World English Bible It happened after many days, that the word of Yahweh came to Elijah, in the third year, saying, "Go, show yourself to Ahab; and I will send rain on the earth."

1 à 19 Elie se montre à Achab.

Dans la troisième année. On peut compter les trois années depuis la dernière date indiquée, 17.7, le départ du torrent de Kérith ; de cette manière, il n'y a pas contradiction avec la tradition juive mentionnée dans le Talmud, qui compte trois ans et demi de sécheresse, non plus qu'avec Luc 4.25 et Jacques 5.17. L'on donne dans ce cas au séjour près du Kérith la durée d'une année entière. Mais l'on peut dater les trois ans du commencement de la sécheresse. Dans ce sens on arrive difficilement à une durée de trois années et demie, et si l'on ne veut pas admettre que cette donnée soit inexacte, il ne reste qu'à ajouter aux trois années de sécheresse proprement dite l'été qui avait précédé la première saison d'automne où la pluie régulière avait fait défaut.

Montre-toi à Achab. Elie n'avait pas demandé une sécheresse de trois ans et demi, mais d'une manière générale une sécheresse. La durée du fléau devait dépendre de l'attitude du roi et du peuple. Dieu, qui lit dans les cœurs, juge que maintenant le moment est venu de rendre la pluie au pays.

Les épreuves ou les jugements les plus sévères, ne peuvent par eux-mêmes, conduire les pécheurs à l'humilité ou au changement de leur cœur ; à part le sang de Jésus-Christ, rien ne peut nous réconcilier avec Dieu, quant à notre culpabilité de pécheur ; à part le Saint-Esprit sanctificateur, rien ne peut nous purifier de cette « pollution ». Les sacrificateurs et les Lévites étaient partis dans le territoire de Juda et à Jérusalem, 2Chroniques 11:13,14, mais au lieu de les solliciter, Dieu s'adressa au prophète, pour qu'il annonce et expose Sa Parole. Ces sacrificateurs étaient probablement issus des écoles religieuses établies par Samuel. Ils ne disposaient pas du même esprit de prophétie qu'Élie, mais néanmoins, ils enseignaient le peuple à toujours rester fidèle au Dieu d'Israël. Jézabel ne cherchait qu'à les exterminer. Le peu de sacrificateurs épargnés, fut forcé de se cacher.

Dieu dispose toujours de serviteurs, prêts à œuvrer pour Lui ; la foi, la crainte et l'amour de Son Nom, les fruits du Saint-Esprit, seront toujours acceptés par notre Rédempteur.

Remarquez comment Dieu établit merveilleusement Ses serviteurs, en vue de pratiquer leur ministère, tout en les protégeant lors des périodes difficiles. Le pain et l'eau étaient alors des denrées rares, mais Abdias en trouva suffisamment pour les prophètes de l'Éternel, afin de les maintenir en vie. Le roi Achab ne pensait qu'à conserver son bétail, mais il ne portait aucune attention à son âme, au risque de courir à sa perte. Il n'avait de préoccupation que de trouver de l'herbe, mais ne se souciait même pas de la faveur divine ; il ne cherchait en fait, qu'à endiguer les effets de la malédiction sur son pays, sans se demander comment en ôter la cause. On peut dire que c'est un bon présage pour une nation, que de voir Dieu appeler Ses serviteurs à se manifester aux yeux de tous.

Lors de l'épreuve, il est préférable de consommer alors « le pain de l'affliction », et d'en tirer tout l'enseignement qui en découle.

      23 Let them therefore give us two bulls; and let them choose one bull for themselves, and cut it in pieces, and lay it on the wood, and put no fire under; and I will dress the other bull, and lay it on the wood, and put no fire under it.
      24 You call on the name of your god, and I will call on the name of Yahweh. The God who answers by fire, let him be God." All the people answered, "It is well said."
      25 Elijah said to the prophets of Baal, "Choose one bull for yourselves, and dress it first; for you are many; and call on the name of your god, but put no fire under it."
      26 They took the bull which was given them, and they dressed it, and called on the name of Baal from morning even until noon, saying, Baal, hear us. But there was no voice, nor any who answered. They leaped about the altar which was made.
      27 It happened at noon, that Elijah mocked them, and said, "Cry aloud; for he is a god. Either he is musing, or he has gone aside, or he is on a journey, or perhaps he sleeps and must be awakened."
      28 They cried aloud, and cut themselves in their way with knives and lances, until the blood gushed out on them.
      29 It was so, when midday was past, that they prophesied until the time of the offering of the offering; but there was neither voice, nor any to answer, nor any who regarded.
      30 Elijah said to all the people, "Come near to me"; and all the people came near to him. He repaired the altar of Yahweh that was thrown down.
      31 Elijah took twelve stones, according to the number of the tribes of the sons of Jacob, to whom the word of Yahweh came, saying, "Israel shall be your name."
      32 With the stones he built an altar in the name of Yahweh. He made a trench around the altar, large enough to contain two measures of seed.

      38 Then the fire of Yahweh fell, and consumed the burnt offering, and the wood, and the stones, and the dust, and licked up the water that was in the trench.
      39 When all the people saw it, they fell on their faces. They said, "Yahweh, he is God! Yahweh, he is God!"
      40 Elijah said to them, "Seize the prophets of Baal! Don't let one of them escape!" They seized them. Elijah brought them down to the brook Kishon, and killed them there.
