la parabole_ des vignerons, capitale à cet égard, et déjà donnée par Marc mais il en accentue la conclusion condamnant les dirigeants du judaïsme (Mt 21:43,46 parallèle Mr 12:12) ; il y ajoute les paraboles non moins sévères des deux fils et du festin des noces (Mt 21:28-32 22:1-14) et les terribles malédictions de Jésus contre l'hypocrisie des chefs religieux officiels (Mt 23). Finalement, le livre qui semble s'ouvrir dans l'horizon limité de la pensée juive : « généalogie de Jésus-Christ, fils de David, fils d'Abraham » (Mt 1:1), se ferme sur le programme d'évangélisation sans bornes, dans l'espace et dans le temps : « ... toutes les nations... ; tous les jours, jusqu'à la fin du monde », confié à ses envoyés par le Christ ressuscité, qui désormais détient la « toute-puissance dans le ciel et sur la terre » (Mt 28:18,20). L'évangéliste est donc un croyant israélite qui a compris la providentielle orientation de l'ancienne alliance, le rôle universel destiné par Dieu au peuple élu comme serviteur de l'Éternel au milieu des nations (Esa 49:6 etc.), la déchéance d'Israël, rebelle et impuissant à remplir ce rôle de témoin consacré, et la valeur enfin révélatrice et rénovatrice de la nouvelle alliance pour le salut de l'humanité.

3° Évangile du Messie.

Matthieu a trouvé le titre de Fils de l'homme 14 fois dans Marc : il l'a conservé partout et introduit 19 autres fois, sans doute à la suite du recueil des Logia. Ce titre emprunté à Ézéchiel (Eze 2 ss) et à Daniel (Da 7:13), et qui solidarise le Christ avec les hommes tout en le mettant à part comme un exemplaire unique d'humanité, est complété par celui de Fils de Dieu, que Matthieu cite aussi plus souvent encore que Marc. Les Logia sans doute, sinon quelque autre source commune, ont fourni à Matthieu comme à Luc la solennelle déclaration de Jésus, identique chez l'un et l'autre, à propos de la révélation de l'Évangile aux petits et de la connaissance réciproque du Père et du Fils (Mt 11:23,27, Lu 10:21 et suivant) ; déclaration remarquable en sa deuxième partie par son timbre « johannique », où apparaît pour la première fois dans Matthieu la désignation de Dieu par ce titre : le Père, (cf. Mt 24:36) exprimant ici une parenté unique entre Jésus et Dieu : Dieu est le seul à connaître le Fils, son origine, sa nature, son oeuvre, sa destinée humaine et divine, et Jésus est le seul à connaître Dieu, l'Être souverain te ! qu'il se manifeste par l'Évangile que Jésus lui-même est en train de fonder parmi les hommes, ce qui permet au Fils de leur révéler sa vraie nature d'envoyé du ciel comme la vraie nature du Dieu qui l'envoie. Matthieu a été le seul à faire valoir le sens du nom de Jésus (=Sauveur) en rapport avec sa vocation (Mt 1:21) et à présenter ce Fils de Dieu surnaturel sous le nom messianique d'Emmanuel =Dieu est avec nous (Mt 1:23, citation de Esa 7:14). Les prophéties dont il souligne l'accomplissement (comme nous l'avons vu) tout le long de son évangile, sont en effet pour la plupart celles que la piété juive considérait comme messianiques. La mission même de Jésus le Messie est formulée par la magnifique devise déjà donnée par Marc : « Le Fils de l'homme est venu, non pour être servi, mais pour servir et donner sa vie pour la rançon de plusieurs » (Mt 20:28 parallèle Mr 10:45) ; elle est pareillement décrite dans les trois synoptiques, à partir de l'épisode du chemin de Césarée, comme la marche volontaire vers le sacrifice de la Passion et de la mort violente : (Mt 16 : et suivant et parallèle) dans la deuxième partie de l'institution de la Cène, Matthieu ajoute à Marc les derniers mots : « ceci est mon sang, le sang de l'alliance, qui est répandu pour plusieurs, pour la rémission des péchés » (Mt 26:28 parallèle Mr 14:24), précision qui fait allusion au séculaire système juif des sacrifices expiatoires pour le péché (Le 6:6 etc.) et qui insiste sur le caractère rédempteur de la mort du Messie. Voir Jésus-Christ (Noms et titres de).

4° Evangile du Royaume.

Cette expression, qui s'applique fort bien à l'ouvrage de Matthieu, lui est empruntée à lui-même (Mt 4:23 etc.). C'est en effet la « bonne nouvelle du Royaume » qui fait le thème central de notre évangile doctrinal : la venue du Royaume des cieux (Mt 4:17), l'instauration du régime du service intégral de Dieu dans l'humanité (voir Royaume de Dieu). Il est déjà en train de s'y établir (Mt 24:14), mais il ne se réalisera pleinement qu'au retour glorieux du Fils de l'homme en qualité de Roi (Mt 25:31,34) - Ce retour n'est appelé parousie (voir ce mot) que par Matthieu seul (Mt 24 3,27,37,39) dans les évangiles, mais c'est le terme même de tous les auteurs d'épîtres dans le N.T. La venue royale du Fils de l'homme semble promise à la génération même de Jésus : (Mt 16:28) s'agit-il d'une prédiction imagée de la transfiguration, de la résurrection ou de la Pentecôte ? ce serait assez vraisemblable dans la version des deux parallèles (Mr 9:1, Lu 9:27), mais l'expression plus précise de Matthieu semble désigner l'avènement du Seigneur, que sa rédaction du discours eschatologique place aussi, par anticipation, « aussitôt » après la ruine juive (Mt 24:29 et suivants). Pourtant, Dieu seul connaît le jour et l'heure de cet avènement (Mt 24:36). Alors, les apôtres jugeront, sous l'autorité du Roi (Mt 19:28). Car un triage sera nécessaire : un ennemi agit ici-bas contre les enfants du Royaume (Mt 13:28,39), les hommes s'opposent à la Parole (Mt 13:18 et suivants) ; le Royaume viendra donc lentement, mais sûrement (Mt 13:31,33), et il est la seule valeur qui compte dans le monde (Mt 13:44-46) ; d'ici le jugement (Mt 13:47,50), les disciples prêcheront partout l'Évangile du Royaume (Mt 10:7 24:14). Leur société visible sera l' « assemblée » du Christ : « mon assemblée », dit Jésus ; en grec ekklêsia-- Église (Mt 16:18 18:17). Ces deux textes renferment les seules mentions de l'Église dans les évangiles ; il est caractéristique qu'elles appartiennent à celui des synoptiques qui met en lumière la ruine de la théocratie juive, infidèle à l'ancienne « assemblée de Jéhovah » (No 16:3 27:17). Les deux paroles du Seigneur à propos de l'Église suggèrent la nécessité de principes directeurs pour organiser la vie collective des croyants et assurer son avenir. Les fils du Royaume (Mt 8:12) dans le sens héréditaire, le peuple juif, l'ayant rejeté (Mt 21 32,42 22:7), les vrais fils du Royaume, dans le sens spirituel (Mt 13:38), seront les témoins de Jésus-Christ, un nouvel Israël, une nation féconde (Mt 21:43), composée de gens de toute origine (Mt 8:11).

Leurs qualifications morales et religieuses sont exposées dans la charte du Royaume, le discours sur la montagne, qui donne à Matthieu son coloris particulier et son originalité profonde (ch. 5-7) : les béatitudes, ou l'état d'âme des sujets du Royaume (Mt 5:3-16) ; leurs caractères, soit en contraste avec la tradition juive (Mt 5:17,48) et les pratiques juives (Mt 6:1,18), soit en eux-mêmes, dans la recherche du Royaume et de la justice de Dieu (Mt 6:19-7:11) ; la « règle d'or », ou le principe de conduite de la justice et de l'amour : « tout ce que vous voulez que les hommes vous fassent, faites-le-leur aussi vous-mêmes » (Mt 7:12) ; l'appel au choix décisif entre deux chemins, deux portes, deux arbres, deux maisons (Mt 7:13-27). C'est alors qu'on appartient au Seigneur, qu'on est des siens : il a son Église (Mt 16:18), son Royaume (Mt 16:28), ses élus (Mt 24:31), ses anges (Mt 13:41), et il jugera les hommes sur leur attitude envers les moindres de leurs frères, qui sont ses frères et le représentent en personne (Mt 25:40). Il est le Roi : si dans la parabole de Mt 22:2 le roi (parallèle du père dans Lu 14:21) représente Dieu, et le fils est l'époux, comme dans la parabole de Mt 25:1 et suivants, dans Mt 25:31,34 en tout cas le Christ prend définitivement position de Roi, au nom de Dieu son Père. Il est bien le Messie-Roi, annoncé aux Juifs, venu pour tous les hommes (Mt 21:5 27:11,29,37,42), et finalement, vainqueur de la mort, lançant la proclamation royale que tout l'évangile de Matthieu, par ses actes et par ses paroles, avait admirablement préparée (Mt 28:18-20).

      5 Then the devil took him into the holy city. He set him on the pinnacle of the temple,

      23 Jesus went about in all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the Good News of the Kingdom, and healing every disease and every sickness among the people.

      Matthieu 5

      3 "Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven.
      4 Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.
      5 Blessed are the gentle, for they shall inherit the earth.
      6 Blessed are those who hunger and thirst after righteousness, for they shall be filled.
      7 Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy.

      10 Blessed are those who have been persecuted for righteousness' sake, for theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven.
      11 "Blessed are you when people reproach you, persecute you, and say all kinds of evil against you falsely, for my sake.
      12 Rejoice, and be exceedingly glad, for great is your reward in heaven. For that is how they persecuted the prophets who were before you.
      13 "You are the salt of the earth, but if the salt has lost its flavor, with what will it be salted? It is then good for nothing, but to be cast out and trodden under the feet of men.
      14 You are the light of the world. A city located on a hill can't be hidden.
      15 Neither do you light a lamp, and put it under a measuring basket, but on a stand; and it shines to all who are in the house.
      16 Even so, let your light shine before men; that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.
      17 "Don't think that I came to destroy the law or the prophets. I didn't come to destroy, but to fulfill.
      21 "You have heard that it was said to the ancient ones, 'You shall not murder;' and 'Whoever shall murder shall be in danger of the judgment.'
      35 nor by the earth, for it is the footstool of his feet; nor by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King.

      25 Therefore I tell you, don't be anxious for your life: what you will eat, or what you will drink; nor yet for your body, what you will wear. Isn't life more than food, and the body more than clothing?
      26 See the birds of the sky, that they don't sow, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns. Your heavenly Father feeds them. Aren't you of much more value than they?
      27 "Which of you, by being anxious, can add one moment to his lifespan?
      28 Why are you anxious about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow. They don't toil, neither do they spin,
      29 yet I tell you that even Solomon in all his glory was not dressed like one of these.
      30 But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today exists, and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, won't he much more clothe you, you of little faith?
      31 "Therefore don't be anxious, saying, 'What will we eat?', 'What will we drink?' or, 'With what will we be clothed?'
      32 For the Gentiles seek after all these things; for your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things.
      33 But seek first God's Kingdom, and his righteousness; and all these things will be given to you as well.
      34 Therefore don't be anxious for tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Each day's own evil is sufficient.

      Matthieu 7

      1 "Don't judge, so that you won't be judged.
      2 For with whatever judgment you judge, you will be judged; and with whatever measure you measure, it will be measured to you.
      3 Why do you see the speck that is in your brother's eye, but don't consider the beam that is in your own eye?
      4 Or how will you tell your brother, 'Let me remove the speck from your eye;' and behold, the beam is in your own eye?
      5 You hypocrite! First remove the beam out of your own eye, and then you can see clearly to remove the speck out of your brother's eye.
      6 "Don't give that which is holy to the dogs, neither throw your pearls before the pigs, lest perhaps they trample them under their feet, and turn and tear you to pieces.
      7 "Ask, and it will be given you. Seek, and you will find. Knock, and it will be opened for you.
      8 For everyone who asks receives. He who seeks finds. To him who knocks it will be opened.
      9 Or who is there among you, who, if his son asks him for bread, will give him a stone?
      10 Or if he asks for a fish, who will give him a serpent?
      11 If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him!
      12 Therefore whatever you desire for men to do to you, you shall also do to them; for this is the law and the prophets.
      13 "Enter in by the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and many are those who enter in by it.
      14 How narrow is the gate, and restricted is the way that leads to life! Few are those who find it.
      15 "Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly are ravening wolves.
      16 By their fruits you will know them. Do you gather grapes from thorns, or figs from thistles?
      17 Even so, every good tree produces good fruit; but the corrupt tree produces evil fruit.
      18 A good tree can't produce evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree produce good fruit.
      19 Every tree that doesn't grow good fruit is cut down, and thrown into the fire.
      20 Therefore by their fruits you will know them.
      21 Not everyone who says to me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter into the Kingdom of Heaven; but he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.
      22 Many will tell me in that day, 'Lord, Lord, didn't we prophesy in your name, in your name cast out demons, and in your name do many mighty works?'
      23 Then I will tell them, 'I never knew you. Depart from me, you who work iniquity.'
      24 "Everyone therefore who hears these words of mine, and does them, I will liken him to a wise man, who built his house on a rock.
      25 The rain came down, the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat on that house; and it didn't fall, for it was founded on the rock.
      26 Everyone who hears these words of mine, and doesn't do them will be like a foolish man, who built his house on the sand.
      27 The rain came down, the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat on that house; and it fell--and great was its fall."

      Matthieu 8

      11 I tell you that many will come from the east and the west, and will sit down with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob in the Kingdom of Heaven,
      12 but the children of the Kingdom will be thrown out into the outer darkness. There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth."

      Matthieu 10

      6 Rather, go to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.
      7 As you go, preach, saying, 'The Kingdom of Heaven is at hand!'
      23 But when they persecute you in this city, flee into the next, for most certainly I tell you, you will not have gone through the cities of Israel, until the Son of Man has come.

      24 But he answered, "I wasn't sent to anyone but the lost sheep of the house of Israel."

      1 The Pharisees and Sadducees came, and testing him, asked him to show them a sign from heaven.
      2 But he answered them, "When it is evening, you say, 'It will be fair weather, for the sky is red.'
      3 In the morning, 'It will be foul weather today, for the sky is red and threatening.' Hypocrites! You know how to discern the appearance of the sky, but you can't discern the signs of the times!

      6 Jesus said to them, "Take heed and beware of the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees."

      9 Don't you yet perceive, neither remember the five loaves for the five thousand, and how many baskets you took up?

      11 How is it that you don't perceive that I didn't speak to you concerning bread? But beware of the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees."
      12 Then they understood that he didn't tell them to beware of the yeast of bread, but of the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees.
      13 Now when Jesus came into the parts of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, saying, "Who do men say that I, the Son of Man, am?"
      14 They said, "Some say John the Baptizer, some, Elijah, and others, Jeremiah, or one of the prophets."
      15 He said to them, "But who do you say that I am?"
      16 Simon Peter answered, "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God."
      17 Jesus answered him, "Blessed are you, Simon Bar Jonah, for flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven.
      18 I also tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my assembly, and the gates of Hades will not prevail against it.
      19 I will give to you the keys of the Kingdom of Heaven, and whatever you bind on earth will have been bound in heaven; and whatever you release on earth will have been released in heaven."
      20 Then he commanded the disciples that they should tell no one that he was Jesus the Christ.
      21 From that time, Jesus began to show his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things from the elders, chief priests, and scribes, and be killed, and the third day be raised up.
      22 Peter took him aside, and began to rebuke him, saying, "Far be it from you, Lord! This will never be done to you."
      23 But he turned, and said to Peter, "Get behind me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to me, for you are not setting your mind on the things of God, but on the things of men."
      24 Then Jesus said to his disciples, "If anyone desires to come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.
      25 For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, and whoever will lose his life for my sake will find it.
      26 For what will it profit a man, if he gains the whole world, and forfeits his life? Or what will a man give in exchange for his life?
      27 For the Son of Man will come in the glory of his Father with his angels, and then he will render to everyone according to his deeds.
      28 Most certainly I tell you, there are some standing here who will in no way taste of death, until they see the Son of Man coming in his Kingdom."

      Matthieu 18

      17 If he refuses to listen to them, tell it to the assembly. If he refuses to hear the assembly also, let him be to you as a Gentile or a tax collector.

      Matthieu 19

      9 I tell you that whoever divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, and marries another, commits adultery; and he who marries her when she is divorced commits adultery."
      24 Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through a needle's eye, than for a rich man to enter into the Kingdom of God."
      28 Jesus said to them, "Most certainly I tell you that you who have followed me, in the regeneration when the Son of Man will sit on the throne of his glory, you also will sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.

      Matthieu 20

      28 even as the Son of Man came not to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many."

      Matthieu 21

      5 "Tell the daughter of Zion, behold, your King comes to you, humble, and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey."
      23 When he had come into the temple, the chief priests and the elders of the people came to him as he was teaching, and said, "By what authority do you do these things? Who gave you this authority?"
      28 But what do you think? A man had two sons, and he came to the first, and said, 'Son, go work today in my vineyard.'
      29 He answered, 'I will not,' but afterward he changed his mind, and went.
      30 He came to the second, and said the same thing. He answered, 'I go, sir,' but he didn't go.
      31 Which of the two did the will of his father?" They said to him, "The first." Jesus said to them, "Most certainly I tell you that the tax collectors and the prostitutes are entering into the Kingdom of God before you.
      32 For John came to you in the way of righteousness, and you didn't believe him, but the tax collectors and the prostitutes believed him. When you saw it, you didn't even repent afterward, that you might believe him.
      42 Jesus said to them, "Did you never read in the Scriptures, 'The stone which the builders rejected, the same was made the head of the corner. This was from the Lord. It is marvelous in our eyes?'
      43 "Therefore I tell you, the Kingdom of God will be taken away from you, and will be given to a nation bringing forth its fruit.
      46 When they sought to seize him, they feared the multitudes, because they considered him to be a prophet.

      Matthieu 22

      1 Jesus answered and spoke again in parables to them, saying,
      2 "The Kingdom of Heaven is like a certain king, who made a marriage feast for his son,
      7 When the king heard that, he was angry, and sent his armies, destroyed those murderers, and burned their city.

      Matthieu 23

      1 Then Jesus spoke to the multitudes and to his disciples,
      2 saying, "The scribes and the Pharisees sat on Moses' seat.
      3 All things therefore whatever they tell you to observe, observe and do, but don't do their works; for they say, and don't do.
      4 For they bind heavy burdens that are grievous to be borne, and lay them on men's shoulders; but they themselves will not lift a finger to help them.
      5 But all their works they do to be seen by men. They make their phylacteries broad, enlarge the fringes of their garments,
      6 and love the place of honor at feasts, the best seats in the synagogues,
      7 the salutations in the marketplaces, and to be called 'Rabbi, Rabbi' by men.
      8 But don't you be called 'Rabbi,' for one is your teacher, the Christ, and all of you are brothers.
      9 Call no man on the earth your father, for one is your Father, he who is in heaven.
      10 Neither be called masters, for one is your master, the Christ.
      11 But he who is greatest among you will be your servant.
      12 Whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted.
      13 "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you devour widows' houses, and as a pretense you make long prayers. Therefore you will receive greater condemnation.
      14 "But woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! Because you shut up the Kingdom of Heaven against men; for you don't enter in yourselves, neither do you allow those who are entering in to enter.
      15 Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you travel around by sea and land to make one proselyte; and when he becomes one, you make him twice as much of a son of Gehenna as yourselves.
      16 "Woe to you, you blind guides, who say, 'Whoever swears by the temple, it is nothing; but whoever swears by the gold of the temple, he is obligated.'
      17 You blind fools! For which is greater, the gold, or the temple that sanctifies the gold?
      18 'Whoever swears by the altar, it is nothing; but whoever swears by the gift that is on it, he is obligated?'
      19 You blind fools! For which is greater, the gift, or the altar that sanctifies the gift?
      20 He therefore who swears by the altar, swears by it, and by everything on it.
      21 He who swears by the temple, swears by it, and by him who was living in it.
      22 He who swears by heaven, swears by the throne of God, and by him who sits on it.
      23 "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you tithe mint, dill, and cumin, and have left undone the weightier matters of the law: justice, mercy, and faith. But you ought to have done these, and not to have left the other undone.
      24 You blind guides, who strain out a gnat, and swallow a camel!
      25 "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you clean the outside of the cup and of the platter, but within they are full of extortion and unrighteousness.
      26 You blind Pharisee, first clean the inside of the cup and of the platter, that its outside may become clean also.
      27 "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like whitened tombs, which outwardly appear beautiful, but inwardly are full of dead men's bones, and of all uncleanness.
      28 Even so you also outwardly appear righteous to men, but inwardly you are full of hypocrisy and iniquity.
      29 "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you build the tombs of the prophets, and decorate the tombs of the righteous,
      30 and say, 'If we had lived in the days of our fathers, we wouldn't have been partakers with them in the blood of the prophets.'
      31 Therefore you testify to yourselves that you are children of those who killed the prophets.
      32 Fill up, then, the measure of your fathers.
      33 You serpents, you offspring of vipers, how will you escape the judgment of Gehenna ?
      34 Therefore behold, I send to you prophets, wise men, and scribes. Some of them you will kill and crucify; and some of them you will scourge in your synagogues, and persecute from city to city;
      35 that on you may come all the righteous blood shed on the earth, from the blood of righteous Abel to the blood of Zachariah son of Barachiah, whom you killed between the sanctuary and the altar.
      36 Most certainly I tell you, all these things will come upon this generation.
      37 "Jerusalem, Jerusalem, who kills the prophets, and stones those who are sent to her! How often I would have gathered your children together, even as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you would not!
      38 Behold, your house is left to you desolate.
      39 For I tell you, you will not see me from now on, until you say, 'Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!'"

      Matthieu 24

      3 As he sat on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to him privately, saying, "Tell us, when will these things be? What is the sign of your coming, and of the end of the age?"
      14 This Good News of the Kingdom will be preached in the whole world for a testimony to all the nations, and then the end will come.
      20 Pray that your flight will not be in the winter, nor on a Sabbath,
      27 For as the lightning flashes from the east, and is seen even to the west, so will be the coming of the Son of Man.
      29 But immediately after the oppression of those days, the sun will be darkened, the moon will not give its light, the stars will fall from the sky, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken;
      31 He will send out his angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they will gather together his chosen ones from the four winds, from one end of the sky to the other.
      36 But no one knows of that day and hour, not even the angels of heaven, but my Father only.
      37 "As the days of Noah were, so will be the coming of the Son of Man.
      39 and they didn't know until the flood came, and took them all away, so will be the coming of the Son of Man.

      Matthieu 25

      1 "Then the Kingdom of Heaven will be like ten virgins, who took their lamps, and went out to meet the bridegroom.
      31 "But when the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the holy angels with him, then he will sit on the throne of his glory.
      34 Then the King will tell those on his right hand, 'Come, blessed of my Father, inherit the Kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world;
      40 "The King will answer them, 'Most certainly I tell you, inasmuch as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers , you did it to me.'

      Matthieu 26

      28 for this is my blood of the new covenant, which is poured out for many for the remission of sins.

      11 Now Jesus stood before the governor: and the governor asked him, saying, "Are you the King of the Jews?" Jesus said to him, "So you say."
      29 They braided a crown of thorns and put it on his head, and a reed in his right hand; and they kneeled down before him, and mocked him, saying, "Hail, King of the Jews!"
      37 They set up over his head the accusation against him written, "THIS IS JESUS, THE KING OF THE JEWS."
      42 "He saved others, but he can't save himself. If he is the King of Israel, let him come down from the cross now, and we will believe in him.
