World English Bible The king went to Gibeon to sacrifice there; for that was the great high place. Solomon offered a thousand burnt offerings on that altar.

4 à 15 Le songe de Salomon. Le fait ici raconté nous reporte aux premiers jours du règne de Salomon (voir 2.39). Plein d'amour pour Dieu et pour son peuple, le jeune roi sent sa faiblesse, il demande et obtient la sagesse dont il a besoin pour remplir sa tâche.

A Gabaon : à peu de distance au nord.de Jérusalem, dans la tribu de Benjamin (voir Josué 9.3). C'est là qu'avaient été transportés le Tabernacle et l'autel des holocaustes (voir 1Chroniques 16.39 ; 21.29 ; 2Chroniques 1.3,5). Gabaon était ainsi devenu le haut-lieu principal ; ce n'était pas même un haut-lieu dans le sens fâcheux du mot ; aussi l'Eternel agrée-t-il le sacrifice de Salomon.

Pour y sacrifier. D'après 2Chroniques 1.2-3, les représentants du peuple étaient invités à cet acte solennel par lequel Salomon voulait inaugurer son règne et le consacrer à Dieu en implorant sa bénédiction.

Cet autel : l'autel des holocaustes fait au désert (2Chroniques 1.5).
