World English Bible We are fools for Christ's sake, but you are wise in Christ. We are weak, but you are strong. You have honor, but we have dishonor.

Ici encore l'ironie est dans le contraste des choses, sinon dans les paroles.

Les apôtres avaient franchement et complètement accepté devant tous la folie, (1Corinthiens 1.18 et suivants) l'apparente faiblesse et les mépris de la croix ; les Corinthiens, au contraire, pour la plupart exempts de souffrances, voulaient unir à l'Evangile la gloire d'une sagesse et d'une position brillante au sein du règne de Dieu.

Or, Paul veut les humilier par ce contraste et leur faire sentir combien ils devaient être moralement inférieurs à ces témoins qui avaient été purifiés au feu de telles épreuves, qui avaient ainsi une ressemblance de plus avec leur Maître, et qui le suivaient dans la voie des douleurs. (versets 11,13)

Une lâche peur de la souffrance et du sacrifice, la recherche du bien-être et de ce qui est grand aux yeux des hommes, seront toujours incompatibles avec l'esprit de l'Evangile. Combien est répandue, aujourd'hui encore, cette erreur des chrétiens de Corinthe !

Plusieurs, laissant la souffrance et les renoncements aux premiers âges de l'Eglise, pensent s'élever par un christianisme commode au niveau d'un siècle cultivé, posséder la considération des hommes, "jouir du monde et se servir de Dieu,"
