La pensée que le Seigneur est proche, que bientôt il va paraître, (Apocalypse 1.3 ; 22.10) est infiniment propre à inspirer au chrétien cette douceur que l'apôtre recommande à l'égard de tous les hommes, même de ceux qui le haïssent et le persécutent.

- Quelques interprètes, Calvin entre autres, mais à tort, entendent ces mots : le Seigneur est proche, de la toute présence de Dieu, qui sonde les cœurs. D'autres, tout en les appliquant à la venue du Christ, les lient au verset suivant et en font un argument contre les inquiétudes. La première interprétation nous paraît la plus conforme à la pensée de l'apôtre.
