Ces paroles, aussi bien que celles de verset 9, se rattachent étroitement à verset 8.

L'apôtre expose (versets 9-11) ce que c'est que "gagner Christ." C'est d'abord posséder sa justice ; (verset 9) le connaître, lui ; connaîtrai la puissance de sa résurrection, la communion de ses souffrances et de sa mort ; (verset 10) c'est enfin parvenir par lui à la résurrection des morts : vérités profondes qu'on doit sonder par la méditation, et dont il faut faire l'expérience pour les comprendre.

- Le connaître ce n'est point posséder une simple notion historique et intellectuelle de Christ, mais c'est l'avoir embrassé par une foi vivante, être entré dans une communion intime avec lui. (Comparer Jean 10.14 ; 17.3)

- La puissance de sa résurrection n'est pas seulement cette force divine qui a ramené le Sauveur d'entre les morts, l'a élevé à la droite de la majesté de Dieu, et qu'il déploie pour appliquer à tous ses rachetés les fruits de sa rédemption (Calvin et d'autres) ; ni seulement l'assurance de notre propre résurrection fondée sur la sienne, la victoire sur la mort ; mais encore cette efficace de vie divine par laquelle le Seigneur ressuscité, en s'unissant à ses membres qui sont sur la terre, fait mourir en eux le vieil homme, ressuscite lui-même en eux, y reproduit son image, sa vie, jusqu'au moment où ils seront consommés en lui et élevés dans sa gloire. Les derniers mots de cette phrase expliquent les premiers. La communion des souffrances de Christ n'est point seulement une appropriation personnelle de ses souffrances par la foi en lui ; c'est une expérience réelle de ses souffrances, par laquelle chacun de ses membres ici-bas devient conforme à sa mort, c'est-à-dire meurt avec lui, condition indispensable pour avoir part à la "puissance de sa résurrection ;" ou plutôt c'est là une seule et même œuvre de la grâce en nous, envisagée par son côté négatif, la mort, et par son côté positif, la vie.

L'état du chrétien sur la terre est un état de souffrance, au dedans et au dehors. Il porte en tout lieu la douleur du péché ; il souffre de ses propres misères et de celles des autres ; il lutte, il succombe comme son Sauveur ; pour lui aussi la croix est l'unique moyen de la victoire. Ces souffrances sont celles de Christ même ; il les endure avec ses membres ; c'est le même combat, la même cause, la même force, le même but, la même couronne acquise par Christ et réservée aux siens.
