UNIQUE

Les fils ou filles uniques étaient rares en Israël ; (cf. Ge 22:2, Jug 11:34, Jer 6:26, Za 12:10, Pr 4:3, Tob 3:15) l'idéal y était la famille nombreuse (voir Enfant).

Le terme grec du N.T. monogénès (de monos-- un seul, et génos-- race), qui n'est appliqué à des fils ou filles uniques que par Luc (Lu 7:12 8:42 9:38), et une fois par l'épître aux Hébreux à propos d'Isaac (Heb 11:17), désigne toujours dans les écrits johanniques le Fils unique de Dieu (Jn 1:14,18 3:16,18,1Jn 4:9).

Les premiers auteurs chrétiens latins traduisirent simplement par unicus ; plus tard, à la suite des grandes discussions de doctrine sur la nature du Fils et celle du Père, notamment au III° siècle avec l'arianisme, on se mit à traduire monogénès par le latin unigenitus (de unus =un seul, et genitus =engendré), qui, sous couleur de se calquer sur l'adjectif grec correspondant, insistait plus que lui sur la notion d'engendrement. C'est lui que nous trouvons dans la Vulg, aux cinq passages johanniques précités, alors que l'épithète ordinaire unicus y est presque toujours conservée pour les fils ou filles uniques ordinaires.

Employé au XVIII° siècle comme premier mot d'une bulle papale, l'adjectif de la Vulgate devint ainsi le titre de la fameuse bulle ou constitution Unigenitus, de Clément XII, qui condamna le jansénisme (1713).
