Philippiens 1.20

Dans mon corps signifie : par toute ma vie sur la terre, soit que cette vie se prolonge et que je serve encore mon Maître, soit qu'elle doive bientôt aboutir à la mort.

Dans l'un ou l'autre cas, Christ sera magnifié. En effet, glorifier son Sauveur, voilà la seule pensée de l'apôtre, celle qu'il oppose à être confus.

De quelque manière que cette glorification de Christ ait lieu par lui, quoi qu'il puisse lui en coûter, peu importe ! (verset 22) Celui qui, comme Paul, s'est offert à Dieu en sacrifice vivant et saint, (Romains 12.1) n'a plus à choisir de quelle manière il glorifiera Dieu ; ce n'est pas son affaire.

- Si l'apôtre n'a qu'une pensée, qu'un désir, qu'un but, au moins a-t-il une bien ferme assurance de l'atteindre ; il n'accumule pas moins de trois termes, les plus forts, les plus énergiques, pour exprimer cette assurance qui le console de tout : ferme attente, espérance, toute assurance.

Le verset suivant dit clairement la raison profonde et inébranlable de cette certitude.
