L'hébreu distingue par deux mots différents la paille, tèbèn (arabe moderne, tibn), et le chaume, qach, partie des tiges non fauchées par le moissonneur ; voir à l'article Chaume les précisions à ce sujet, notamment à propos de Ex 5:12. La paille proprement dite entre dans l'alimentation des chameaux, des ânes, des chevaux) (Ge 24:32, Jug 19:19,1Ro 4:28, Esa 11:7, Vers. Syn. fourrage [v. ce mot).

Elle est opposée au froment pour sa stérilité (Jer 23:28), au fer pour sa fragilité (Job 41:18).

Elle est l'emblème des méchants enlevés ou foulés par le jugement de Dieu (Job 21:18, Esa 25:11).
