Sur la terre, comme si c'était là le tout de l'homme. Comparer Luc 16.19.

Vous avez rassasié vos cœurs, et par là même vous les avez appesantis et rendus incapables de vigilance. (Comparer Luc 21.34)

Le jour du jugement est appelé un jour de tuerie comme Jérémie 12.3.

D'autres interprètes, suivant le texte reçu, ont traduit : "Comme en un jour de sacrifice." (Calvin, Bèze et nos anciennes versions.) Ils pensent aux festins qui avaient lieu après les sacrifices. Mais le mot grec ne signifie pas simplement sacrifice, mais bien tuerie, l'action d'égorger des animaux.

On a pensé que par l'emploi de ce terme l'auteur voulait dire que les riches étaient semblables à des bestiaux qui mangent avidement le jour même où lis vont être immolés. Il n'est cependant pas probable que cette comparaison brutale tût dans l'intention de l'auteur, car le terme de jour du carnage est emprunté au langage des prophètes.
