Salomon est infidèle au Seigneur
1 Now king Solomon loved many foreign women, together with the daughter of Pharaoh, women of the Moabites, Ammonites, Edomites, Sidonians, and Hittites;2 of the nations concerning which Yahweh said to the children of Israel, "You shall not go among them, neither shall they come among you; for surely they will turn away your heart after their gods." Solomon joined to these in love.3 He had seven hundred wives, princesses, and three hundred concubines; and his wives turned away his heart.4 For it happened, when Solomon was old, that his wives turned away his heart after other gods; and his heart was not perfect with Yahweh his God, as was the heart of David his father.5 For Solomon went after Ashtoreth the goddess of the Sidonians, and after Milcom the abomination of the Ammonites.6 Solomon did that which was evil in the sight of Yahweh, and didn't go fully after Yahweh, as did David his father.7 Then Solomon built a high place for Chemosh the abomination of Moab, on the mountain that is before Jerusalem, and for Molech the abomination of the children of Ammon.8 So he did for all his foreign wives, who burnt incense and sacrificed to their gods.9 Yahweh was angry with Solomon, because his heart was turned away from Yahweh, the God of Israel, who had appeared to him twice,10 and had commanded him concerning this thing, that he should not go after other gods: but he didn't keep that which Yahweh commanded.11 Therefore Yahweh said to Solomon, "Because this is done by you, and you have not kept my covenant and my statutes, which I have commanded you, I will surely tear the kingdom from you, and will give it to your servant.12 Notwithstanding I will not do it in your days, for David your father's sake; but I will tear it out of the hand of your son.13 However I will not tear away all the kingdom; but I will give one tribe to your son, for David my servant's sake, and for Jerusalem's sake which I have chosen."Les adversaires de Salomon
14 Yahweh raised up an adversary to Solomon, Hadad the Edomite: he was of the king's seed in Edom.15 For it happened, when David was in Edom, and Joab the captain of the army was gone up to bury the slain, and had struck every male in Edom16 (for Joab and all Israel remained there six months, until he had cut off every male in Edom);17 that Hadad fled, he and certain Edomites of his father's servants with him, to go into Egypt, Hadad being yet a little child.18 They arose out of Midian, and came to Paran; and they took men with them out of Paran, and they came to Egypt, to Pharaoh king of Egypt, who gave him a house, and appointed him food, and gave him land.19 Hadad found great favor in the sight of Pharaoh, so that he gave him as wife the sister of his own wife, the sister of Tahpenes the queen.20 The sister of Tahpenes bore him Genubath his son, whom Tahpenes weaned in Pharaoh's house; and Genubath was in Pharaoh's house among the sons of Pharaoh.21 When Hadad heard in Egypt that David slept with his fathers, and that Joab the captain of the army was dead, Hadad said to Pharaoh, "Let me depart, that I may go to my own country."22 Then Pharaoh said to him, "But what have you lacked with me, that behold, you seek to go to your own country?" He answered, "Nothing, however only let me depart."23 God raised up an adversary to him, Rezon the son of Eliada, who had fled from his lord Hadadezer king of Zobah.24 He gathered men to him, and became captain over a troop, when David killed them of Zobah: and they went to Damascus, and lived therein, and reigned in Damascus.25 He was an adversary to Israel all the days of Solomon, besides the mischief of Hadad: and he abhorred Israel, and reigned over Syria.La révolte de Jéroboam
26 Jeroboam the son of Nebat, an Ephraimite of Zeredah, a servant of Solomon, whose mother's name was Zeruah, a widow, he also lifted up his hand against the king.27 This was the reason why he lifted up his hand against the king: Solomon built Millo, and repaired the breach of the city of David his father.28 The man Jeroboam was a mighty man of valor; and Solomon saw the young man that he was industrious, and he put him in charge of all the labor of the house of Joseph.29 It happened at that time, when Jeroboam went out of Jerusalem, that the prophet Ahijah the Shilonite found him in the way; now Ahijah had clad himself with a new garment; and they two were alone in the field.30 Ahijah laid hold of the new garment that was on him, and tore it in twelve pieces.31 He said to Jeroboam, "Take ten pieces; for thus says Yahweh, the God of Israel, 'Behold, I will tear the kingdom out of the hand of Solomon, and will give ten tribes to you32 (but he shall have one tribe, for my servant David's sake and for Jerusalem's sake, the city which I have chosen out of all the tribes of Israel);33 because that they have forsaken me, and have worshiped Ashtoreth the goddess of the Sidonians, Chemosh the god of Moab, and Milcom the god of the children of Ammon. They have not walked in my ways, to do that which is right in my eyes, and to keep my statutes and my ordinances, as David his father did.34 "'However I will not take the whole kingdom out of his hand; but I will make him prince all the days of his life, for David my servant's sake whom I chose, who kept my commandments and my statutes;35 but I will take the kingdom out of his son's hand, and will give it to you, even ten tribes.36 To his son will I give one tribe, that David my servant may have a lamp always before me in Jerusalem, the city which I have chosen me to put my name there.37 I will take you, and you shall reign according to all that your soul desires, and shall be king over Israel.38 It shall be, if you will listen to all that I command you, and will walk in my ways, and do that which is right in my eyes, to keep my statutes and my commandments, as David my servant did; that I will be with you, and will build you a sure house, as I built for David, and will give Israel to you.39 I will for this afflict the seed of David, but not forever.'"40 Solomon sought therefore to kill Jeroboam; but Jeroboam arose, and fled into Egypt, to Shishak king of Egypt, and was in Egypt until the death of Solomon.41 Now the rest of the acts of Solomon, and all that he did, and his wisdom, aren't they written in the book of the acts of Solomon?42 The time that Solomon reigned in Jerusalem over all Israel was forty years.43 Solomon slept with his fathers, and was buried in the city of David his father: and Rehoboam his son reigned in his place. -

1 Le roi Salomon aime encore beaucoup de femmes étrangères : d’abord la fille du roi d’Égypte, puis des femmes moabites, ammonites, édomites, sidoniennes, hittites.2 Pourtant, le SEIGNEUR a dit aux Israélites : « Ne vous mélangez pas avec les gens de ces peuples-là et ne les laissez pas se mélanger avec vous. Sinon ils vont vous entraîner à adorer leurs dieux. » Mais Salomon s’attache à ces peuples parce qu’il aime des femmes de leurs pays.3 Il a 700 femmes de haut rang et 300 femmes de deuxième rang. Elles ont beaucoup d’influence sur lui.4 Quand Salomon devient vieux, ses femmes l’entraînent à adorer d’autres dieux. Alors son cœur n’est plus tout entier au SEIGNEUR son Dieu, contrairement à son père David.5 Salomon adore Astarté, la déesse des habitants de Sidon. Il adore aussi Molek, l’horrible dieu des Ammonites.6 Il fait ce qui est mal aux yeux du SEIGNEUR et il ne lui obéit pas pleinement, contrairement à son père David.7 À cette époque, Salomon construit un lieu sacré sur la colline, en face de Jérusalem. Ce lieu sacré est destiné à Kemoch, l’horrible dieu des Moabites, et à Molek, l’horrible dieu des Ammonites.8 Il agit de la même façon pour les dieux de toutes ses femmes étrangères. Ainsi, elles peuvent brûler de l’encens et offrir des sacrifices d’animaux à leurs dieux.9 Le SEIGNEUR, Dieu d’Israël, s’est montré deux fois à Salomon. Il lui a commandé de ne pas adorer d’autres dieux que lui. Mais Salomon n’obéit pas au SEIGNEUR, et son cœur se détourne de lui. C’est pourquoi le SEIGNEUR se met en colère contre Salomon11 et il dit : « Tu agis mal. Tu ne respectes pas mon alliance, ni les ordres que je t’ai donnés. Alors je vais t’arracher le royaume et je vais le donner à l’un de tes serviteurs.12 Pourtant, à cause de ton père David, je ne réaliserai pas cela pendant ta vie. Mais c’est à ton fils que j’arracherai le royaume.13 D’ailleurs, je ne lui arracherai pas tout le royaume, je lui laisserai une tribu, à cause de ton père David et à cause de Jérusalem, la ville que j’ai choisie. »Les adversaires de Salomon
14 Le SEIGNEUR envoie un ennemi à Salomon. C’est un Édomite du nom de Hadad qui appartient à la famille royale.15 À une époque, David a combattu le royaume d’Édom. Et Joab, le chef de son armée, est allé dans ce pays pour enterrer les soldats d’Israël, morts au combat. Ensuite, il a tué tous les garçons et tous les hommes d’Édom.16 Joab et toute sa troupe sont restés six mois dans ce pays pour tuer les garçons et les hommes.17 Hadad était encore très jeune. Pourtant, il a réussi à fuir en Égypte avec quelques Édomites qui ont été serviteurs de son père.18 Ils sont partis de la région de Madian et ils sont arrivés dans le désert de Paran. Ils ont entraîné avec eux quelques hommes et ils sont allés en Égypte auprès du Pharaon, le roi de ce pays. Celui-ci a donné à Hadad une maison et des terres et il s’est chargé de le nourrir.19 Le roi a été si bon pour Hadad qu’il lui a donné en mariage la sœur de la reine Tapenès, sa femme.20 La sœur de Tapenès a donné à Hadad un fils appelé Guenoubath. Tapenès l’a fait élever dans le palais du roi d’Égypte et il a vécu là, avec les enfants du roi.21 Hadad est toujours en Égypte, quand il apprend que David et le général Joab sont morts. Alors il dit au roi d’Égypte : « Permets-moi de rentrer dans mon pays. »22 Le roi lui demande : « Est-ce qu’il te manque quelque chose auprès de moi ? Pourquoi désires-tu rentrer chez toi ? » Hadad répond : « Il ne me manque rien, mais permets-moi pourtant de partir. »23 Dieu envoie un autre ennemi à Salomon. C’est Rezon, fils d’Éliada. Il a fui de chez son maître Hadadézer, roi de Soba.24 À une époque, David a détruit l’armée de Hadadézer. Alors Rezon a rassemblé des gens autour de lui et il est devenu chef de bande. Il est allé à Damas, il s’est installé là et il est devenu roi.25 Rezon a été un ennemi du peuple d’Israël pendant toute la vie de Salomon, tout comme Hadad. 26 Jéroboam, fils de Nebath, est au service du roi Salomon. C’est un Éfraïmite, originaire de Seréda. Sa mère est veuve et s’appelle Seroua.27 Voici à quelle occasion Jéroboam se révolte contre le roi : C’est l’époque où Salomon fait construire la terrasse appelée « Millo » et réparer un trou dans le mur de la « Ville de David ».28 Jéroboam est un jeune homme fort et courageux. Salomon voit comment il travaille, il le choisit pour surveiller les ouvriers des tribus d’Éfraïm et de Manassé.29 Un jour, Jéroboam sort de Jérusalem. Le prophète Ahia, de Silo, le rencontre sur la route. Ils sont tous les deux seuls dans la campagne. Ahia porte un vêtement tout neuf,30 il le prend et le déchire en douze morceaux.31 Ensuite il dit à Jéroboam : « Prends pour toi dix morceaux. En effet, voici le message du SEIGNEUR, Dieu d’Israël : Je vais arracher le royaume à Salomon et je te donnerai dix tribus.32 Je lui laisserai une tribu, à cause de mon serviteur David et à cause de Jérusalem, la ville que j’ai choisie dans tout le pays d’Israël.33 Je ferai cela parce que les Israélites m’ont abandonné. En effet, ils se sont mis à genoux devant Astarté, la déesse des gens de Sidon, devant Kemoch, le dieu des Moabites, et devant Molek, le dieu des Ammonites. Ils n’ont pas suivi le chemin que je leur ai montré, et ils n’ont pas fait ce qui est bien à mes yeux. En effet, ils n’ont pas obéi aux lois et aux règles que je leur ai données, contrairement à David, le père de Salomon.34 Mon serviteur David que j’ai choisi a obéi à mes commandements et à mes lois. À cause de lui, je n’arracherai pas le royaume des mains de Salomon, mais je lui laisserai le pouvoir jusqu’à la fin de sa vie.35 C’est au fils de Salomon que j’enlèverai le royaume, et à toi, Jéroboam, je donnerai dix tribus.36 Je laisserai une tribu au fils de Salomon. Ainsi, il y aura toujours quelqu’un de la famille de David mon serviteur pour être roi devant moi à Jérusalem. En effet, c’est la ville que j’ai choisie pour y montrer ma présence parmi vous.37 « Toi, Jéroboam, je te choisis, et tu pourras être roi sur Israël, comme tu le désires.38 Écoute tout ce que je te commanderai, suis le chemin que je te montrerai. Fais ce qui est bien à mes yeux. Obéis aux lois et aux commandements que je te donne, comme mon serviteur David l’a fait. Si tu agis ainsi, je serai avec toi. J’établirai solidement le pouvoir royal dans ta famille, comme je l’ai fait pour David. Je te donnerai les dix tribus d’Israël.39 Par là, j’abaisserai la famille royale de David, mais non pas pour toujours. »40 Après cela, Salomon cherche à tuer Jéroboam. Mais Jéroboam fuit en Égypte et il va auprès de Chichac, le roi de ce pays. Il reste là-bas jusqu’à la mort de Salomon.41 Les autres actes de Salomon, tout ce qu’il a fait, la sagesse qu’il avait, tout cela est écrit dans « L’Histoire de Salomon ».42 Salomon a été roi de tout le peuple d’Israël pendant 40 ans à Jérusalem.43 Quand il rejoint ses ancêtres, on l’enterre dans la « Ville de David », son père. Son fils Roboam devient roi à sa place.

Les avertissements sérieux qu'il avait reçus (6.12 et suivants, 9.4 et suivants) durant les années écoulées, n'avaient pas été donnés sans motifs. Le Seigneur savait à quelle tentation l'exposaient son amour du faste et de la grandeur, sa prospérité inouïe et la largeur même de son esprit. Le moment vint où la pente fatale l'emporta, assurément par l'effet d'un manque de vigilance et de prière, et où il fut livré au torrent de ses propres inclinations. Dieu ne fit-il rien pour l'arrêter sur cette pente par l'intermédiaire de ses prophètes ? Nous l'ignorons. Quoi qu'il en soit, nous comprenons que Dieu, en permettant cette chute du grand roi, voulait abattre l'orgueil de son peuple et briser, par le schisme qui devait en résulter, le sentiment de sa force propre. Les femmes de Salomon et ses concubines, son idolâtrie. (1 Rois 11:1-8)
Il n'y a pas de plus étonnant et triste exemple de dépravation humaine dans l'Écriture, que celle relatée ici, dans ce texte. Salomon adora devant tous, d'abominables idoles !La colère divine. (1 Rois 11:9-13)

Il est probablement et graduellement tombé dans les pièges de l'orgueil et du luxe, perdant ainsi son goût pour l'authentique sagesse. Rien en nous-mêmes, ne peut nous protéger de la tromperie et de la dépravation du cœur humain. Ce n'est pas l'âge, non plus, qui améliorera la mauvaise propension de notre cœur. Si les passions inhérentes à notre péché, ne sont pas crucifiées et mortifiées par la Grâce divine, elles ne s'éteindront jamais d'elles-mêmes, et perdureront, même si les occasions de les abandonner se présentent.
Que celui qui croit être debout prenne garde qu'il ne tombe, 1Corinthiens 10:12*. Nous pouvons voir à quel point nous sommes faibles quand nous sommes dépourvus de la grâce divine ; sachons donc vivre dans la dépendance constante de cette dernière !
Soyons vigilants et sobres à la fois. Nous vivons un combat dangereux, dans le pays de l'adversaire : le pire ennemi que nous ayons est celui qui s'attaque en traître à notre cœur : Satan !
