David avait conquis le pays d'Edom (2Samuel 8.14). Il y avait bien eu vers la fin du règne de Salomon une tentative de soulèvement par les efforts de Hadad (1Rois 11.14 et suivants). Nous ignorons le résultat de cette entreprise ; mais il ressort de notre passage que Josaphat était maître du pays et que le roi d'Edom était son vassal. Cette remarque forme la transition à ce qui suit.
