PLACE

1. Lieu servant aux manifestations de la vie publique. Dans les villes de l'ancien Orient, les places n'étaient pas à l'intérieur de la ville, mais devant les portes. La Bible en parle souvent. L'expression « dans les portes » est synonyme de : sur les places, où le peuple se rassemble (Pr 31:23). Crier « près des portes » équivaut à « crier sur les places publiques » (Pr 8:3,8:16). C'était là qu'on traitait les affaires, qu'on accueillait les étrangers et que les grands de ce monde aimaient à recevoir les hommages (Ge 19:2, Ca 3:2, Pr 1:20, Mt 20:3, Lu 14:21, Mt 23:7, Lu 20:45). Au temps de Jésus on pouvait trouver, à Jérusalem ou ailleurs, des places à l'intérieur de la ville, où Jésus enseignait (Lu 13:26, cf. Mr 6:56). Voir encore Ps 144:14, De 13:16,2Sa 21:12, Esa 15:3, Za 8:5, Mt 11:16, etc.

2. Place d'honneur à la droite du maître (voir Main) : le Messie siège à la droite de Dieu (Ps 110:1 Matthieu 22:44, Ac 2:34, Heb 1:13, Mr 14:62). Jésus s'assied à la droite de Dieu lors de son ascension (Mr 16:19 ; voir aussi Ac 7:55, Ro 8:34, Col 3:1, Mt 25:31). Salomon fait asseoir Bath-Séba à sa droite (1Ro 2:19, cf. Ps 45:10). Salomé réclame pour ses fils d'être assis à la droite et à la gauche de Jésus quand il viendra dans son règne (Mt 20:21). Les scribes et les pharisiens recherchaient les places d'honneur dans les festins et dans les cultes (Mt 23:6, cf. Lu 14:7). Voir Sein (5, a).

3. Dans l'hôtellerie il n'y avait pas de place pour Marie et Joseph (Lu 2:7). Pour les invités de la grâce divine, il y a toujours de la place (Lu 14:22) ; et dans la maison du Père, Jésus est allé préparer la place aux croyants (Jn 14:2).
