PHÉRÉZIENS

Une des peuplades qu'Abraham, à son arrivée en Canaan, trouva établies dans le pays (Ge 13:7 15:20), et dont certains éléments devaient se maintenir, malgré le programme d'extermination de De 20:17, pendant bien des générations, jusqu'au temps de la royauté, lorsque Salomon y puisa sa main-d'oeuvre d'esclaves (1Ro 9:20,2Ch 8:7). Les Phéréziens sont souvent cités dans les énumérations des peuples de Canaan plus anciens qu'Israël : Héthiens, Amoréens, etc (Ex 3:8,17 23:23 33:2 34:11, De 7:1, Jos 3:10 9:1 11:3 24:11, Jug 3:5 Esd 9:1, Judith 5:16). Ce peuple n'a pas été identifié. On remarque : qu'il est nommé plusieurs fois avec les Cananéens (Ge 13:7 34:30, Jug 1:4 et suivant), une fois avec les Rephaïm (Jos 17:15) ; que son nom hébr., Perizzi, est fort probablement parent de Perâzi, nom des habitants des villages ou villes ouvertes (par opposition aux cités fortifiées : De 3:5,1Sa 6:18, cf. Est 9:19), et de Perâzoth, nom de ces villes ouvertes elles-mêmes (Eze 38:11, Za 2:4). Bien des auteurs en ont conclu que les Phéréziens devaient se distinguer des Cananéens non. par la race mais simplement par le genre de vie, ceux-ci occupant les villes fortes et ceux-là les bourgades de la campagne.
