On pourrait voir dans ces paroles une simple recommandation de l'apôtre que sa lettre soit lue à tous les membres de l'Église, qu'aucun ne manque quand il en sera fait lecture, ou qu'elle soit communiquée à ceux qui seraient absents.

Telle est l'opinion de beaucoup d'interprètes. Mais alors, pourquoi cette solennelle adjuration par le Seigneur ? Il faut, avec Calvin, chercher un autre motif de ces paroles. "Il craignait, ou que des hommes mal intentionnés et envieux ne supprimassent sa lettre, ou que d'autres, par une fausse sagesse et une prudence charnelle, ne la communiquassent qu'à un petit nombre. Car il y a toujours de ces gens qui nient que les choses qu'ils reconnaissent eux-mêmes comme excellentes soient utiles au vulgaire. Ainsi l'Esprit de Dieu veut que ce qu'il a produit dans cette lettre, par le ministère de Paul, soit publié au sein de toute l'Église. D'où il paraît qu'ils sont plus endurcis que les démons, ceux qui, aujourd'hui, interdisent au peuple la lecture des épîtres de saint Paul, puisqu'ils ne sont point émus d'une si sévère adjuration."
