Effet plusieurs fois mentionné (Pr 25:16, Esa 19:14 28:8, Jer 25:27, Sir 31:20, cf. Job 20:15) des excès de table et en particulier de l'ivresse (voir ce mot).

Au figuré, c'est le rejet du dégoût (Le 18:25-28) ; pour le texte d'Ap 3:16, voir Tiède. Dans 2Pi 2:22 est cité un proverbe dont la première partie se trouve déjà dans Pr 26:11.
