Comparer 1Corinthiens 16.16 note. On conçoit facilement combien il est indispensable que les ministres de la Parole de Dieu soient estimés et aimés, à cause de leur œuvre, œuvre excellente et sainte, qui ne peut avoir de succès qu'à cette condition. Mais, d'autre part, Paul plaide leur cause en rappelant les devoirs et les renoncements qui leur incombent, bien plus qu'il ne revendique pour eux des honneurs.

En général, l'expérience prouve que ceux qui travaillent, qui président dans le Seigneur, qui avertissent, sont considérés et aimés de leurs troupeaux. Les troupeaux toutefois peuvent faillir à leurs obligations, et, dans ce cas, l'exhortation de l'apôtre, ou plutôt son humble prière, (verset 12) leur rappelle leur devoir.

Une variante porte : "entre eux," ou "avec eux," c'est-à-dire avec ceux qui président. Elle n'est pas fondée, mais cette exhortation générale à conserver la paix peut se lier à celle qui précède, la désunion, le trouble dans les troupeaux venant souvent d'un manque d'égards pour les pasteurs et pour leurs avertissements.
