On a compris de diverses manières le rapport de cette exhortation avec celle de verset 1.

Les uns disent : c'est la sanctification de l'âme après celle du corps. Mais Paul aurait employé le terme "d'esprit" ou "d'âme ;" et il aurait traité ce point le premier. D'ailleurs, verset 1 ne traite pas proprement de la sanctification du corps, mais de sa consécration au service de Dieu.

Suivant d'autres Paul présente les conséquences négatives du devoir positif qu'il prescrit dans le verset 1. Cette dernière explication renferme une part de vérité, mais elle demande à être complétée, car le renouvellement de l'entendement n'est pas une œuvre négative.

L'apôtre envisage les conséquences que la consécration de sa vie à Dieu a pour le chrétien dans ses rapports avec le monde et dans ses dispositions naturelles. Ne vous conformez pas au siècle présent : dans l'activité qu'il se propose d'exercer pour Dieu, le chrétien ne doit pas suivre les règles, les coutumes, les modes qui prévalent dans le siècle présent, obéir aux passions, s'inspirer de l'esprit du monde.

Le siècle présent, c'est le monde dans son état actuel, plongé dans le mal, où règnent les ténèbres et le péché (Galates 1.4 ; 2Corinthiens 4.4) il est opposé au "siècle à venir," où la volonté de Dieu dominera seule.

Cette exhortation était d'autant plus nécessaire que l'apôtre écrivait à d'anciens païens, longtemps pénétrés de l'esprit du monde, et qui avaient de la peine à s'en dégager. (comparez 1Pierre 1.14) Ils avaient besoin d'être transformés par le renouvellement de l'entendement.

L'entendement, c'est la raison pratique, la faculté qui discerne le bien et le mal, la conscience morale. (Romains 7.22, notes) Son renouvellement, et la transformation de notre être qui en résulte, sont l'œuvre du Saint-Esprit ; ( 3.5) mais le croyant accepte cette œuvre et y coopère par la foi.

On peut donc se demander si l'on doit traduire : soyez transformés, ou : transformez-vous. Le verbe grec peut être au passif, ou au moyen avec sens réfléchi.

La vraie traduction est probablement : laissez vous transformer.

- Cette transformation, commencée par la nouvelle naissance, (Jean 3.5) doit se poursuivre incessamment chez le régénéré, car la chair continue à lutter en lui contre l'esprit. (Romains 8.4) Le verbe au présent indique un changement qui se continue.

L'entendement de l'homme naturel est obscurci et faussé par suite de la domination du péché dans la chair ; il est devenu un "entendement réprouvé ;" (Romains 1.28) il faut qu'il soit renouvelé, afin que nous discernions, que nous reconnaissions clairement à l'épreuve quelle est la volonté de Dieu, ce que Dieu veut que nous fassions, savoir ce qui est bon et agréable à Dieu et parfait.

C'est ainsi que traduisent la plupart des interprètes modernes ; ils objectent surtout à l'explication qui considère les mots : bon, agréable, parfait comme des qualificatifs de la volonté de Dieu, que le mot agréable a pour complément sous-entendu : à Dieu, comme à verset 1 et dans 2Corinthiens 5.9.

Le grec exige en tout cas que l'on traduise : quelle est, en quoi consiste, la volonté de Dieu. La traduction : que la volonté de Dieu est bonne, agréable et parfaite, ne saurait se justifier.

- Quelques majuscules portent, au lieu des impératifs : Ne vous conformez, pas, soyez transformés, des infinitifs qui dépendent du verbe : (verset 1) Je vous exhorte à ne point vous conformer (A, B, etc.), mais à vous laisser transformer (Sin, A, B, etc.).

- Le renouvellement de l'entendement est la leçon de B, A, D, etc.

- On lit : de votre entendement dans Sin. et quelques autres majuscules
