Les Hébreux avaient comme mercenaires soit des étrangers soit des compatriotes.

On trouve les conditions du mercenaire dans Le 19:13 25:40,50,53, De 15:18 24:14 et suivant Voir encore Ex 12:45, Le 22:10 25:6, Job 14:6.

Les rois engageaient des mercenaires pour leurs constructions (1Ro 5:6,2Ch 24:12) et pour leur armées (2Ro 8:20 et suivant, cf. 7:6, Jer 46:21).

L'hébreu sâkir (gr. misthios) désigne aussi journaliers et domestiques (Tob 5:11, Sir 7:20 37:11. etc.).

Le N.T. mentionne des mercenaires dans Mr 1:21, Lu 15:17, Mt 20:1,8, Jn 10:12 et suivant, etc. Voir Gages.
