A ce moment important l'Eternel vient au-devant de Salomon qui le recherche de tout son cœur (Proverbes 8.17 ; Jacques 4.8).

En songe. Le songe n'est pas une vision comme celles par lesquelles Dieu se révélait aux prophètes ; c'est un rêve d'une vivacité extraordinaire ; Dieu peut aussi se servir de ce moyen (Job 33.14-15), comme il le fait même envers les rois païens (Pharaon, Nébucadnetsar). C'est là une forme inférieure de révélation.

Le songe de Salomon n'était vraiment pas commun ! Pendant que son corps était plongé dans un profond sommeil, son âme, quant à elle, était toujours « éveillée » ; c'est ce qui lui permit de percevoir la vision divine, et de faire un choix approprié.

De manière similaire, Dieu nous prédispose pour être heureux, en nous assurant que nous aurons tout ce dont nous avons besoin, et ce pourquoi nous avons prié.

Salomon a fait son choix alors qu'il était endormi, pendant que sa raison était pour le moins inactive ; cette circonstance révèle que tout cela était « orchestré » par la grâce divine. Le fait d'avoir d'humbles désirs et d'être conscient de notre faiblesse, ne peut que nous rendre agréables aux yeux du Seigneur : nous devrions être comme de « petits enfants ». Les hommes les plus sages et les plus prévenants ne sont vraiment efficaces, que lorsqu'ils sont convaincus de leur propre faiblesse, sans éprouver la moindre convoitise.

Salomon pria Dieu, de lui donner la sagesse. Nous devons prier ainsi, Jacques 1:5, afin que cette dernière puisse nous aider dans le ministère pour lequel nous sommes appelés, et dans les diverses occasions que nous rencontrons. Dieu acceptera principalement ceux qui préfèrent les bénédictions spirituelles plutôt que ceux qui ne convoitent que celles que l'on peut obtenir ici-bas.

La prière de Salomon était décisive : il obtint même davantage que ce qu'il avait demandé. Dieu lui a donné la sagesse, une sagesse qu'aucun autre prince ne put avoir ; Il lui a également donné la richesse et l'honneur.

Si nous avons l'assurance d'être au bénéfice de la sagesse et de l'honneur qui sont donnés par le ciel, ceux-ci nous apporteront la prospérité, et modèreront notre convoitise. Pour obtenir des bénédictions spirituelles, il nous faut « lutter » avec Dieu, Le solliciter par la prière, pour qu'Il nous les accorde. Quant à la manière d'obtenir des bénédictions terrestres, elle consiste également à nous mettre en rapport avec Lui, en Lui exposant l'objet de notre requête.

Salomon obtint la sagesse, parce qu'il l'a réclamée ; il eut la richesse en plus, sans même l'avoir demandée !
