SECOURS

C'est le bienfait que, dans le sentiment de sa faiblesse et de ses limites, l'homme attend de la divinité : un secours d'ordre plus ou moins matériel ou de nature plus ou moins spirituelle suivant son développement religieux (voir Prière). Le Dieu de la Bible assure son secours à ses fidèles. C'est un des thèmes les plus familiers aux psalmistes (voir art., 5°) : Jéhovah, dans sa bonté (sa khésed : voir Hasidéens, 2), intervient en leur faveur (Ps 54:6 86:17 118:13 etc.) ; ses interventions sont sollicitées (Ps 30:11 79:9 109:26 etc.) et célébrées (Ps 37:40 etc.) par diverses expressions synonymes dont la variété atteste la richesse de l'expérience des croyants : secours, aide, délivrance, salut, refuge, retraite, etc. (voir Asile) ; comp, le refrain : « Il est notre aide et notre bouclier » (Ps 33:20 115:9,11, cf. De 33:29).

Il faut noter à cet égard la vigueur du Ps 46 (verset 2, etc.), qui a inspiré le cantique de Luther, et la sérénité du Ps 121, hymne au divin Gardien qui veille :

D'où me viendra le secours ?

-Mon secours vient de l'Éternel,

Qui a fait les cieux et la terre, (verset 1-2).

Des invocations et des déclarations analogues se retrouvent chez les poètes (Ge 49:18, Job 22:29) et les prophètes (Os 13:9, La 3:26, Esa 41:10-14 49:8). (cf. 2Co 6:2) La devise de Samuel, avec Eben-Hézer, pierre du secours : « Jusqu'ici l'Éternel nous a secourus » (1Sa 7:12), est reprise à l'entrée de l'Évangile par le Magnificat de Marie (Lu 1:54), et vers la fin de sa carrière missionnaire par l'apôtre Paul (Ac 26:22, V S. : protection). Prisonnier, celui-ci compte sur le secours de l'Esprit de Jésus-Christ (Php 1:19), et son disciple anonyme garantit le secours compatissant et opportun de leur Sauveur aux pécheurs faibles et tentés que sont les chrétiens (Heb 2:18 4:16). Remarquer encore deux touchants appels au secours : auprès de Jésus pour une guérison (Mt 15:25), auprès de son apôtre pour l'évangélisation (appel du Macédonien, Ac 16:9).
