      18 Voici dans quelles circonstances Jésus-Christ vint au monde : Marie, sa mère, étant fiancée à Joseph, se trouva enceinte par la puissance du Saint-Esprit, avant qu’ils n’aient eu de relations conjugales.
      19 Joseph, son futur mari, était un homme bon et droit. Il ne voulut pas lui faire un affront public et l’exposer à perdre son bon renom. C’est pourquoi il se proposa de rompre discrètement avec elle sans en divulguer la raison.
      20 Pendant qu’il pesait le pour et le contre de cette éventualité, un ange du Seigneur lui apparut en rêve et lui dit : — Joseph, fils de David, n’hésite pas à accueillir chez toi Marie comme ta femme, car l’enfant qu’elle porte en elle vient de l’Esprit saint.
      21 Elle donnera naissance à un fils, tu l’appelleras Jésus (c’est-à-dire Sauveur). C’est lui, en effet, qui sauvera son peuple de ses péchés.
      22 Tout cela arriva pour accomplir la prédiction que le Seigneur avait inspirée au prophète :
      23 Voici, la jeune fille vierge deviendra mère. Elle donnera le jour à un fils que l’on appellera Emmanuel, ce qui veut dire « Dieu est avec nous ».
      24 À son réveil, Joseph fit ce que l’ange du Seigneur lui avait commandé : il reçut chez lui sa fiancée et la prit pour femme.
      25 Mais il n’eut pas de relations conjugales avec elle avant qu’elle ait mis au monde un fils, auquel il donna le nom de Jésus.

      Matthieu 2

      1 Jésus naquit à Bethléhem en Judée, sous le règne du roi Hérode. Quelque temps après sa naissance, on vit arriver à Jérusalem des mages originaires de l’Orient.
      2 Ils s’enquéraient partout : — Où est le roi des Juifs qui vient de naître ? Dans le ciel d’Orient, nous avons vu apparaître son étoile et nous sommes accourus pour lui rendre hommage.
      3 Quand le roi Hérode apprit la nouvelle, il en fut très troublé et, avec lui, tous ceux qui habitaient Jérusalem.
      4 Il convoqua tous les chefs des prêtres et les interprètes de la loi que comptait son peuple et il leur demanda où devait naître le Messie promis. —
      5 À Bethléhem en Judée, lui répondirent-ils. Voici, en effet, ce qui a été écrit par le prophète :
      6 Et toi, Bethléhem, village de la terre de Judée, tu n’es certainement pas la cité la plus insignifiante aux yeux des princes de Juda, puisque c’est de toi que sortira le chef qui gouvernera Israël mon peuple.
      7 Là-dessus, Hérode fit appeler secrètement les mages et leur demanda de préciser le moment où l’étoile leur était apparue.
      8 Puis il les envoya à Bethléhem en disant : — Allez là-bas, renseignez-vous avec précision sur cet enfant, et dès que vous l’aurez découvert, venez me le faire savoir, pour que j’aille, moi aussi, me prosterner devant lui et lui rendre hommage.
      9 Quand le roi leur eut donné ces instructions, les mages se mirent en route. Et voici que l’étoile qu’ils avaient vue en Orient se mit à les précéder jusqu’à ce qu’elle soit parvenue au-dessus de la maison où se trouvait le petit enfant. Là, elle s’arrêta, immobile.
      10 En revoyant l’étoile, les mages furent transportés de joie.
      11 Ils entrèrent dans la maison, virent l’enfant avec Marie, sa mère, et, tombant à genoux, ils se prosternèrent devant lui et l’adorèrent. Puis ils ouvrirent leurs coffrets et lui offrirent en présents de l’or, de l’encens et de la myrrhe.
      12 La nuit suivante, Dieu les avertit par un rêve de ne pas retourner auprès d’Hérode. Ils regagnèrent donc leur pays par un autre chemin.
      13 Après leur départ, un ange du Seigneur apparut à Joseph dans un rêve et lui dit : — Lève-toi, prends l’enfant et sa mère, et partez tout de suite en Égypte. Tu y resteras jusqu’à ce que je te dise de revenir, car Hérode ne va pas tarder à faire rechercher l’enfant pour le tuer.
      14 Joseph se leva donc immédiatement et partit dans la nuit, emmenant l’enfant et sa mère pour se réfugier en Égypte.
      15 Il y resta jusqu’à la mort d’Hérode. Ainsi s’accomplit ce que le Seigneur avait dit par le prophète (Osée) en ces mots : J’ai rappelé mon fils hors d’Égypte.
      16 Quand Hérode s’aperçut que les mages avaient déjoué son plan, il devint furieux. Il fit massacrer à Bethléhem, et dans son district tout entier, tous les garçons âgés de deux ans ou moins, car, d’après les indications exactes que lui avaient fournies les mages, l’étoile était apparue durant cette période.
      17 Ainsi s’accomplit la prédiction de Jérémie, le prophète qui avait annoncé : Un cri de détresse monte de Rama,
      18 des gémissements et de longs sanglots. C’est Rachel qui pleure ses fils, car ils sont morts. Elle se refuse à toute consolation, car ils ne reviendront plus.
      19 Après la mort d’Hérode, un ange du Seigneur apparut en rêve à Joseph, en Égypte,
      20 et lui dit : — Lève-toi, prends avec toi l’enfant et sa mère et retourne avec eux dans le pays d’Israël, car ceux qui voulaient tuer l’enfant sont morts.
      21 Joseph se mit donc en route, il emmena l’enfant et sa mère et regagna la terre d’Israël.
      22 Mais lorsqu’il apprit que le fils d’Hérode Archélaüs avait succédé à son père comme roi de Judée, il eut peur de s’installer dans cette contrée. Sur des indications que Dieu lui transmit en songe, il se retira dans la province de Galilée.
      23 Il alla s’établir dans une ville appelée Nazareth. Il en fut ainsi pour que se réalise cette prédiction des prophètes : On l’appellera le Nazaréen.

      Luc 2

      1 En ce temps-là, l’empereur Auguste publia un édit par lequel il ordonna d’inscrire sur la liste (des contribuables) tous les habitants de l’Empire romain.
      2 Ce recensement, le premier du genre, fut organisé à l’époque où Quirinius était gouverneur de la province de Syrie.
      3 Tout le monde allait se faire inscrire dans la localité d’où ses ancêtres étaient originaires.
      4 C’est ainsi que Joseph, lui aussi, partit de Nazareth et monta de la Galilée vers la Judée, à Bethléhem, la ville natale de David, parce qu’il était un descendant direct de David.
      5 Il allait se faire inscrire avec Marie, sa fiancée qui attendait un enfant.
      6 Or, durant leur séjour à Bethléhem, le moment de la naissance arriva.
      7 Marie mit au monde son premier-né : un fils. Elle l’emmaillota dans des langes et le coucha dans une mangeoire, parce qu’il n’y avait pas de place pour eux à l’intérieur du caravansérail.
      8 Dans les champs environnants, des bergers passaient la nuit à la belle étoile et surveillaient tour à tour leurs troupeaux.
      9 Tout à coup, ils virent apparaître devant eux un ange du Seigneur resplendissant d’une gloire divine. La peur s’empara d’eux.
      10 Mais l’ange les rassura : — N’ayez pas peur, car je viens vous annoncer une heureuse nouvelle qui sera, pour tout le peuple (de Dieu), un très grand sujet de joie :
      11 cette nuit même, dans la ville de David, est né votre Sauveur, celui qui vous délivrera. C’est le Messie, le Seigneur.
      12 Et voici comment vous le reconnaîtrez : vous trouverez (dans le village) un nouveau-né enveloppé de langes et couché dans une mangeoire.
      13 Et tout à coup, apparut aux côtés de l’ange une multitude d’anges de l’armée céleste qui chantaient les louanges de Dieu : —
      14 Gloire à Dieu au plus haut des cieux ! Paix sur la terre aux hommes qu’il aime !
      15 Quand les anges les eurent quittés pour retourner au ciel, les bergers se dirent l’un à l’autre : — Allons à Bethléhem pour voir ce qui est arrivé et que le Seigneur nous a fait connaître.
      16 Ils se dépêchèrent donc d’y aller et, après avoir cherché, ils découvrirent Marie et Joseph avec le nouveau-né couché dans une mangeoire.
      17 Quand ils le virent, ils racontèrent ce qui leur avait été dit au sujet de cet enfant.
      18 Tous ceux qui les entendaient étaient émerveillés du récit des bergers.
      19 Marie conservait précieusement, dans sa mémoire, le souvenir de ces événements et y repensait souvent.
      20 Les bergers s’en retournèrent en chantant la gloire et les louanges de Dieu, car tout ce qu’ils avaient vu et entendu correspondait parfaitement à ce que l’ange leur avait annoncé.
      21 Huit jours plus tard, l’enfant devait être circoncis. On lui donna le nom de Jésus, nom que l’ange avait indiqué avant qu’il n’ait été conçu.
      22 La loi de Moïse ordonne (que la mère vive retirée durant quarante jours après l’accouchement). Quand ce temps fut passé, les parents se rendirent à Jérusalem pour accomplir (en faveur de la mère) la cérémonie dite « de purification », et pour présenter l’enfant au Seigneur afin de le lui consacrer.
      23 En effet, il est écrit dans la loi divine : Tout garçon premier-né sera consacré au Seigneur.
      24 Ils venaient aussi offrir le sacrifice prescrit par la loi de Dieu : une paire de tourterelles ou deux jeunes pigeons.
      25 Il y avait alors, à Jérusalem, un homme appelé Siméon. C’était un homme droit, d’une piété profonde et sincère. Le Saint-Esprit reposait sur lui, et il vivait dans l’attente de celui qui devait sauver Israël.
      26 En effet, l’Esprit saint lui avait révélé qu’il ne mourrait pas avant d’avoir vu le Messie, l’envoyé du Seigneur.
      27 Poussé par l’Esprit, il vint donc au temple au moment où les parents de Jésus apportaient le petit enfant pour accomplir, à son sujet, les rites habituels ordonnés par la loi.
      28 Siméon le prit dans ses bras et loua Dieu en disant :
      29 Maintenant, Seigneur et Maître, tu peux rappeler ton serviteur. Je m’en vais en paix : tu as tenu ta promesse,
      30 car j’ai vu, de mes yeux, le Sauveur qui vient de toi,
      31 et que tu destines à tous les peuples.
      32 Il sera la lumière qui éclairera les nations et la gloire d’Israël, ton peuple.
      33 Le père et la mère de Jésus étaient émerveillés par ce qu’il disait de lui.
      34 Siméon les bénit et dit à Marie, sa mère : — Rappelle-toi que cet enfant est destiné à être, pour beaucoup de gens en Israël, une occasion de chute ou de relèvement. Il sera un sujet de contestation. Il provoquera la contradiction.
      35 Mais de cette manière, les pensées cachées et les mobiles profonds de bien des gens seront dévoilés. Quant à toi, Marie, tu le ressentiras comme si une épée te transperçait le cœur.
      36 Il y avait aussi une prophétesse, Anne, fille de Phanuel, de la tribu d’Aser. Elle était très âgée. Dans sa jeunesse, elle avait été mariée durant sept années,
      37 puis elle était devenue veuve et avait vécu seule jusqu’à quatre-vingt-quatre ans. Elle demeurait au temple qu’elle ne quittait jamais, servant Dieu nuit et jour, en jeûnant et en priant.
      38 Elle aussi survint au même moment et se mit à louer Dieu. Elle parla de l’enfant à tous ceux qui, à Jérusalem, vivaient dans l’attente du Libérateur.
      39 Après avoir accompli tout ce que la loi du Seigneur ordonnait, Marie et Joseph retournèrent en Galilée, à Nazareth, leur village.
      40 Le petit enfant grandissait et se développait. Il était très intelligent et il était évident que la faveur de Dieu reposait sur lui.

      13 Zerubbabel became the father of Abiud. Abiud became the father of Eliakim. Eliakim became the father of Azor.
      14 Azor became the father of Sadoc. Sadoc became the father of Achim. Achim became the father of Eliud.
      15 Eliud became the father of Eleazar. Eleazar became the father of Matthan. Matthan became the father of Jacob.
      16 Jacob became the father of Joseph, the husband of Mary, from whom was born Jesus , who is called Christ.
      17 So all the generations from Abraham to David are fourteen generations; from David to the exile to Babylon fourteen generations; and from the carrying away to Babylon to the Christ, fourteen generations.
      18 Now the birth of Jesus Christ was like this; for after his mother, Mary, was engaged to Joseph, before they came together, she was found pregnant by the Holy Spirit.
      19 Joseph, her husband, being a righteous man, and not willing to make her a public example, intended to put her away secretly.
      20 But when he thought about these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, "Joseph, son of David, don't be afraid to take to yourself Mary, your wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit.
      21 She shall bring forth a son. You shall call his name Jesus, for it is he who shall save his people from their sins."
      22 Now all this has happened, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying,
      23 "Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son. They shall call his name Immanuel"; which is, being interpreted, "God with us."
      24 Joseph arose from his sleep, and did as the angel of the Lord commanded him, and took his wife to himself;
      25 and didn't know her sexually until she had brought forth her firstborn son. He named him Jesus.

      Matthieu 2

      1 Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of King Herod, behold, wise men from the east came to Jerusalem, saying,
      2 "Where is he who is born King of the Jews? For we saw his star in the east, and have come to worship him."
      3 When King Herod heard it, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him.
      4 Gathering together all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he asked them where the Christ would be born.
      5 They said to him, "In Bethlehem of Judea, for this is written through the prophet,
      6 'You Bethlehem, land of Judah, are in no way least among the princes of Judah: for out of you shall come forth a governor, who shall shepherd my people, Israel.'"
      7 Then Herod secretly called the wise men, and learned from them exactly what time the star appeared.
      8 He sent them to Bethlehem, and said, "Go and search diligently for the young child. When you have found him, bring me word, so that I also may come and worship him."
      9 They, having heard the king, went their way; and behold, the star, which they saw in the east, went before them, until it came and stood over where the young child was.
      10 When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceedingly great joy.
      11 They came into the house and saw the young child with Mary, his mother, and they fell down and worshiped him. Opening their treasures, they offered to him gifts: gold, frankincense, and myrrh.
      12 Being warned in a dream that they shouldn't return to Herod, they went back to their own country another way.
      13 Now when they had departed, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream, saying, "Arise and take the young child and his mother, and flee into Egypt, and stay there until I tell you, for Herod will seek the young child to destroy him."
      14 He arose and took the young child and his mother by night, and departed into Egypt,
      15 and was there until the death of Herod; that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying, "Out of Egypt I called my son."
      16 Then Herod, when he saw that he was mocked by the wise men, was exceedingly angry, and sent out, and killed all the male children who were in Bethlehem and in all the surrounding countryside, from two years old and under, according to the exact time which he had learned from the wise men.
      17 Then that which was spoken by Jeremiah the prophet was fulfilled, saying,
      18 "A voice was heard in Ramah, lamentation, weeping and great mourning, Rachel weeping for her children; she wouldn't be comforted, because they are no more."
      19 But when Herod was dead, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt, saying,
      20 "Arise and take the young child and his mother, and go into the land of Israel, for those who sought the young child's life are dead."
      21 He arose and took the young child and his mother, and came into the land of Israel.
      22 But when he heard that Archelaus was reigning over Judea in the place of his father, Herod, he was afraid to go there. Being warned in a dream, he withdrew into the region of Galilee,
      23 and came and lived in a city called Nazareth; that it might be fulfilled which was spoken through the prophets: "He will be called a Nazarene."

      Luc 2

      1 Now it happened in those days, that a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be enrolled.
      2 This was the first enrollment made when Quirinius was governor of Syria.
      3 All went to enroll themselves, everyone to his own city.
      4 Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and family of David;
      5 to enroll himself with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him as wife, being pregnant.
      6 It happened, while they were there, that the day had come that she should give birth.
      7 She brought forth her firstborn son, and she wrapped him in bands of cloth, and laid him in a feeding trough, because there was no room for them in the inn.
      8 There were shepherds in the same country staying in the field, and keeping watch by night over their flock.
      9 Behold, an angel of the Lord stood by them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified.
      10 The angel said to them, "Don't be afraid, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy which will be to all the people.
      11 For there is born to you, this day, in the city of David, a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.
      12 This is the sign to you: you will find a baby wrapped in strips of cloth, lying in a feeding trough."
      13 Suddenly, there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly army praising God, and saying,
      14 "Glory to God in the highest, on earth peace, good will toward men."
      15 It happened, when the angels went away from them into the sky, that the shepherds said one to another, "Let's go to Bethlehem, now, and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has made known to us."
      16 They came with haste, and found both Mary and Joseph, and the baby was lying in the feeding trough.
      17 When they saw it, they publicized widely the saying which was spoken to them about this child.
      18 All who heard it wondered at the things which were spoken to them by the shepherds.
      19 But Mary kept all these sayings, pondering them in her heart.
      20 The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things that they had heard and seen, just as it was told them.
      21 When eight days were fulfilled for the circumcision of the child, his name was called Jesus, which was given by the angel before he was conceived in the womb.
      22 When the days of their purification according to the law of Moses were fulfilled, they brought him up to Jerusalem, to present him to the Lord
      23 (as it is written in the law of the Lord, "Every male who opens the womb shall be called holy to the Lord"),
      24 and to offer a sacrifice according to that which is said in the law of the Lord, "A pair of turtledoves, or two young pigeons."
      25 Behold, there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon. This man was righteous and devout, looking for the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was on him.
      26 It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he should not see death before he had seen the Lord's Christ.
      27 He came in the Spirit into the temple. When the parents brought in the child, Jesus, that they might do concerning him according to the custom of the law,
      28 then he received him into his arms, and blessed God, and said,
      29 "Now you are releasing your servant, Master, according to your word, in peace;
      30 for my eyes have seen your salvation,
      31 which you have prepared before the face of all peoples;
      32 a light for revelation to the nations, and the glory of your people Israel."
      33 Joseph and his mother were marveling at the things which were spoken concerning him,
      34 and Simeon blessed them, and said to Mary, his mother, "Behold, this child is set for the falling and the rising of many in Israel, and for a sign which is spoken against.
      35 Yes, a sword will pierce through your own soul, that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed."
      36 There was one Anna, a prophetess, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher (she was of a great age, having lived with a husband seven years from her virginity,
      37 and she had been a widow for about eighty-four years), who didn't depart from the temple, worshipping with fastings and petitions night and day.
      38 Coming up at that very hour, she gave thanks to the Lord, and spoke of him to all those who were looking for redemption in Jerusalem.
      39 When they had accomplished all things that were according to the law of the Lord, they returned into Galilee, to their own city, Nazareth.
      40 The child was growing, and was becoming strong in spirit, being filled with wisdom, and the grace of God was upon him.
