1. Pouvoir de commander ou d'agir, force effective. A Dieu appartient la suprême puissance : (Mt 6:13) elle apparaît dans la nature (Jer 32:17, Ro 1:20), dans l'histoire (Ex 14:31, Ps 79:11), dans l'individu (Ex 9:16, Ps 54:3, Eph 3:20). Surtout Dieu l'exerce en Jésus-Christ (Lu 5:17,1Co 1:24), notamment à travers son message (Ro 1:16), par sa croix (1Co 1:18). A son tour, Jésus confirme son autorité de droit par sa puissance effective (Mr 2:10 et suivant, Lu 4:36 6:19 8:46).

Le Christ glorifié dirige l'Église avec puissance (1Co 5:3 et suivant, Col 1:29) ; son retour en sera la manifestation éclatante (Mt 24:30). Le diable aussi possède une grande autorité, appuyée sur une puissance réelle (Ap 13:2) ; pourtant le pouvoir que le Christ possède et délègue à ses disciples lui est supérieur (Lu 10:19). Appliqué à l'homme, le mot de puissance désigne ses multiples possibilités : capacités (Mt 25:15), faculté d'agir (Pr 3:27, Ac 3:12), force de résistance (2Co 1:8), force de persuasion (Ac 4:33). Forces encore bien misérables en comparaison de celles que la résurrection en Christ assurera au croyant (1Co 15:43)

2. La Bible appelle aussi puissance l'énergie interne, la force d'expansion de certaines réalités morales telles que la loi, le péché (1Co 15:56), le Saint-Esprit (Lu 4:14, Ac 1:8), la piété (2Ti 3:5).

3. Par extension, les êtres doués de puissance sont appelés eux-mêmes des Puissances : Dieu (Mt 26:64), les anges (Eph 1:21,1Pi 3:22), les démons (1Co 15:24 et suivant).

4. Enfin la Bible étend parfois l'emploi du mot puissance aux actes qui en sont la manifestation. Ce que nous appelons des miracles (voir ce mot) est souvent nommé en grec dunameïs =des puissances, des actes de puissance. --Voir (Mt 11:20, Mr 6:2,5, Lu 19:37, Ac 8:13 etc.) Autorité, Domination.
