Seulement... Dans ce tableau brillant des plus belles espérances, il y avait un point noir, le culte des hauts-lieux. La loi prescrivait que les sacrifices fussent offerts dans le Tabernacle (Deutéronome 12.5) ; mais elle autorisait le culte dans tous les lieux où l'Eternel s'était visiblement manifesté (Exode 20.24). Une fois établis dans le pays de Canaan, les Israélites s'étaient approprié les lieux de culte institués sur les hauteurs par les anciens habitants, surtout depuis que, par le fait de la séparation de l'arche d'avec le Tabernacle, il n'y avait plus de sanctuaire central proprement dit. Cette situation exposait le peuple au péril de retomber dans l'idolâtrie. Le vrai lieu de culte central prévu par Deutéronome 12.11 n'existait pas encore.
