mais nous qui sommes du jour, soyons sobres, revêtant la cuirasse de la foi et de l'amour, et, pour casque, l'espérance du salut ;

Il ne suffit pas, pour éviter les œuvres des ténèbres, de veiller et d'être sobre ; il faut combattre, repousser tous les assauts du tentateur.

Et, à cet effet, le chrétien possède des armes qui lui sont propres. L'apôtre en fait ailleurs une énumération plus complète. (Ephésiens 6.11-18, note.) Ces armes, pour parler sans figure, sont la foi, l'amour, l'espérance, que l'apôtre trouvait avec bonheur chez ses frères de Thessalonique, (voir 1Thessaloniciens 1.3, note) et qu'il rappelle encore ici.
