SIHON

Roi amoréen ; son royaume s'étendait entre l'Arnon et le Jabbok (No 21:24, Jug 11:21 Jos 12:2, Ne 9:22). Il est aussi appelé le roi de Hesbon (De 2:30 3:6 29:7) ; cette ville était sa capitale. Dans No 21:28 et Jer 48:45, Sihon est employé comme nom de lieu, parallèle au nom de Hesbon.

Le roi Sihon refusa aux Israélites l'autorisation de traverser son territoire, et fut défait et tué à Jahats (No 21:21-24, De 2:26-36, Jug 11:19-22) ; son pays fut attribué à Ruben, Gad et Manassé (No 32:33, De 29:7 et suivant, Jos 13:10 21,27). Sa défaite est fréquemment rappelée dans l'A. T (De 1:4 3:2 4:46,47 31:4, Jos 2:10 9:10 12:2,1Ro 4:19, Ne 9:22, Ps 135:11 136:19). D'après No 21:26, Sihon aurait conquis son royaume sur Moab, fait commémoré par une ancienne poésie (No 21:27,30).

      21 Israel sent messengers to Sihon king of the Amorites, saying,
      22 "Let me pass through your land: we will not turn aside into field, or into vineyard; we will not drink of the water of the wells: we will go by the king's highway, until we have passed your border."
      23 Sihon would not allow Israel to pass through his border: but Sihon gathered all his people together, and went out against Israel into the wilderness, and came to Jahaz; and he fought against Israel.
      24 Israel struck him with the edge of the sword, and possessed his land from the Arnon to the Jabbok, even to the children of Ammon; for the border of the children of Ammon was strong.
      26 For Heshbon was the city of Sihon the king of the Amorites, who had fought against the former king of Moab, and taken all his land out of his hand, even to the Arnon.
      27 Therefore those who speak in proverbs say, "Come to Heshbon. Let the city of Sihon be built and established;
      28 for a fire has gone out of Heshbon, a flame from the city of Sihon. It has devoured Ar of Moab, The lords of the high places of the Arnon.
      30 We have shot at them. Heshbon has perished even to Dibon. We have laid waste even to Nophah, Which reaches to Medeba."

      1 Now these are the kings of the land, whom the children of Israel struck, and possessed their land beyond the Jordan toward the sunrise, from the valley of the Arnon to Mount Hermon, and all the Arabah eastward:
      2 Sihon king of the Amorites, who lived in Heshbon, and ruled from Aroer, which is on the edge of the valley of the Arnon, and the middle of the valley, and half Gilead, even to the river Jabbok, the border of the children of Ammon;

      Josué 13

      10 and all the cities of Sihon king of the Amorites, who reigned in Heshbon, to the border of the children of Ammon;
      21 all the cities of the plain, and all the kingdom of Sihon king of the Amorites, who reigned in Heshbon, whom Moses struck with the chiefs of Midian, Evi, Rekem, Zur, Hur, and Reba, the princes of Sihon, who lived in the land.
      27 and in the valley, Beth Haram, Beth Nimrah, Succoth, and Zaphon, the rest of the kingdom of Sihon king of Heshbon, the Jordan's bank, to the uttermost part of the sea of Chinnereth beyond the Jordan eastward.

      Juges 11

      19 Israel sent messengers to Sihon king of the Amorites, the king of Heshbon; and Israel said to him, 'Please let us pass through your land to my place.'
      20 But Sihon didn't trust Israel to pass through his border; but Sihon gathered all his people together, and encamped in Jahaz, and fought against Israel.
      21 Yahweh, the God of Israel, delivered Sihon and all his people into the hand of Israel, and they struck them: so Israel possessed all the land of the Amorites, the inhabitants of that country.
      22 They possessed all the border of the Amorites, from the Arnon even to the Jabbok, and from the wilderness even to the Jordan.

      Néhémie 9
