PROPHÈTE 8.

VIII Comment Jésus a accompli les prophètes.

Le caractère original, l'inspiration essentielle de l'enseignement des prophètes, par rapport aux doctrines des philosophes et des initiateurs religieux du monde païen, c'est que leur morale est avant tout sociale. L'idéal de vie humaine qu'ils prêchent n'est pas en fonction de l'individu seulement, mais en fonction d'un milieu. La loi de Moïse s'adresse non à l'Israélite, mais à Israël : « Ecoute, Israël.  » Si l'Hébreu doit se courber sous le commandement de Jéhovah, s'il doit être pieux et moral, c'est afin que son Dieu satisfait de lui puisse bénir la nation dont il est un des membres et la conduire vers sa glorieuse destinée. Le but poursuivi par l'action divine et par le ministère des hommes de Dieu est de constituer au sein de la masse humaine, ignorante et pervertie, un milieu social où la vérité soit connue, où le vrai Dieu soit adoré, où sa loi soit obéie, et qui puisse, par ses moeurs et par sa foi, devenir l'embryon du Royaume de Dieu parmi les hommes.

Quand la royauté israélite et le sacerdoce eurent trahi la volonté de Jéhovah et ramené le peuple aux errements moraux et cultuels des autres nations, les prophètes proclamèrent la déchéance des royaumes d'Israël et de Juda, ils annoncèrent qu'un reste seulement serait sauvé, et que l'envoyé de Dieu, un Emmanuel (Esa 7-12), un Messie dont la venue coïnciderait avec un évangile de grâce (Esa 61) et une nouvelle effusion de l'Esprit (Joe 2) fonderait par une alliance nouvelle (Jer 31) un nouvel Israël, purifié, sanctifié, au sein duquel l'humanité, en quête de son origine divine, verrait enfin des créatures en qui serait rétablie l'image du créateur. C'est ce nouveau milieu idéal, régénéré, que les prophètes à partir du VIII e siècle dépeignent sous les images les plus diverses, depuis Osée qui esquisse l'ère messianique (Os 14:4,8), Abdias qui parle de la montagne sainte où « la royauté appartiendra à Jéhovah » (Ab 1:15), jusqu'au livre de Daniel où on lit : « Les saints du Très-Haut recevront le royaume, ils posséderont le royaume à jamais, d'éternité en éternité » (Da 7).

Les fervents jéhovistes crurent que le retour de l'Exil marquait l'inauguration de ce royaume. La sélection qui venait de s'opérer à ce moment-là parmi les exilés, l'ardeur réformatrice des fondateurs du judaïsme purent d'abord le faire croire, mais l'illusion, pour les clairvoyants, fut de courte durée. Il est aisé de voir par la prédication de Jean-Baptiste que la nation juive, quand Jésus parut, était, à sa manière, revenue à l'endurcissement que manifestait Israël au temps des anciens prophètes. Le Royaume de Dieu était encore à fonder.

Pour la troisième fois, après Moïse, après les prophètes, Jésus reprend la tâche. Il confirme le ministère de Jean-Baptiste ; comme lui, il prêche la repentance et le baptême. Il prêche la venue du Royaume et s'affirme comme le Messie. En guérissant les malades, il se manifeste le chef divin d'un nouveau milieu social où Dieu règne. En chassant les démons, il démontre que le Royaume de Dieu « s'est approché » (Lu 10:9), que le pouvoir de Satan, qu'il a vaincu dans sa vie morale et démasqué dans sa prédication publique, est désormais dominé par une autre puissance venue d'en haut. Dans son espoir de rassembler les enfants d'Israël « comme une poule rassemble ses poussins sous ses ailes » (Mt 23:37), Jésus s'est écrié :

Je voyais Satan tomber du ciel comme un éclair (Lu 10:18).

Hélas, ce n'est pas jusqu'en enfer que Satan a été précipité ; il a été retenu sur la terre. Il a ameuté contre Jésus non seulement les pervers et les incrédules, les grands et le sacerdoce, mais même les pharisiens, les fervents de la Thora dont Jésus avait escompté l'appui :

En ne se faisant pas baptiser par Jean, ils ont annulé le dessein de Dieu à leur égard (Lu 7:30).

Puisque l'Israël selon la chair se dérobe-- « vous ne l'avez pas voulu ! » (Mt 23:37) --, Jésus entre résolument dans la voie crucifiante et fonde l'Israël selon l'Esprit. Il choisit pour cela ses douze apôtres. Cette compagnie des Douze, en qui Jésus crée la première cellule du Royaume de Dieu, est à ses yeux le véritable « reste », le « faible reste » qu'avaient entrevu les prophètes (Esa 10 et 1, Jer 33:3,6, etc.). Il met ces Douze à part ; il les consacre dans son sermon sur la montagne (voir art.), dont la loi, impraticable à la lettre pour l'individu isolé dans le monde hostile à Dieu (Mt 5), est toute conçue en vue d'un milieu spécial, du nouvel Israël qui réalisera, qui réalise déjà maintenant dans la personne des apôtres le Royaume de Dieu sur la terre. C'est parce que Jésus voit dans le collège des apôtres auxquels bientôt se joint un cercle intime, le « reste » sauvé, régénéré, en qui Dieu vient d'établir son règne sur la terre, qu'il répond à Jean-Baptiste que l'activité du Royaume de Dieu ici-bas a déjà commencé et qu'il porte déjà ses fruits (Mt 11). C'est aussi pour cela qu'il répond aux pharisiens qui lui demandent quand viendra le Royaume de Dieu : « Le Royaume de Dieu est au milieu de vous » (Lu 17:20). A mesure qu'approche l'heure rédemptrice qui permettra l'extension du Royaume par l'effusion de l'Esprit, Jésus se consacre toujours plus aux entretiens intimes avec ses disciples. Il les isole, il les éclaire, il leur explique « le mystère du Royaume de Dieu » (Mr 4:10,34 Mt 13:10, Lu 8:9, cf. Lu 6:20 9:18 16:1, Mr 7:24-31 8:27, etc.). Le dernier soir, il les unit dans la sainte Cène ; ressuscité, il en fait les missionnaires du monde.

Allez ! Enseignez toutes les nations (Mt 28:19).

Notre Père qui es aux cieux, que ton règne vienne ! (Mt 6)

Après avoir montré comment Jésus est resté fidèle au prophétisme dans la façon dont il a conçu et réalisé la fondation de son Royaume, il reste à indiquer avec quelle sûreté l'intuition inspirée des prophètes les avait amenés à entrevoir et à caractériser en des prédictions éparses le chemin par lequel le Messie à venir devait passer pour établir son Royaume parmi les hommes.

Comme il traversait Jérico pour la dernière fois, Jésus a dit à ses disciples :

Voici, nous montons à Jérusalem. Eh bien ! toutes les choses qui ont été écrites par les prophètes au sujet du Fils de l'homme vont recevoir leur accomplissement (Lu 18:31).

Sur le chemin d'Emmaüs, il reproche à deux disciples qu'il venait d'aborder d'avoir :

-un coeur lent à croire tout ce que les prophètes ont dit ! Puis, commençant par Moïse et continuant par tous les prophètes, il leur expliqua dans toutes les Écritures ce qui le concernait (Lu 24:25-27).

Ainsi Jésus a eu le clair sentiment d'être venu en ce monde pour servir d'aboutissement à la prophétie messianique. « Je suis venu, a-t-il dit, accomplir les prophètes » (Mt 5:17). L'a-t-il fait ?

Que signifie le mot « accomplir » ? Dans Plutarque : réaliser Dans Hérodote : porter à la perfection. Dans Aristote : féconder. Examinons ce triple sens. Comme un prisme triangulaire décompose le rayon du soleil, le mot « accomplir », avec son triple sens, va nous permettre de voir comment Jésus a exaucé la prophétie messianique.

1° « Je suis venu réaliser les prophètes. » Jésus a-t-il été le prophète incarnant dans sa personne les caractères que ses précurseurs lui avaient à l'avance attribués ? Oui.

De la première page de la Bible hébraïque, annonçant que « la postérité de la femme écraserait la tête du serpent » (Ge 3:15, cf. Lu 10:18), jusqu'au dernier oracle annonçant à Jérusalem :

« Voici ton Roi qui vient à toi » (Zac 9:9, Jn 12:15),

tous les traits marqués par les prophètes :

Pacificateur portant le sceptre de Juda (Ge 49:10, Lu 19:42, Mt 5:9), Successeur de Moïse (De 18:15, Jn 14:5 5:46), Fils de David au trône éternel (2Sa 7:16, Mr 11:10), Emmanuel (Esa 7:14, Mt 1:23). Prince de la Paix (Esa 9:5, Lu 1:79 2:14 19:42, Jn 16:33), Enfant de Bethléhem (Mic 5:1, Lu 2:4-7), Germe de justice (Jer 23:5 et suivant, Mt 5:6,16,20), bon Berger (Eze 34:23 et suivant, Jn 10:1,16), Messie porteur de l'Évangile (Esa 61:1, Jn 4:25, Mr 1:14). Homme de douleur (Esa 53:3 et suivant, Mt 20:28, Lu 24:26), Soleil de justice apportant la guérison dans ses rayons (Mal 4:2, Lu 1:78 Mt 11:5), Roi humble monté sur le poulain d'une ânesse (Za 9:9, Mr 11:7), Dieu au milieu d'Israël, répandant son Esprit sur toute chair, (cf. Joe 2:28,29, Jn 14:16, Mt 28:19) Pierre lancée d'en haut, sans le secours d'aucune main, et renversant la puissance des empires du paganisme, (cf. Da 2:34, Lu 20:18) Fils de l'homme au règne impérissable (Da 7:14, Mr 13:26, Lu 1:33), Agneau de Dieu qui ôte le péché du monde (Jn 1:29-37 Esa 53:7),
ont été accomplis à la lettre dans l'apparition du Fils de Dieu sur la terre.

Ces caractères, et bien d'autres encore, donnant à l'avance la physionomie du Christ, nous mettent en présence d'un phénomène sans analogue dans la littérature des hommes ; phénomène que les lois ordinaires de l'histoire n'expliquent pas, mais dans lequel on retrouve la marque du dessein de Dieu dans l'évolution de la pensée d'Israël et la preuve de l'inspiration de l'A.T.

2° « Je suis venu porter à la perfection les prophètes. » Nourri des saints livres depuis son enfance, Jésus, en grandissant, s'est pénétré de la pensée des prophètes ; son âme a été enflammée par leurs appels, orientée par leurs oracles, et c'est pour entreprendre la carrière du Messie annoncé qu'il se rend au baptême où il reçoit la maîtrise de l'Esprit (Mt 3:13-17, Mr 1:9-11, Lu 3:2 et suivant, Jn 1:32-34). Dès l'entrée de son ministère, Jésus déclare qu'il vient apporter un témoignage (Jn 3:11 33). Il accepte pour lui le titre de prophète (Jn 3:2, Mt 21:11). Il se montre prophète par le discernement miraculeux, le don de seconde vue qu'il possède (Jn 1 et 4) et par son pouvoir sur la nature. Il atteste qu'en tant que prophète il est venu reprendre, compléter, fondre en un Evangile, incarner dans sa personne l'enseignement des prophètes et en étendre à l'infini la portée. Et c'est ce qu'il fait. Dans son activité révélatrice, qui n'est pas un enseignement systématique, mais, sous les formes les plus variées dans ses paroles et dans ses actes, un appel constant à la conscience, Jésus part des principes de Moïse : Dieu est unique, Dieu est vivant, la morale est fondée sur la religion (Ex 20). Puis il confirme les oracles d'Amos, prédicateur de la justice ; d'Osée, prédicateur de l'amour ; d'Esaïe, prédicateur de la sainteté ; de Michée, prédicateur du culte en esprit (Mic 6) ; de Jérémie, qui annonce la nouvelle alliance inscrite dans les coeurs (Jer 31) ; d'Ezéchiel, prédicateur de la responsabilité individuelle (Eze 18) ; du second Esaïe, annonciateur des souffrances expiatoires du Messie (Esa 53) ; du livre de Daniel, révélant la venue du royaume de Dieu (ch. 7) et la récompense céleste des justes (Da 12, cf. Mt 13:43). Jésus ne se contente pas de reprendre les traits épars de l'enseignement des prophètes. Il les unit, les complète, les présente en un Evangile avec autorité. La puissance d'en haut, qui s'emparait des prophètes aux heures de révélation, les élevait à une inspiration qui les faisait qualifier de Voyants et d'Hommes de l'Esprit Mais cette inspiration était intermittente, emportée, inégale. Ils entrevoyaient les oracles de Jéhovah. C'est assez de les lire pour se rendre compte du caractère partiel de leur révélation : Esaïe prêche Emmanuel et la victoire finale du Messie, mais il ne voit pas le Messie souffrant, rédempteur ; son regard sur l'histoire ne porte pas au delà de la destruction de l'Assyrie ; Jérémie annonce la nouvelle alliance, celle du coeur, mais il ne parle pas de l'expiation nécessaire et s'arrête moins à la personne du Messie qu'à l'oeuvre messianique elle-même ; Ezéchiel conditionne la venue du règne messianique par l'organisation rituelle ; Zacharie croit que le Messie est Zorobabel ; le 2 e Esaïe arrive avec peine à individualiser le Serviteur souffrant et ne parle pas de l'effusion de l'Esprit ; Joe annonce que l'Esprit sera répandu sur toute chair, mais il passe sous silence l'oeuvre rédemptrice qui permettra la Pentecôte, etc.

Ainsi, chaque prophète apporte, si j'ose dire, une couleur du soleil, mais aucun la lumière intégrale ; Jésus seul la réunit en un faisceau. Les prophètes, déterminés par le temps et l'espace, ne voient que les vérités perceptibles sur leur chemin ; Jésus, qui vient de Dieu, est au carrefour de tous -les chemins ; il en voit l'harmonie et l'aboutissement. Les autres avaient des visions sur Dieu, lui a la vision de Dieu : de là la plénitude et l'autorité de son verbe. Les autres apportaient des messages partiels et des révélations relatives ; toujours maître de lui et sûr de sa parole, Jésus déclare : « Nu ! ne connaît le Père que le Fils, et celui à qui le Fils veut le révéler » (Mt 11:27) ; comme Fils unique du Père, il surpasse les autres prophètes de toute son autorité divine : « Moïse et les anciens ont dit... ; mais moi, je vous dis... » (Mt 5). Ce qui fait la souveraine et définitive maîtrise de son message évangélique, c'est que cet Evangile embrasse tout l'ensemble des dispensations du Dieu de qui, lui-même, il procède.

Mais Jésus fait plus que porter à sa perfection l'enseignement prophétique : il l'incarne, il le démontre, il le montre réalisé dans sa propre vie. Certes, les prophètes d'Israël ont dominé leur siècle, mais l'oracle qu'ils apportaient les a, à son tour, dominés. Leur personnalité en était subjuguée, non transformée. La force divine qui était en eux les conduisait plutôt qu'elle ne les pénétrait. Ils étaient les hommes de l'Esprit, non des hommes spirituels. Les actes étranges accomplis par Osée, par Esaïe, les contradictions de l'âme de Jérémie, les maladies, les découragements, les mutismes extatiques du visionnaire Ezéchiel, les mouvements de violence que nous relevons chez d'autres et l'intermittence de leur action, nous montrent assez que les prophètes étaient, comme dit Jacques, « des hommes de la même nature que nous ». Le fait que l'A. T, n'a gardé de la plupart d'entre eux que les discours et non les actes prouve qu'ils se distinguèrent de leurs contemporains et agirent sur eux davantage par l'inspiration de leur parole que par l'ascendant de leur vie.

Le cas de Jésus est tout autre. Il n'est pas seulement, à la suite des prophètes et plus haut que les prophètes, l'annonciateur de messages révélés : il se présente lui-même comme une révélation continue. Les autres étaient mus par l'Esprit ; lui, il est l'Esprit (2Co 3:17). Les autres étaient les hommes de Dieu ; lui, il est l'Homme-Dieu. Sa personne est l'expression parfaite de l'enseignement prophétique porté à sa perfection ; et parce que cette personne sainte est l'expression parfaite de la filialité par rapport à Dieu, Jésus prophète révèle tout à la fois ce que doit être l'homme dans sa stature intégrale et ce qu'est Dieu. Ce qu'est Dieu... En vain, les docteurs de la théologie ont essayé de nous représenter Dieu en le qualifiant de grands mots : Infini, Eternel, Parfait, Tout-présent, Tout-scient, Tout-puissant, etc., mots qui ne nous rendent Dieu ni intelligible ni sensible parce qu'ils arrivent, froids, de la sphère lointaine de l'absolu, vers nous qui vivons dans la sphère du relatif. Le Dieu qui nous échappe dans son essence intime, mais qui nous est connaissable par voie morale, nous devient accessible et objet d'expérience dans la personne de Jésus : « Qui m'a vu a vu le Père... Celui qui m'aime sera aimé de mon Père, nous viendrons à lui et nous ferons notre demeure chez lui » (Jn 14:9,23). Ainsi, par la communion avec le Christ, l'essence de Dieu lui-même se communique à la nature humaine pour l'éclairer, l'inspirer, la sauver. Voilà la bonne nouvelle : l'Évangile. Désormais, les prophètes sont exaucés : « Vivre, c'est Christ. »

Débordant les besoins de l'âme individuelle et les voeux de la religion particulariste des Juifs, la parole révélatrice du Christ s'étend à la période à venir sur laquelle les prophètes n'avaient pu donner que quelques indications générales. Elle prescrit de communiquer son Evangile rédempteur à toute créature, dans tous les temps, et fixe les conditions dans lesquelles le règne de Dieu s'étendra sur toute la terre. Quand Jésus a achevé de parler, la conscience humaine a achevé d'interroger. Tout est dit. Sous l'effusion de l'Esprit du Christ, la voie est ouverte par le progrès indéfini vers l'idéal auquel l'humanité aspire : « Dieu tout en tous.  » C'est ainsi que Jésus, portant à la perfection la révélation des voyants d'Israël, se manifeste celui en qui les disciples d'Emmaüs ont salué « le prophète puissant en oeuvres et en paroles » (Lu 24:19).

3° « Je suis venu pour féconder les prophètes » , c'est-à-dire « pour faire porter son fruit à l'oeuvre de mes devanciers ».

Comment Jésus a-t-il accompli cette tâche ? En reprenant la vocation des prophètes et en la sublimant par une absolue sainteté.

Comme les prophètes, en tant que représentant du Dieu de justice et d'amour, et voulant les hommes pour Dieu, Jésus fait face à l'humanité, il la trouble, il lui reproche sa vie mauvaise, et, après les prophètes, il porte les conséquences de cette attitude héroïque.

Comme Moïse, il ordonne, il exhorte, il supplie, il se jette en médiateur entre son peuple coupable et la colère divine qui menace de frapper. Comme Amos, il parle en justicier, ameute contre lui les forces conjurées de l'orgueil et de la propre justice et se voit chassé par les chefs attitrés du peuple élu. Comme Jérémie, qui voulait inscrire la nouvelle alliance dans les coeurs, il est méconnu, méprisé, trahi, emprisonné, martyrisé. Mais c'est ici qu'éclate la différence entre l'oeuvre des prophètes et l'oeuvre de Jésus-Christ : les voyants d'Israël étaient des médiateurs humains, et tout leur héroïsme n'empêchait pas qu'ils fussent « de la terre » comme les autres hommes et pécheurs au même titre que les foules auxquelles s'adressait par eux le Verbe divin. Ils ont réussi par leur fidélité magnifique à se passer de main en main le flambeau de la vérité et à former le petit noyau de fidèles qui devait un jour constituer le berceau du Messie ; mais leur martyre n'a pu que provoquer, parmi le cercle étroit de leurs disciples, une stimulante pitié. Jésus au contraire, second Adam, pur de la tare originelle, vainqueur de la tentation au désert et rempli de l'Esprit qui lui donnait la maîtrise sur la nature, Jésus s'était mis, par sa sainteté absolue, dans une condition morale sur laquelle le mal et la mort n'ont plus de prise--car la mort est le salaire du péché. « Je mets devant toi la vie et le bien, la mort et le mal. Choisis la vie... afin que tu sois heureux... dans le pays que Jéhovah, ton Dieu, te donne » (De 30:15,19 4:40), avait dit le premier des prophètes. Avons-nous bien compris, dans notre théologie chrétienne, que le bien et la vie sont indissolublement liés et constituent avec le bonheur la trinité spirituelle où s'exprime la personne même de Dieu ? J'imagine que si Satan avait compris cela, il n'aurait pas risqué la suprême partie qui fit monter Jésus au Calvaire. Le Christ, étant pur, avait le droit de ne pas souffrir, le pouvoir de ne pas mourir. Un moment, le divin prophète a espéré gagner son peuple par sa parole et par ses oeuvres : « Jérusalem, que de fois j'ai voulu rassembler tes enfants, comme une poule rassemble ses poussins sous ses ailes, et vous ne l'avez pas voulu ! » (Mt 23:37). Mais quand il a vu les puissances infernales entraîner contre lui les Juifs pour le combat mortel, Jésus, maintenant jusqu'au bout la vocation médiatrice des prophètes, comme il avait volontairement accepté de souffrir, a volontairement accepté de mourir (Mr 14:36, Jn 12:27 10:18). C'est là la coupe qui lui fit, en Gethsémané, suer une sueur de sang. Il se rend à Jérusalem, « tueuse de prophètes » (Lu 13:34), dévoile les intentions homicides de ses adversaires dans la parabole des vignerons (Mr 12:1,12), se compare lui-même au « grain » qui doit « mourir » pour que le fruit qu'il porte en lui éclose (Jn 12:24) et, couronné d'épines, donne sa vie sur la croix. Mais le martyre accepté par Jésus provoque dans la nature, dans l'humanité, dans le ciel même une contradiction telle, que le tombeau a rendu son cadavre, que les pécheurs ont eu l'âme brisée de repentance, et que l'Esprit de Dieu, répondant au dernier soupir de Golgotha, est venu le jour de la Pentecôte fonder l'humanité nouvelle, sauvée, régénérée, victorieuse. « Tu ne permettras pas que ton bien-aimé voie la corruption », avait dit la prophétie antique (Ps 16:10). C'est bien cela. Et Pierre a bien traduit quand il a dit : « Tu ne permettras pas que ton saint voie la corruption » (Ac 2:27). Amour divin et vie, sainteté et vie sont inséparables. C'est pourquoi la puissance de Satan s'épuise au Calvaire, tandis que la sainteté salutaire du Christ triomphe dans sa résurrection. Ainsi Jésus de Nazareth, expiant dans sa chair sainte les péchés de tous les hommes, y compris ceux des voyants d'Israël (Jn 12:33), a exaucé les voeux de ses précurseurs, couronné leur labeur et instauré sur la terre le Royaume de Dieu, en semant la vie éternelle dans le sillon sur lequel les prophètes hébreux étaient tombés sans même savoir quel serait leur lendemain. La résurrection de Jésus ressuscite l'humanité. Prophète accomplissant les prophètes, il a lancé dans le monde une nouvelle lignée de prophètes, les éveilleurs spirituels qui, depuis dix-neuf siècles, surgissent un peu partout dans l'Église, l'obligent à tenir les yeux levés vers le Vivant, y provoquent les floraisons de l'Esprit. Sainte filiation des voyants de la Nouvelle Alliance, ils préparent, de résurrection en résurrection, l'avènement du Christ glorifié, comme les voyants de l'Ancienne Alliance avaient préparé son berceau. BIBLIOGRAPHIE. --Les prophètes d'Israël ont suscité dans la littérature théologique un si grand nombre d'ouvrages, de monographies, d'articles et de commentaires, qu'on ne saurait donner ici la liste de ces publications sans encombrer inutilement les colonnes du Dictionnaire. En outre, les problèmes d'histoire et de religion soulevés par les écrits des prophètes, lesquels s'étendent sur plusieurs siècles, présentent une telle complexité qu'on ne saurait répartir strictement les auteurs en écoles sans courir le risque de classifications arbitraires. Les publications indiquées ci-dessous dans leur ordre chronologique n'ont d'autre intention que d'esquisser la marche de la science biblique dans l'étude du prophétisme hébreu au cours du siècle écoulé (1833-1934). On y trouvera des ouvrages qui ont marqué dans l'histoire de la critique, et les livres qui, parce qu'ils ont été composés ou traduits en français, sont à la portée de tous nos lecteurs.

      18 All the people perceived the thunderings, the lightnings, the sound of the trumpet, and the mountain smoking. When the people saw it, they trembled, and stayed at a distance.
      19 They said to Moses, "Speak with us yourself, and we will listen; but don't let God speak with us, lest we die."
      20 Moses said to the people, "Don't be afraid, for God has come to test you, and that his fear may be before you, that you won't sin."
      21 The people stayed at a distance, and Moses drew near to the thick darkness where God was.

      25 If you make me an altar of stone, you shall not build it of cut stones; for if you lift up your tool on it, you have polluted it.
      26 Neither shall you go up by steps to my altar, that your nakedness may not be exposed to it.'

      Lévitique 2

      1 "'When anyone offers an offering of a meal offering to Yahweh, his offering shall be of fine flour; and he shall pour oil on it, and put frankincense on it.
      2 He shall bring it to Aaron's sons, the priests; and he shall take his handful of its fine flour, and of its oil, with all its frankincense; and the priest shall burn its memorial on the altar, an offering made by fire, of a pleasant aroma to Yahweh.
      3 That which is left of the meal offering shall be Aaron's and his sons'. It is a most holy thing of the offerings of Yahweh made by fire.
      4 "'When you offer an offering of a meal offering baked in the oven, it shall be unleavened cakes of fine flour mixed with oil, or unleavened wafers anointed with oil.
      5 If your offering is a meal offering of the griddle, it shall be of unleavened fine flour, mixed with oil.
      6 You shall cut it in pieces, and pour oil on it. It is a meal offering.
      7 If your offering is a meal offering of the pan, it shall be made of fine flour with oil.
      8 You shall bring the meal offering that is made of these things to Yahweh: and it shall be presented to the priest, and he shall bring it to the altar.
      9 The priest shall take from the meal offering its memorial, and shall burn it on the altar, an offering made by fire, of a pleasant aroma to Yahweh.
      10 That which is left of the meal offering shall be Aaron's and his sons'. It is a thing most holy of the offerings of Yahweh made by fire.
      11 "'No meal offering, which you shall offer to Yahweh, shall be made with yeast; for you shall burn no yeast, nor any honey, as an offering made by fire to Yahweh.
      12 As an offering of firstfruits you shall offer them to Yahweh: but they shall not ascend for a pleasant aroma on the altar.
      13 Every offering of your meal offering you shall season with salt; neither shall you allow the salt of the covenant of your God to be lacking from your meal offering. With all your offerings you shall offer salt.
      14 "'If you offer a meal offering of first fruits to Yahweh, you shall offer for the meal offering of your first fruits grain in the ear parched with fire, bruised grain of the fresh ear.
      15 You shall put oil on it, and lay frankincense on it: it is a meal offering.
      16 The priest shall burn as its memorial, part of its bruised grain, and part of its oil, along with all its frankincense: it is an offering made by fire to Yahweh.

      Esaïe 1

      1 The vision of Isaiah the son of Amoz, which he saw concerning Judah and Jerusalem, in the days of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah, kings of Judah.

      Esaïe 7

      1 It happened in the days of Ahaz the son of Jotham, the son of Uzziah, king of Judah, that Rezin the king of Syria, and Pekah the son of Remaliah, king of Israel, went up to Jerusalem to war against it, but could not prevail against it.
      2 It was told the house of David, saying, "Syria is allied with Ephraim." His heart trembled, and the heart of his people, as the trees of the forest tremble with the wind.
      3 Then Yahweh said to Isaiah, "Go out now to meet Ahaz, you, and Shearjashub your son, at the end of the conduit of the upper pool, on the highway of the fuller's field.
      4 Tell him, 'Be careful, and keep calm. Don't be afraid, neither let your heart be faint because of these two tails of smoking torches, for the fierce anger of Rezin and Syria, and of the son of Remaliah.
      5 Because Syria, Ephraim, and the son of Remaliah, have plotted evil against you, saying,
      6 "Let's go up against Judah, and tear it apart, and let's divide it among ourselves, and set up a king in its midst, even the son of Tabeel."
      7 This is what the Lord Yahweh says: "It shall not stand, neither shall it happen."
      8 For the head of Syria is Damascus, and the head of Damascus is Rezin; and within sixty-five years Ephraim shall be broken in pieces, so that it shall not be a people;
      9 and the head of Ephraim is Samaria, and the head of Samaria is Remaliah's son. If you will not believe, surely you shall not be established.'"
      10 Yahweh spoke again to Ahaz, saying,
      11 "Ask a sign of Yahweh your God; ask it either in the depth, or in the height above."
      12 But Ahaz said, "I will not ask, neither will I tempt Yahweh."
      13 He said, "Listen now, house of David. Is it not enough for you to try the patience of men, that you will try the patience of my God also?
      14 Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Behold, the virgin will conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.
      15 He shall eat butter and honey when he knows to refuse the evil, and choose the good.
      16 For before the child knows to refuse the evil, and choose the good, the land whose two kings you abhor shall be forsaken.
      17 Yahweh will bring on you, on your people, and on your father's house, days that have not come, from the day that Ephraim departed from Judah; even the king of Assyria.
      18 It will happen in that day that Yahweh will whistle for the fly that is in the uttermost part of the rivers of Egypt, and for the bee that is in the land of Assyria.
      19 They shall come, and shall all rest in the desolate valleys, in the clefts of the rocks, on all thorn hedges, and on all pastures.
      20 In that day the Lord will shave with a razor that is hired in the parts beyond the River, even with the king of Assyria, the head and the hair of the feet; and it shall also consume the beard.
      21 It shall happen in that day that a man shall keep alive a young cow, and two sheep;
      22 and it shall happen, that because of the abundance of milk which they shall give he shall eat butter: for everyone will eat butter and honey that is left in the midst of the land.
      23 It will happen in that day that every place where there were a thousand vines at a thousand silver shekels, shall be for briers and thorns.
      24 People will go there with arrows and with bow, because all the land will be briers and thorns.
      25 All the hills that were cultivated with the hoe, you shall not come there for fear of briers and thorns; but it shall be for the sending forth of oxen, and for the treading of sheep."

      Esaïe 8

      1 Yahweh said to me, "Take a large tablet, and write on it with a man's pen, 'For Maher Shalal Hash Baz; '
      2 and I will take for myself faithful witnesses to testify: Uriah the priest, and Zechariah the son of Jeberechiah."
      3 I went to the prophetess, and she conceived, and bore a son. Then Yahweh said to me, "Call his name 'Maher Shalal Hash Baz.'
      4 For before the child knows how to say, 'My father,' and, 'My mother,' the riches of Damascus and the spoil of Samaria will be carried away by the king of Assyria."
      5 Yahweh spoke to me yet again, saying,
      6 "Because this people have refused the waters of Shiloah that go softly, and rejoice in Rezin and Remaliah's son;
      7 now therefore, behold, the Lord brings upon them the mighty flood waters of the River: the king of Assyria and all his glory. It will come up over all its channels, and go over all its banks.
      8 It will sweep onward into Judah. It will overflow and pass through; it will reach even to the neck; and the stretching out of its wings will fill the breadth of your land, Immanuel.
      9 Make an uproar, you peoples, and be broken in pieces! Listen, all you from far countries: dress for battle, and be shattered! Dress for battle, and be shattered!
      10 Take counsel together, and it will be brought to nothing; speak the word, and it will not stand: for God is with us."
      11 For Yahweh spoke thus to me with a strong hand, and instructed me not to walk in the way of this people, saying,
      12 "Don't say, 'A conspiracy!' concerning all about which this people say, 'A conspiracy!' neither fear their threats, nor be terrorized.
      13 Yahweh of Armies is who you must respect as holy. He is the one you must fear. He is the one you must dread.
      14 He will be a sanctuary, but for both houses of Israel, he will be a trap and a snare for the inhabitants of Jerusalem.
      15 Many will stumble over it, fall, be broken, be snared, and be captured."
      16 Wrap up the testimony. Seal the law among my disciples.
      17 I will wait for Yahweh, who hides his face from the house of Jacob, and I will look for him.
      18 Behold, I and the children whom Yahweh has given me are for signs and for wonders in Israel from Yahweh of Armies, who dwells in Mount Zion.
      19 When they tell you, "Consult with those who have familiar spirits and with the wizards, who chirp and who mutter:" shouldn't a people consult with their God? Should they consult the dead on behalf of the living?
      20 Turn to the law and to the testimony! If they don't speak according to this word, surely there is no morning for them.
      21 They will pass through it, very distressed and hungry; and it will happen that when they are hungry, they will worry, and curse by their king and by their God. They will turn their faces upward,
      22 and look to the earth, and see distress, darkness, and the gloom of anguish. They will be driven into thick darkness.

      Esaïe 9

      1 But there shall be no more gloom for her who was in anguish. In the former time, he brought into contempt the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali; but in the latter time he has made it glorious, by the way of the sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the nations.
      2 The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light. Those who lived in the land of the shadow of death, on them the light has shined.
      3 You have multiplied the nation. You have increased their joy. They rejoice before you according to the joy in harvest, as men rejoice when they divide the spoil.
      4 For the yoke of his burden, and the staff of his shoulder, the rod of his oppressor, you have broken as in the day of Midian.
      5 For all the armor of the armed man in the noisy battle, and the garments rolled in blood, will be for burning, fuel for the fire.
      6 For to us a child is born. To us a son is given; and the government will be on his shoulders. His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
      7 Of the increase of his government and of peace there shall be no end, on the throne of David, and on his kingdom, to establish it, and to uphold it with justice and with righteousness from that time on, even forever. The zeal of Yahweh of Armies will perform this.
      8 The Lord sent a word into Jacob, and it falls on Israel.
      9 All the people will know, including Ephraim and the inhabitants of Samaria, who say in pride and in arrogance of heart,
      10 "The bricks have fallen, but we will build with cut stone. The sycamore fig trees have been cut down, but we will put cedars in their place."
      11 Therefore Yahweh will set up on high against him the adversaries of Rezin, and will stir up his enemies,
      12 The Syrians in front, and the Philistines behind; and they will devour Israel with open mouth. For all this, his anger is not turned away, but his hand is stretched out still.
      13 Yet the people have not turned to him who struck them, neither have they sought Yahweh of Armies.
      14 Therefore Yahweh will cut off from Israel head and tail, palm branch and reed, in one day.
      15 The elder and the honorable man is the head, and the prophet who teaches lies is the tail.
      16 For those who lead this people lead them astray; and those who are led by them are destroyed.
      17 Therefore the Lord will not rejoice over their young men, neither will he have compassion on their fatherless and widows; for everyone is profane and an evildoer, and every mouth speaks folly. For all this his anger is not turned away, but his hand is stretched out still.
      18 For wickedness burns like a fire. It devours the briers and thorns; yes, it kindles in the thickets of the forest, and they roll upward in a column of smoke.
      19 Through the wrath of Yahweh of Armies, the land is burnt up; and the people are the fuel for the fire. No one spares his brother.
      20 One will devour on the right hand, and be hungry; and he will eat on the left hand, and they will not be satisfied. Everyone will eat the flesh of his own arm:
      21 Manasseh, Ephraim; and Ephraim, Manasseh; and they together shall be against Judah. For all this his anger is not turned away, but his hand is stretched out still.

      Esaïe 10

      1 Woe to those who decree unrighteous decrees, and to the writers who write oppressive decrees;
      2 to deprive the needy from justice, and to rob the poor among my people of their rights, that widows may be their spoil, and that they may make the fatherless their prey!
      3 What will you do in the day of visitation, and in the desolation which will come from afar? To whom will you flee for help? Where will you leave your wealth?
      4 They will only bow down under the prisoners, and will fall under the slain. For all this his anger is not turned away, but his hand is stretched out still.
      5 Alas Assyrian, the rod of my anger, the staff in whose hand is my indignation!
      6 I will send him against a profane nation, and against the people who anger me will I give him a command to take the spoil and to take the prey, and to tread them down like the mire of the streets.
      7 However he doesn't mean so, neither does his heart think so; but it is in his heart to destroy, and to cut off not a few nations.
      8 For he says, "Aren't all of my princes kings?
      9 Isn't Calno like Carchemish? Isn't Hamath like Arpad? Isn't Samaria like Damascus?"
      10 As my hand has found the kingdoms of the idols, whose engraved images exceeded those of Jerusalem and of Samaria;
      11 shall I not, as I have done to Samaria and her idols, so do to Jerusalem and her idols?
      12 Therefore it will happen that, when the Lord has performed his whole work on Mount Zion and on Jerusalem, I will punish the fruit of the willful proud heart of the king of Assyria, and the insolence of his haughty looks.
      13 For he has said, "By the strength of my hand I have done it, and by my wisdom; for I have understanding: and I have removed the boundaries of the peoples, and have robbed their treasures. Like a valiant man I have brought down their rulers.
      14 My hand has found the riches of the peoples like a nest, and like one gathers eggs that are abandoned, have I gathered all the earth. There was no one who moved their wing, or that opened their mouth, or chirped."
      15 Should an axe brag against him who chops with it? Should a saw exalt itself above him who saws with it? As if a rod should lift those who lift it up, or as if a staff should lift up someone who is not wood.
      16 Therefore the Lord, Yahweh of Armies, will send among his fat ones leanness; and under his glory a burning will be kindled like the burning of fire.
      17 The light of Israel will be for a fire, and his Holy One for a flame; and it will burn and devour his thorns and his briers in one day.
      18 He will consume the glory of his forest, and of his fruitful field, both soul and body. It will be as when a standard bearer faints.
      19 The remnant of the trees of his forest shall be few, so that a child could write their number.
      20 It will come to pass in that day that the remnant of Israel, and those who have escaped from the house of Jacob will no more again lean on him who struck them, but shall lean on Yahweh, the Holy One of Israel, in truth.
      21 A remnant will return, even the remnant of Jacob, to the mighty God.
      22 For though your people, Israel, are like the sand of the sea, only a remnant of them will return. A destruction is determined, overflowing with righteousness.
      23 For the Lord, Yahweh of Armies, will make a full end, and that determined, in the midst of all the earth.
      24 Therefore the Lord, Yahweh of Armies, says "My people who dwell in Zion, don't be afraid of the Assyrian, though he strike you with the rod, and lift up his staff against you, as Egypt did.
      25 For yet a very little while, and the indignation against you will be accomplished, and my anger will be directed to his destruction."
      26 Yahweh of Armies will stir up a scourge against him, as in the slaughter of Midian at the rock of Oreb. His rod will be over the sea, and he will lift it up like he did against Egypt.
      27 It will happen in that day, that his burden will depart from off your shoulder, and his yoke from off your neck, and the yoke shall be destroyed because of the anointing oil.
      28 He has come to Aiath. He has passed through Migron. At Michmash he stores his baggage.
      29 They have gone over the pass. They have taken up their lodging at Geba. Ramah trembles. Gibeah of Saul has fled.
      30 Cry aloud with your voice, daughter of Gallim! Listen, Laishah! You poor Anathoth!
      31 Madmenah is a fugitive. The inhabitants of Gebim flee for safety.
      32 This very day he will halt at Nob. He shakes his hand at the mountain of the daughter of Zion, the hill of Jerusalem.
      33 Behold, the Lord, Yahweh of Armies, will lop the boughs with terror. The tall will be cut down, and the lofty will be brought low.
      34 He will cut down the thickets of the forest with iron, and Lebanon will fall by the Mighty One.

      Esaïe 11

      1 A shoot will come out of the stock of Jesse, and a branch out of his roots will bear fruit.
      2 The Spirit of Yahweh will rest on him: the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and of the fear of Yahweh.
      3 His delight will be in the fear of Yahweh. He will not judge by the sight of his eyes, neither decide by the hearing of his ears;
      4 but with righteousness he will judge the poor, and decide with equity for the humble of the earth. He will strike the earth with the rod of his mouth; and with the breath of his lips he will kill the wicked.
      5 Righteousness will be the belt of his waist, and faithfulness the belt of his waist.
      6 The wolf will live with the lamb, and the leopard will lie down with the young goat; The calf, the young lion, and the fattened calf together; and a little child will lead them.
      7 The cow and the bear will graze. Their young ones will lie down together. The lion will eat straw like the ox.
      8 The nursing child will play near a cobra's hole, and the weaned child will put his hand on the viper's den.
      9 They will not hurt nor destroy in all my holy mountain; for the earth will be full of the knowledge of Yahweh, as the waters cover the sea.
      10 It will happen in that day that the nations will seek the root of Jesse, who stands as a banner of the peoples; and his resting place will be glorious.
      11 It will happen in that day that the Lord will set his hand again the second time to recover the remnant that is left of his people from Assyria, from Egypt, from Pathros, from Cush, from Elam, from Shinar, from Hamath, and from the islands of the sea.
      12 He will set up a banner for the nations, and will assemble the outcasts of Israel, and gather together the dispersed of Judah from the four corners of the earth.
      13 The envy also of Ephraim will depart, and those who persecute Judah will be cut off. Ephraim won't envy Judah, and Judah won't persecute Ephraim.
      14 They will fly down on the shoulders of the Philistines on the west. Together they will plunder the children of the east. They will extend their power over Edom and Moab, and the children of Ammon will obey them.
      15 Yahweh will utterly destroy the tongue of the Egyptian sea; and with his scorching wind he will wave his hand over the River, and will split it into seven streams, and cause men to march over in sandals.
      16 There will be a highway for the remnant that is left of his people from Assyria, like there was for Israel in the day that he came up out of the land of Egypt.

      Esaïe 12

      1 In that day you will say, "I will give thanks to you, Yahweh; for though you were angry with me, your anger has turned away and you comfort me.
      2 Behold, God is my salvation. I will trust, and will not be afraid; for Yah, Yahweh, is my strength and song; and he has become my salvation."
      3 Therefore with joy you will draw water out of the wells of salvation.
      4 In that day you will say, "Give thanks to Yahweh! Call on his name. Declare his doings among the peoples. Proclaim that his name is exalted!
      5 Sing to Yahweh, for he has done excellent things! Let this be known in all the earth!
      6 Cry aloud and shout, you inhabitant of Zion; for the Holy One of Israel is great in the midst of you!"

      Esaïe 53

      1 Who has believed our message? To whom has the arm of Yahweh been revealed?
      2 For he grew up before him as a tender plant, and as a root out of dry ground. He has no good looks or majesty. When we see him, there is no beauty that we should desire him.
      3 He was despised, and rejected by men; a man of suffering, and acquainted with disease. He was despised as one from whom men hide their face; and we didn't respect him.
      4 Surely he has borne our sickness, and carried our suffering; yet we considered him plagued, struck by God, and afflicted.
      5 But he was pierced for our transgressions. He was crushed for our iniquities. The punishment that brought our peace was on him; and by his wounds we are healed.
      6 All we like sheep have gone astray. Everyone has turned to his own way; and Yahweh has laid on him the iniquity of us all.
      7 He was oppressed, yet when he was afflicted he didn't open his mouth. As a lamb that is led to the slaughter, and as a sheep that before its shearers is mute, so he didn't open his mouth.
      8 He was taken away by oppression and judgment; and as for his generation, who considered that he was cut off out of the land of the living and stricken for the disobedience of my people?
      9 They made his grave with the wicked, and with a rich man in his death; although he had done no violence, neither was any deceit in his mouth.
      10 Yet it pleased Yahweh to bruise him. He has caused him to suffer. When you make his soul an offering for sin, he shall see his seed. He shall prolong his days, and the pleasure of Yahweh shall prosper in his hand.
      11 After the suffering of his soul, he will see the light and be satisfied. My righteous servant will justify many by the knowledge of himself; and he will bear their iniquities.
      12 Therefore will I divide him a portion with the great, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong; because he poured out his soul to death, and was numbered with the transgressors; yet he bore the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors.

      Esaïe 61

      1 The Spirit of the Lord Yahweh is on me; because Yahweh has anointed me to preach good news to the humble. He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and release to those who are bound;
      2 to proclaim the year of Yahweh's favor, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all who mourn;
      3 to appoint to those who mourn in Zion, to give to them a garland for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they may be called trees of righteousness, the planting of Yahweh, that he may be glorified.
      4 They shall build the old wastes, they shall raise up the former desolations, and they shall repair the waste cities, the desolations of many generations.
      5 Strangers shall stand and feed your flocks, and foreigners shall be your plowmen and your vinedressers.
      6 But you shall be named the priests of Yahweh; men will call you the ministers of our God: you will eat the wealth of the nations, and you will boast in their glory.
      7 Instead of your shame you shall have double; and instead of dishonor they shall rejoice in their portion: therefore in their land they shall possess double; everlasting joy shall be to them.
      8 "For I, Yahweh, love justice, I hate robbery with iniquity; and I will give them their recompense in truth, and I will make an everlasting covenant with them.
      9 Their seed shall be known among the nations, and their offspring among the peoples; all who see them shall acknowledge them, that they are the seed which Yahweh has blessed."
      10 I will greatly rejoice in Yahweh, my soul shall be joyful in my God; for he has clothed me with the garments of salvation, he has covered me with the robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom decks himself with a garland, and as a bride adorns herself with her jewels.
      11 For as the earth brings forth its bud, and as the garden causes the things that are sown in it to spring forth; so the Lord Yahweh will cause righteousness and praise to spring forth before all the nations.

      Jérémie 23

      5 Behold, the days come, says Yahweh, that I will raise to David a righteous Branch, and he shall reign as king and deal wisely, and shall execute justice and righteousness in the land.

      1 At that time, says Yahweh, will I be the God of all the families of Israel, and they shall be my people.
      2 Thus says Yahweh, The people who were left of the sword found favor in the wilderness; even Israel, when I went to cause him to rest.
      3 Yahweh appeared of old to me, saying, Yes, I have loved you with an everlasting love: therefore with loving kindness have I drawn you.
      4 Again will I build you, and you shall be built, O virgin of Israel: again you shall be adorned with your tambourines, and shall go forth in the dances of those who make merry.

      8 Behold, I will bring them from the north country, and gather them from the uttermost parts of the earth, along with the blind and the lame, the woman with child and her who travails with child together: a great company shall they return here.
      9 They shall come with weeping; and with petitions will I lead them: I will cause them to walk by rivers of waters, in a straight way in which they shall not stumble; for I am a father to Israel, and Ephraim is my firstborn.
      10 Hear the word of Yahweh, you nations, and declare it in the islands afar off; and say, He who scattered Israel will gather him, and keep him, as shepherd does his flock.
      11 For Yahweh has ransomed Jacob, and redeemed him from the hand of him who was stronger than he.
      12 They shall come and sing in the height of Zion, and shall flow to the goodness of Yahweh, to the grain, and to the new wine, and to the oil, and to the young of the flock and of the herd: and their soul shall be as a watered garden; and they shall not sorrow any more at all.
      13 Then shall the virgin rejoice in the dance, and the young men and the old together; for I will turn their mourning into joy, and will comfort them, and make them rejoice from their sorrow.
      14 I will satiate the soul of the priests with fatness, and my people shall be satisfied with my goodness, says Yahweh.
      15 Thus says Yahweh: A voice is heard in Ramah, lamentation, and bitter weeping, Rachel weeping for her children; she refuses to be comforted for her children, because they are no more.
      16 Thus says Yahweh: Refrain your voice from weeping, and your eyes from tears; for your work shall be rewarded, says Yahweh; and they shall come again from the land of the enemy.
      17 There is hope for your latter end, says Yahweh; and your children shall come again to their own border.
      18 I have surely heard Ephraim bemoaning himself thus, You have chastised me, and I was chastised, as an untrained calf: turn me, and I shall be turned; for you are Yahweh my God.
      19 Surely after that I was turned, I repented; and after that I was instructed, I struck on my thigh: I was ashamed, yes, even confounded, because I bore the reproach of my youth.
      20 Is Ephraim my dear son? is he a darling child? for as often as I speak against him, I do earnestly remember him still: therefore my heart yearns for him; I will surely have mercy on him, says Yahweh.
      21 Set up road signs, make guideposts; set your heart toward the highway, even the way by which you went: turn again, virgin of Israel, turn again to these your cities.
      22 How long will you go here and there, you backsliding daughter? for Yahweh has created a new thing in the earth: a woman shall encompass a man.
      23 Thus says Yahweh of Armies, the God of Israel, Yet again shall they use this speech in the land of Judah and in its cities, when I shall bring again their captivity: Yahweh bless you, habitation of righteousness, mountain of holiness.
      24 Judah and all its cities shall dwell therein together, the farmers, and those who go about with flocks.
      25 For I have satiated the weary soul, and every sorrowful soul have I replenished.
      26 On this I awakened, and saw; and my sleep was sweet to me.
      27 Behold, the days come, says Yahweh, that I will sow the house of Israel and the house of Judah with the seed of man, and with the seed of animal.
      28 It shall happen that, like as I have watched over them to pluck up and to break down and to overthrow and to destroy and to afflict, so will I watch over them to build and to plant, says Yahweh.
      29 In those days they shall say no more, The fathers have eaten sour grapes, and the children's teeth are set on edge.
      30 But everyone shall die for his own iniquity: every man who eats the sour grapes, his teeth shall be set on edge.
      31 Behold, the days come, says Yahweh, that I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel, and with the house of Judah:
      32 not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt; which my covenant they broke, although I was a husband to them, says Yahweh.
      33 But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says Yahweh: I will put my law in their inward parts, and in their heart will I write it; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people:
      34 and they shall teach no more every man his neighbor, and every man his brother, saying, Know Yahweh; for they shall all know me, from their least to their greatest, says Yahweh: for I will forgive their iniquity, and their sin will I remember no more.
      35 Thus says Yahweh, who gives the sun for a light by day, and the ordinances of the moon and of the stars for a light by night, who stirs up the sea, so that its waves roar; Yahweh of Armies is his name:
      36 If these ordinances depart from before me, says Yahweh, then the seed of Israel also shall cease from being a nation before me forever.
      37 Thus says Yahweh: If heaven above can be measured, and the foundations of the earth searched out beneath, then will I also cast off all the seed of Israel for all that they have done, says Yahweh.
      38 Behold, the days come, says Yahweh, that the city shall be built to Yahweh from the tower of Hananel to the gate of the corner.
      39 The measuring line shall go out further straight onward to the hill Gareb, and shall turn about to Goah.
      40 The whole valley of the dead bodies and of the ashes, and all the fields to the brook Kidron, to the corner of the horse gate toward the east, shall be holy to Yahweh; it shall not be plucked up, nor thrown down any more forever.

      3 Call to me, and I will answer you, and will show you great things, and difficult, which you don't know.
      6 Behold, I will bring it health and cure, and I will cure them; and I will reveal to them abundance of peace and truth.

      Ezéchiel 18

      1 The word of Yahweh came to me again, saying,
      2 What do you mean, that you use this proverb concerning the land of Israel, saying, The fathers have eaten sour grapes, and the children's teeth are set on edge?
      3 As I live, says the Lord Yahweh, you shall not have [occasion] any more to use this proverb in Israel.

      9 has walked in my statutes, and has kept my ordinances, to deal truly; he is just, he shall surely live, says the Lord Yahweh.

      11 and who does not any of those [duties], but even has eaten on the mountains, and defiled his neighbor's wife,
      12 has wronged the poor and needy, has taken by robbery, has not restored the pledge, and has lifted up his eyes to the idols, has committed abomination,
      13 has given forth on interest, and has taken increase; shall he then live? he shall not live: he has done all these abominations; he shall surely die; his blood shall be on him.
      14 Now, behold, if he fathers a son, who sees all his father's sins, which he has done, and fears, and does not such like;
      15 who has not eaten on the mountains, neither has lifted up his eyes to the idols of the house of Israel, has not defiled his neighbor's wife,
      16 neither has wronged any, has not taken anything to pledge, neither has taken by robbery, but has given his bread to the hungry, and has covered the naked with a garment;
      17 who has withdrawn his hand from the poor, who has not received interest nor increase, has executed my ordinances, has walked in my statutes; he shall not die for the iniquity of his father, he shall surely live.
      18 As for his father, because he cruelly oppressed, robbed his brother, and did that which is not good among his people, behold, he shall die in his iniquity.
      19 Yet you say, Why doesn't the son bear the iniquity of the father? When the son has done that which is lawful and right, and has kept all my statutes, and has done them, he shall surely live.
      20 The soul who sins, he shall die: the son shall not bear the iniquity of the father, neither shall the father bear the iniquity of the son; the righteousness of the righteous shall be on him, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be on him.
      21 But if the wicked turn from all his sins that he has committed, and keep all my statutes, and do that which is lawful and right, he shall surely live, he shall not die.
      22 None of his transgressions that he has committed shall be remembered against him: in his righteousness that he has done he shall live.
      23 Have I any pleasure in the death of the wicked? says the Lord Yahweh; and not rather that he should return from his way, and live?
      24 But when the righteous turns away from his righteousness, and commits iniquity, and does according to all the abominations that the wicked man does, shall he live? None of his righteous deeds that he has done shall be remembered: in his trespass that he has trespassed, and in his sin that he has sinned, in them shall he die.
      25 Yet you say, The way of the Lord is not equal. Hear now, house of Israel: Is my way not equal? Aren't your ways unequal?
      26 When the righteous man turns away from his righteousness, and commits iniquity, and dies therein; in his iniquity that he has done shall he die.
      27 Again, when the wicked man turns away from his wickedness that he has committed, and does that which is lawful and right, he shall save his soul alive.
      28 Because he considers, and turns away from all his transgressions that he has committed, he shall surely live, he shall not die.
      29 Yet the house of Israel says, "The way of the Lord is not fair." House of Israel, aren't my ways fair? Aren't your ways unfair?
      30 Therefore I will judge you, house of Israel, everyone according to his ways, says the Lord Yahweh. Return, and turn yourselves from all your transgressions; so iniquity shall not be your ruin.
      31 Cast away from you all your transgressions, in which you have transgressed; and make yourself a new heart and a new spirit: for why will you die, house of Israel?
      32 For I have no pleasure in the death of him who dies, says the Lord Yahweh: therefore turn yourselves, and live.

      5 Behold, another animal, a second, like a bear; and it was raised up on one side, and three ribs were in its mouth between its teeth: and they said thus to it, Arise, devour much flesh.
      6 After this I saw, and behold, another, like a leopard, which had on its back four wings of a bird; the animal had also four heads; and dominion was given to it.
      7 After this I saw in the night visions, and, behold, a fourth animal, awesome and powerful, and strong exceedingly; and it had great iron teeth; it devoured and broke in pieces, and stamped the residue with its feet: and it was diverse from all the animals that were before it; and it had ten horns.
      8 I considered the horns, and behold, there came up among them another horn, a little one, before which three of the first horns were plucked up by the roots: and behold, in this horn were eyes like the eyes of a man, and a mouth speaking great things.
      9 I saw until thrones were placed, and one who was ancient of days sat: his clothing was white as snow, and the hair of his head like pure wool; his throne was fiery flames, [and] its wheels burning fire.
      10 A fiery stream issued and came forth from before him: thousands of thousands ministered to him, and ten thousand times ten thousand stood before him: the judgment was set, and the books were opened.
      11 I saw at that time because of the voice of the great words which the horn spoke; I saw even until the animal was slain, and its body destroyed, and it was given to be burned with fire.
      12 As for the rest of the animals, their dominion was taken away: yet their lives were prolonged for a season and a time.
      13 I saw in the night visions, and behold, there came with the clouds of the sky one like a son of man, and he came even to the ancient of days, and they brought him near before him.
      14 There was given him dominion, and glory, and a kingdom, that all the peoples, nations, and languages should serve him: his dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and his kingdom that which shall not be destroyed.
      15 As for me, Daniel, my spirit was grieved in the midst of my body, and the visions of my head troubled me.
      16 I came near to one of those who stood by, and asked him the truth concerning all this. So he told me, and made me know the interpretation of the things.
      17 These great animals, which are four, are four kings, who shall arise out of the earth.
      18 But the saints of the Most High shall receive the kingdom, and possess the kingdom forever, even forever and ever.
      19 Then I desired to know the truth concerning the fourth animal, which was diverse from all of them, exceedingly terrible, whose teeth were of iron, and its nails of brass; which devoured, broke in pieces, and stamped the residue with its feet;
      20 and concerning the ten horns that were on its head, and the other [horn] which came up, and before which three fell, even that horn that had eyes, and a mouth that spoke great things, whose look was more stout than its fellows.
      21 I saw, and the same horn made war with the saints, and prevailed against them;
      22 until the ancient of days came, and judgment was given to the saints of the Most High, and the time came that the saints possessed the kingdom.
      23 Thus he said, The fourth animal shall be a fourth kingdom on earth, which shall be diverse from all the kingdoms, and shall devour the whole earth, and shall tread it down, and break it in pieces.
      24 As for the ten horns, out of this kingdom shall ten kings arise: and another shall arise after them; and he shall be diverse from the former, and he shall put down three kings.
      25 He shall speak words against the Most High, and shall wear out the saints of the Most High; and he shall think to change the times and the law; and they shall be given into his hand until a time and times and half a time.
      26 But the judgment shall be set, and they shall take away his dominion, to consume and to destroy it to the end.
      27 The kingdom and the dominion, and the greatness of the kingdoms under the whole sky, shall be given to the people of the saints of the Most High: his kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and all dominions shall serve and obey him.
      28 Here is the end of the matter. As for me, Daniel, my thoughts much troubled me, and my face was changed in me: but I kept the matter in my heart.

      Daniel 12

      1 "At that time shall Michael stand up, the great prince who stands for the children of your people; and there shall be a time of trouble, such as never was since there was a nation even to that same time: and at that time your people shall be delivered, everyone who shall be found written in the book.
      2 Many of those who sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt.
      3 Those who are wise shall shine as the brightness of the expanse; and those who turn many to righteousness as the stars forever and ever.
      4 But you, Daniel, shut up the words, and seal the book, even to the time of the end: many shall run back and forth, and knowledge shall be increased."
      5 Then I, Daniel, looked, and behold, two others stood, one on the river bank on this side, and the other on the river bank on that side.
      6 One said to the man clothed in linen, who was above the waters of the river, How long shall it be to the end of these wonders?
      7 I heard the man clothed in linen, who was above the waters of the river, when he held up his right hand and his left hand to heaven, and swore by him who lives forever that it shall be for a time, times, and a half; and when they have made an end of breaking in pieces the power of the holy people, all these things shall be finished.
      8 I heard, but I didn't understand: then I said, my lord, what shall be the issue of these things?
      9 He said, Go your way, Daniel; for the words are shut up and sealed until the time of the end.
      10 Many shall purify themselves, and make themselves white, and be refined; but the wicked shall do wickedly; and none of the wicked shall understand; but those who are wise shall understand.
      11 From the time that the continual burnt offering shall be taken away, and the abomination that makes desolate set up, there shall be one thousand two hundred ninety days.
      12 Blessed is he who waits, and comes to the one thousand three hundred thirty-five days.
      13 But go you your way until the end; for you shall rest, and shall stand in your lot, at the end of the days.

      4 "I will heal their waywardness. I will love them freely; for my anger is turned away from him.
      8 Ephraim, what have I to do any more with idols? I answer, and will take care of him. I am like a green fir tree; from me your fruit is found."

      1 Blow the trumpet in Zion, and sound an alarm in my holy mountain! Let all the inhabitants of the land tremble, for the day of Yahweh comes, for it is close at hand:
      2 A day of darkness and gloominess, a day of clouds and thick darkness. As the dawn spreading on the mountains, a great and strong people; there has never been the like, neither will there be any more after them, even to the years of many generations.
      3 A fire devours before them, and behind them, a flame burns. The land is as the garden of Eden before them, and behind them, a desolate wilderness. Yes, and no one has escaped them.
      4 Their appearance is as the appearance of horses, and as horsemen, so do they run.
      5 Like the noise of chariots on the tops of the mountains do they leap, like the noise of a flame of fire that devours the stubble, as a strong people set in battle array.
      6 At their presence the peoples are in anguish. All faces have grown pale.
      7 They run like mighty men. They climb the wall like warriors. They each march in his line, and they don't swerve off course.
      8 Neither does one jostle another; they march everyone in his path, and they burst through the defenses, and don't break ranks.
      9 They rush on the city. They run on the wall. They climb up into the houses. They enter in at the windows like thieves.
      10 The earth quakes before them. The heavens tremble. The sun and the moon are darkened, and the stars withdraw their shining.
      11 Yahweh thunders his voice before his army; for his forces are very great; for he is strong who obeys his command; for the day of Yahweh is great and very awesome, and who can endure it?
      12 "Yet even now," says Yahweh, "turn to me with all your heart, and with fasting, and with weeping, and with mourning."
      13 Tear your heart, and not your garments, and turn to Yahweh, your God; for he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and abundant in loving kindness, and relents from sending calamity.
      14 Who knows? He may turn and relent, and leave a blessing behind him, even a meal offering and a drink offering to Yahweh, your God.
      15 Blow the trumpet in Zion! Sanctify a fast. Call a solemn assembly.
      16 Gather the people. Sanctify the assembly. Assemble the elders. Gather the children, and those who nurse from breasts. Let the bridegroom go forth from his room, and the bride out of her room.
      17 Let the priests, the ministers of Yahweh, weep between the porch and the altar, and let them say, "Spare your people, Yahweh, and don't give your heritage to reproach, that the nations should rule over them. Why should they say among the peoples, 'Where is their God?'"
      18 Then Yahweh was jealous for his land, And had pity on his people.
      19 Yahweh answered his people, "Behold, I will send you grain, new wine, and oil, and you will be satisfied with them; and I will no more make you a reproach among the nations.
      20 But I will remove the northern army far away from you, and will drive it into a barren and desolate land, its front into the eastern sea, and its back into the western sea; and its stench will come up, and its bad smell will rise." Surely he has done great things.
      21 Land, don't be afraid. Be glad and rejoice, for Yahweh has done great things.
      22 Don't be afraid, you animals of the field; for the pastures of the wilderness spring up, for the tree bears its fruit. The fig tree and the vine yield their strength.
      23 "Be glad then, you children of Zion, and rejoice in Yahweh, your God; for he gives you the former rain in just measure, and he causes the rain to come down for you, the former rain and the latter rain, as before.
      24 The threshing floors will be full of wheat, and the vats will overflow with new wine and oil.
      25 I will restore to you the years that the swarming locust has eaten, the great locust, the grasshopper, and the caterpillar, my great army, which I sent among you.
      26 You will have plenty to eat, and be satisfied, and will praise the name of Yahweh, your God, who has dealt wondrously with you; and my people will never again be disappointed.
      27 You will know that I am in the midst of Israel, and that I am Yahweh, your God, and there is no one else; and my people will never again be disappointed.
      28 "It will happen afterward, that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh; and your sons and your daughters will prophesy. Your old men will dream dreams. Your young men will see visions.
      29 And also on the servants and on the handmaids in those days, I will pour out my Spirit.
      30 I will show wonders in the heavens and in the earth: blood, fire, and pillars of smoke.
      31 The sun will be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and terrible day of Yahweh comes.
      32 It will happen that whoever will call on the name of Yahweh shall be saved; for in Mount Zion and in Jerusalem there will be those who escape, as Yahweh has said, and among the remnant, those whom Yahweh calls.

      8 He has shown you, O man, what is good. What does Yahweh require of you, but to act justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God?

      28 but I tell you that everyone who gazes at a woman to lust after her has committed adultery with her already in his heart.
      29 If your right eye causes you to stumble, pluck it out and throw it away from you. For it is more profitable for you that one of your members should perish, than for your whole body to be cast into Gehenna.

      42 Give to him who asks you, and don't turn away him who desires to borrow from you.
      43 "You have heard that it was said, 'You shall love your neighbor, and hate your enemy. '

      45 that you may be children of your Father who is in heaven. For he makes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the just and the unjust.
      46 For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Don't even the tax collectors do the same?
      47 If you only greet your friends, what more do you do than others? Don't even the tax collectors do the same?
      48 Therefore you shall be perfect, just as your Father in heaven is perfect.

      Matthieu 6

      1 "Be careful that you don't do your charitable giving before men, to be seen by them, or else you have no reward from your Father who is in heaven.
      2 Therefore when you do merciful deeds, don't sound a trumpet before yourself, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may get glory from men. Most certainly I tell you, they have received their reward.
      3 But when you do merciful deeds, don't let your left hand know what your right hand does,
      4 so that your merciful deeds may be in secret, then your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly.

      6 But you, when you pray, enter into your inner room, and having shut your door, pray to your Father who is in secret, and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly.
      7 In praying, don't use vain repetitions, as the Gentiles do; for they think that they will be heard for their much speaking.
      8 Therefore don't be like them, for your Father knows what things you need, before you ask him.
      9 Pray like this: 'Our Father in heaven, may your name be kept holy.
      10 Let your Kingdom come. Let your will be done, as in heaven, so on earth.
      11 Give us today our daily bread.
      12 Forgive us our debts, as we also forgive our debtors.
      13 Bring us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one. For yours is the Kingdom, the power, and the glory forever. Amen. '
      14 "For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you.
      15 But if you don't forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.
      16 "Moreover when you fast, don't be like the hypocrites, with sad faces. For they disfigure their faces, that they may be seen by men to be fasting. Most certainly I tell you, they have received their reward.
      17 But you, when you fast, anoint your head, and wash your face;
      18 so that you are not seen by men to be fasting, but by your Father who is in secret, and your Father, who sees in secret, will reward you.
      19 "Don't lay up treasures for yourselves on the earth, where moth and rust consume, and where thieves break through and steal;
      20 but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust consume, and where thieves don't break through and steal;
      21 for where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
      22 "The lamp of the body is the eye. If therefore your eye is sound, your whole body will be full of light.
      23 But if your eye is evil, your whole body will be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in you is darkness, how great is the darkness!
      24 "No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other; or else he will be devoted to one and despise the other. You can't serve both God and Mammon.
      25 Therefore I tell you, don't be anxious for your life: what you will eat, or what you will drink; nor yet for your body, what you will wear. Isn't life more than food, and the body more than clothing?
      26 See the birds of the sky, that they don't sow, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns. Your heavenly Father feeds them. Aren't you of much more value than they?
      27 "Which of you, by being anxious, can add one moment to his lifespan?
      28 Why are you anxious about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow. They don't toil, neither do they spin,
      29 yet I tell you that even Solomon in all his glory was not dressed like one of these.
      30 But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today exists, and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, won't he much more clothe you, you of little faith?
      31 "Therefore don't be anxious, saying, 'What will we eat?', 'What will we drink?' or, 'With what will we be clothed?'
      32 For the Gentiles seek after all these things; for your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things.
      33 But seek first God's Kingdom, and his righteousness; and all these things will be given to you as well.
      34 Therefore don't be anxious for tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Each day's own evil is sufficient.

      1 It happened that when Jesus had finished directing his twelve disciples, he departed from there to teach and preach in their cities.

      8 But what did you go out to see? A man in soft clothing? Behold, those who wear soft clothing are in king's houses.
      9 But why did you go out? To see a prophet? Yes, I tell you, and much more than a prophet.
      10 For this is he, of whom it is written, 'Behold, I send my messenger before your face, who will prepare your way before you.'
      11 Most certainly I tell you, among those who are born of women there has not arisen anyone greater than John the Baptizer; yet he who is least in the Kingdom of Heaven is greater than he.
      12 From the days of John the Baptizer until now, the Kingdom of Heaven suffers violence, and the violent take it by force.
      13 For all the prophets and the law prophesied until John.
      14 If you are willing to receive it, this is Elijah, who is to come.
      15 He who has ears to hear, let him hear.
      16 "But to what shall I compare this generation? It is like children sitting in the marketplaces, who call to their companions
      17 and say, 'We played the flute for you, and you didn't dance. We mourned for you, and you didn't lament.'
      18 For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, 'He has a demon.'
      19 The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, 'Behold, a gluttonous man and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!' But wisdom is justified by her children. "
      20 Then he began to denounce the cities in which most of his mighty works had been done, because they didn't repent.
      21 "Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the mighty works had been done in Tyre and Sidon which were done in you, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes.
      22 But I tell you, it will be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon on the day of judgment than for you.
      23 You, Capernaum, who are exalted to heaven, you will go down to Hades. For if the mighty works had been done in Sodom which were done in you, it would have remained until this day.
      24 But I tell you that it will be more tolerable for the land of Sodom, on the day of judgment, than for you."
      25 At that time, Jesus answered, "I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that you hid these things from the wise and understanding, and revealed them to infants.
      26 Yes, Father, for so it was well-pleasing in your sight.
      27 All things have been delivered to me by my Father. No one knows the Son, except the Father; neither does anyone know the Father, except the Son, and he to whom the Son desires to reveal him.
      28 "Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.
      29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart; and you will find rest for your souls.
      30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light."

      30 She went away to her house, and found the child having been laid on the bed, with the demon gone out.
      31 Again he departed from the borders of Tyre and Sidon, and came to the sea of Galilee, through the midst of the region of Decapolis.

      25 They asked him, "Why then do you baptize, if you are not the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the prophet?"
      26 John answered them, "I baptize in water, but among you stands one whom you don't know.
      27 He is the one who comes after me, who is preferred before me, whose sandal strap I'm not worthy to loosen."
      28 These things were done in Bethany beyond the Jordan, where John was baptizing.
      29 The next day, he saw Jesus coming to him, and said, "Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!
      30 This is he of whom I said, 'After me comes a man who is preferred before me, for he was before me.'
      31 I didn't know him, but for this reason I came baptizing in water: that he would be revealed to Israel."
      32 John testified, saying, "I have seen the Spirit descending like a dove out of heaven, and it remained on him.
      33 I didn't recognize him, but he who sent me to baptize in water, he said to me, 'On whomever you will see the Spirit descending, and remaining on him, the same is he who baptizes in the Holy Spirit.'

      36 and he looked at Jesus as he walked, and said, "Behold, the Lamb of God!"
      37 The two disciples heard him speak, and they followed Jesus.
      38 Jesus turned, and saw them following, and said to them, "What are you looking for?" They said to him, "Rabbi" (which is to say, being interpreted, Teacher), "where are you staying?"
      39 He said to them, "Come, and see." They came and saw where he was staying, and they stayed with him that day. It was about the tenth hour.
      40 One of the two who heard John, and followed him, was Andrew, Simon Peter's brother.
      41 He first found his own brother, Simon, and said to him, "We have found the Messiah!" (which is, being interpreted, Christ ).
      42 He brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him, and said, "You are Simon the son of Jonah. You shall be called Cephas" (which is by interpretation, Peter).
      43 On the next day, he was determined to go out into Galilee, and he found Philip. Jesus said to him, "Follow me."
      44 Now Philip was from Bethsaida, of the city of Andrew and Peter.
      45 Philip found Nathanael, and said to him, "We have found him, of whom Moses in the law, and the prophets, wrote: Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph."
      46 Nathanael said to him, "Can any good thing come out of Nazareth?" Philip said to him, "Come and see."
      47 Jesus saw Nathanael coming to him, and said about him, "Behold, an Israelite indeed, in whom is no deceit!"
