Il apparaît, dans d'autres parties de l'épître aux Corinthiens, que de faux docteurs enseignaient des doctrines profanes. Un tel enseignement ne pouvait que corrompre, polluer et détruire l’édification des chrétiens d’alors. Elle devait être gardée pure et sainte devant Dieu. Ceux qui ont répandu ces vains principes, ont profané l'église de Corinthe, provoquant par là leur propre destruction.

Christ, par son Esprit, « demeure » dans chaque véritable croyant. Les chrétiens sont saints, selon leur profession de foi : ils doivent en conséquence, rester purs et « propres », à la fois dans leur cœur comme dans leurs conversations. Celui qui estime être « le temple du Saint-Esprit », mais qui, cependant, ne se sent pas concerné par la recherche de sa sanctification personnelle, ni par la paix et la pureté au sein de l'église, se trompe en fait lui-même.
