Lévitique 11.44 ; 19.2. La sainteté de Dieu est pour tout homme le plus impérieux motif de devenir saint. S'y refuser, serait s'exclure de la communion avec Dieu, qui, par sa nature même, ne peut avoir aucun contact avec ce qui est souillé.

Ces paroles, et l'application qu'en fait l'apôtre, prouvent combien il est faux d'admettre que dans l'Ancien Testament le mot saint signifie seulement "mis à part," consacré pour le service de Dieu, et n'implique pas l'idée de la pureté morale.

Si tous les objets qui servaient au culte étaient appelés saints, s'il était défendu de les employer à aucun usage profane, c'était là un symbole qui devait prêcher aux adorateurs du vrai Dieu la sainteté réelle du cœur et de la vie qu'il exige de ses enfants. (verset 22 et suiv)
