Grec : "Dorment." Ces paroles disent clairement que le jugement dénoncé (verset 29) ne s'est pas fait attendre ; Dieu l'exerçait déjà à Corinthe lorsque Paul écrivait. Mais en quoi consistait-il ?

En d'autres termes, faut-il entendre les mots infirmes, malades, morts à la lettre, se rapportant au corps, ou spirituellement, s'appliquant à l'âme ?

La plupart des interprètes, entre autres Calvin, Gerlach, Godet, se décident pour le premier sens, s'appuyant surtout sur verset 32, où le mot châtiés ne peut, selon eux, s'entendre que d'une épreuve extérieure.

Mais, sans exclure la possibilité de tels châtiments dans l'Eglise de Corinthe, ne reste-t-on pas plus sûrement et plus largement dans la vérité en donnant à tous ces mots un sens spirituel ?

D'abord, la conséquence naturelle d'un coupable abus de la cène est certainement de rendre l'âme infirme, malade, et de l'endormir, plutôt que le corps. Un tel châtiment est infaillible ; mais combien de communiants indignes ne sont punis ni par la maladie, ni par la mort ! Une telle vue serait propre à accréditer sur la cène des idées effrayantes et superstitieuses, qui n'existent déjà que trop.

Ensuite, Paul aurait-il exprimé la mort du corps sous une condamnation de Dieu par cette douce image du sommeil, que l'Ecriture applique à ceux qui se sont endormis (en Christ) ? Voir 1Corinthiens 15.16-18,20,51 ; Matthieu 27.52 ; Jean 11.11 ; Actes 7.60 ; 13.36 ; 1Thessaloniciens 4.13-15. Même le temps du verbe employé ici paraît contraire à cette idée.
