La tradition courante d'après laquelle le fruit défendu dans le jardin d'Éden (Ge 2:9-16 3:2,12,22) était la pomme ne repose sur aucune donnée sérieuse ; ce récit symbolique ne fournit aucune indication utile sur l'identité des deux arbres qu'il met en scène (voir Chute). La tradition de certaines peuplades de l'Inde d'après laquelle le fruit défendu était la banane (d'où le nom spécifique du « bananier du paradis » ou « figuier d'Adam », musa paradisiaca) illustre bien la tendance des peuples aux identifications de leurs propres climats.

Les motifs artistiques du chandelier à sept branches désignés par l'hébreu caphtor, que Sg. traduit par « pommes » et Ost. par « pommeaux » (Ex 25:31-36 37:19,22), étaient des ornements en relief tels qu'on en voit de représentés sur le chandelier de l'arc de Titus, en forme de bosses ou renflements accompagnant des corolles de fleurs ; mieux vaut donc traduire par : boutons (Vers. Syn., Bbl. Cent.). Le même mot désigne dans Am 9:1 un chapiteau de colonne.

      Genèse 2

      9 Out of the ground Yahweh God made every tree to grow that is pleasant to the sight, and good for food; the tree of life also in the middle of the garden, and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.

      Amos 9
