7 à 20 La liste des intendants. Leur nombre correspondait à celui des mois de l'année ; c'étaient une sorte de fermiers généraux, chargés de lever des impôts, préposés chacun à un territoire déterminé, avec la tâche de fournir à l'entretien du roi et du nombreux personnel de la cour. Comme ces impôts étaient payés en nature, le pays était divisé en douze départements, plus ou moins étendus selon la richesse et la fertilité des différents districts. Ces départements ne coïncidaient point avec le territoire des tribus. Ils sont mentionnés ici, non d'après leur position géographique, mais apparemment d'après l'ordre suivant lequel les intendants livraient leurs produits, chacun pendant un mois de l'année. Cinq de ces intendants, au lieu d'être désignés par leurs noms propres, le sont par celui de leur père (fils de). Peut-être était-ce vraiment leur nom : Benhur, Bendéker, etc. Cependant cette forme n'est pas ordinaire en hébreu. On ne s'explique pas bien cette dénomination.
