וַיָּבֹ֣א רְחַבְעָם֮ יְרוּשָׁלִַם֒ וַיַּקְהֵל֩ אֶת־בֵּ֨ית יְהוּדָ֜ה וּבִנְיָמִ֗ן מֵאָ֨ה וּשְׁמוֹנִ֥ים אֶ֛לֶף בָּח֖וּר עֹשֵׂ֣ה מִלְחָמָ֑ה לְהִלָּחֵם֙ עִם־יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל לְהָשִׁ֥יב אֶת־הַמַּמְלָכָ֖ה לִרְחַבְעָֽם׃

וַיְהִי֙ דְּבַר־יְהוָ֔ה אֶל־שְׁמַֽעְיָ֥הוּ אִישׁ־הָאֱלֹהִ֖ים לֵאמֹֽר׃
3
אֱמֹ֕ר אֶל־רְחַבְעָ֥ם בֶּן־שְׁלֹמֹ֖ה מֶ֣לֶךְ יְהוּדָ֑ה וְאֶל֙ כָּל־יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל בִּיהוּדָ֥ה וּבִנְיָמִ֖ן לֵאמֹֽר׃
4
כֹּ֣ה אָמַ֣ר יְהוָ֡ה לֹא־תַעֲלוּ֩ וְלֹא־תִלָּ֨חֲמ֜וּ עִם־אֲחֵיכֶ֗ם שׁ֚וּבוּ אִ֣ישׁ לְבֵית֔וֹ כִּ֧י מֵֽאִתִּ֛י נִהְיָ֖ה הַדָּבָ֣ר הַזֶּ֑ה וַֽיִּשְׁמְעוּ֙ אֶת־דִּבְרֵ֣י יְהוָ֔ה וַיָּשֻׁ֖בוּ מִלֶּ֥כֶת אֶל־יָרָבְעָֽם׃

וַיֵּ֥שֶׁב רְחַבְעָ֖ם בִּירוּשָׁלִָ֑ם וַיִּ֧בֶן עָרִ֛ים לְמָצ֖וֹר בִּיהוּדָֽה׃
6
וַיִּ֧בֶן אֶת־בֵּֽית־לֶ֛חֶם וְאֶת־עֵיטָ֖ם וְאֶת־תְּקֽוֹעַ׃
7
וְאֶת־בֵּֽית־צ֥וּר וְאֶת־שׂוֹכ֖וֹ וְאֶת־עֲדֻלָּֽם׃
8
וְאֶת־גַּ֥ת וְאֶת־מָרֵשָׁ֖ה וְאֶת־זִֽיף׃
9
וְאֶת־אֲדוֹרַ֥יִם וְאֶת־לָכִ֖ישׁ וְאֶת־עֲזֵקָֽה׃
10
וְאֶת־צָרְעָה֙ וְאֶת־אַיָּל֔וֹן וְאֶת־חֶבְר֔וֹן אֲשֶׁ֥ר בִּיהוּדָ֖ה וּבְבִנְיָמִ֑ן עָרֵ֖י מְצֻרֽוֹת׃
11
וַיְחַזֵּ֖ק אֶת־הַמְּצֻר֑וֹת וַיִּתֵּ֤ן בָּהֶם֙ נְגִידִ֔ים וְאֹצְר֥וֹת מַאֲכָ֖ל וְשֶׁ֥מֶן וָיָֽיִן׃
12
וּבְכָל־עִ֤יר וָעִיר֙ צִנּ֣וֹת וּרְמָחִ֔ים וַֽיְחַזְּקֵ֖ם לְהַרְבֵּ֣ה מְאֹ֑ד וַיְהִי־ל֖וֹ יְהוּדָ֥ה וּבִנְיָמִֽן׃

וְהַכֹּהֲנִים֙ וְהַלְוִיִּ֔ם אֲשֶׁ֖ר בְּכָל־יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל הִֽתְיַצְּב֥וּ עָלָ֖יו מִכָּל־גְּבוּלָֽם׃
14
כִּֽי־עָזְב֣וּ הַלְוִיִּ֗ם אֶת־מִגְרְשֵׁיהֶם֙ וַאֲחֻזָּתָ֔ם וַיֵּלְכ֥וּ לִיהוּדָ֖ה וְלִֽירוּשָׁלִָ֑ם כִּֽי־הִזְנִיחָ֤ם יָֽרָבְעָם֙ וּבָנָ֔יו מִכַּהֵ֖ן לַיהוָֽה׃
15
וַיַּֽעֲמֶד־לוֹ֙ כֹּֽהֲנִ֔ים לַבָּמ֖וֹת וְלַשְּׂעִירִ֑ים וְלָעֲגָלִ֖ים אֲשֶׁ֥ר עָשָֽׂה׃
16
וְאַחֲרֵיהֶ֗ם מִכֹּל֙ שִׁבְטֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל הַנֹּֽתְנִים֙ אֶת־לְבָבָ֔ם לְבַקֵּ֕שׁ אֶת־יְהוָ֖ה אֱלֹהֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל בָּ֚אוּ יְר֣וּשָׁלִַ֔ם לִזְבּ֕וֹחַ לַיהוָ֖ה אֱלֹהֵ֥י אֲבוֹתֵיהֶֽם׃

וַֽיְחַזְּקוּ֙ אֶת־מַלְכ֣וּת יְהוּדָ֔ה וַֽיְאַמְּצ֛וּ אֶת־רְחַבְעָ֥ם בֶּן־שְׁלֹמֹ֖ה לְשָׁנִ֣ים שָׁל֑וֹשׁ כִּ֣י הָֽלְכ֗וּ בְּדֶ֧רֶךְ דָּוִ֛יד וּשְׁלֹמֹ֖ה לְשָׁנִ֥ים שָׁלֽוֹשׁ׃

וַיִּֽקַּֽח־ל֤וֹ רְחַבְעָם֙ אִשָּׁ֔ה אֶת־מָ֣חֲלַ֔ת *בן־**בַּת־יְרִימ֖וֹת בֶּן־דָּוִ֑יד אֲבִיהַ֕יִל בַּת־אֱלִיאָ֖ב בֶּן־יִשָֽׁי׃
19
וַתֵּ֥לֶד ל֖וֹ בָּנִ֑ים אֶת־יְע֥וּשׁ וְאֶת־שְׁמַרְיָ֖ה וְאֶת־זָֽהַם׃
20
וְאַחֲרֶ֣יהָ לָקַ֔ח אֶֽת־מַעֲכָ֖ה בַּת־אַבְשָׁל֑וֹם וַתֵּ֣לֶד ל֗וֹ אֶת־אֲבִיָּה֙ וְאֶת־עַתַּ֔י וְאֶת־זִיזָ֖א וְאֶת־שְׁלֹמִֽית׃
21
וַיֶּאֱהַ֨ב רְחַבְעָ֜ם אֶת־מַעֲכָ֣ה בַת־אַבְשָׁל֗וֹם מִכָּל־נָשָׁיו֙ וּפִ֣ילַגְשָׁ֔יו כִּ֠י נָשִׁ֤ים שְׁמוֹנֶֽה־עֶשְׂרֵה֙ נָשָׂ֔א וּפִֽילַגְשִׁ֖ים שִׁשִּׁ֑ים וַיּ֗וֹלֶד עֶשְׂרִ֧ים וּשְׁמוֹנָ֛ה בָּנִ֖ים וְשִׁשִּׁ֥ים בָּנֽוֹת׃
22
וַיַּֽעֲמֵ֨ד לָרֹ֧אשׁ רְחַבְעָ֛ם אֶת־אֲבִיָּ֥ה בֶֽן־מַעֲכָ֖ה לְנָגִ֣יד בְּאֶחָ֑יו כִּ֖י לְהַמְלִיכֽוֹ׃

וַיָּבֶן֩ וַיִּפְרֹ֨ץ מִכָּל־בָּנָ֜יו לְֽכָל־אַרְצ֧וֹת יְהוּדָ֣ה וּבִנְיָמִ֗ן לְכֹל֙ עָרֵ֣י הַמְּצֻר֔וֹת וַיִּתֵּ֥ן לָהֶ֛ם הַמָּז֖וֹן לָרֹ֑ב וַיִּשְׁאַ֖ל הֲמ֥וֹן נָשִֽׁים׃

When Rehoboam had come to Jerusalem, he assembled the house of Judah and Benjamin, one hundred eighty thousand chosen men, who were warriors, to fight against Israel, to bring the kingdom again to Rehoboam.
2
But the word of Yahweh came to Shemaiah the man of God, saying,
3
"Speak to Rehoboam the son of Solomon, king of Judah, and to all Israel in Judah and Benjamin, saying,
4
'Thus says Yahweh, "You shall not go up, nor fight against your brothers! Return every man to his house; for this thing is of me."'" So they listened to the words of Yahweh, and returned from going against Jeroboam.

Rehoboam lived in Jerusalem, and built cities for defense in Judah.
6
He built Bethlehem, and Etam, and Tekoa,
7
Beth Zur, and Soco, and Adullam,
8
and Gath, and Mareshah, and Ziph,
9
and Adoraim, and Lachish, and Azekah,
10
and Zorah, and Aijalon, and Hebron, which are in Judah and in Benjamin, fortified cities.
11
He fortified the strongholds, and put captains in them, and stores of food, and oil and wine.
12
He put shields and spears in every city, and made them exceeding strong. Judah and Benjamin belonged to him.

13
The priests and the Levites who were in all Israel resorted to him out of all their border.
14
For the Levites left their suburbs and their possession, and came to Judah and Jerusalem: for Jeroboam and his sons cast them off, that they should not execute the priest's office to Yahweh;
15
and he appointed him priests for the high places, and for the male goats, and for the calves which he had made.
16
After them, out of all the tribes of Israel, such as set their hearts to seek Yahweh, the God of Israel, came to Jerusalem to sacrifice to Yahweh, the God of their fathers.
17
So they strengthened the kingdom of Judah, and made Rehoboam the son of Solomon strong, three years; for they walked three years in the way of David and Solomon.

Rehoboam took him a wife, Mahalath the daughter of Jerimoth the son of David, and of Abihail the daughter of Eliab the son of Jesse;
19
and she bore him sons: Jeush, and Shemariah, and Zaham.
20
After her he took Maacah the daughter of Absalom; and she bore him Abijah, and Attai, and Ziza, and Shelomith.
21
Rehoboam loved Maacah the daughter of Absalom above all his wives and his concubines: (for he took eighteen wives, and sixty concubines, and became the father of twenty-eight sons and sixty daughters.)
22
Rehoboam appointed Abijah the son of Maacah to be chief, the prince among his brothers; for he intended to make him king.
23
He dealt wisely, and dispersed of all his sons throughout all the lands of Judah and Benjamin, to every fortified city: and he gave them food in abundance. He sought for them many wives.

Roboam, étant arrivé à Jérusalem, assembla la maison de Juda et de Benjamin, cent quatre-vingt mille hommes de guerre choisis, pour combattre contre Israël, pour ramener le royaume à Roboam.

Mais la parole de l'Éternel fut adressée à Shémaeja, homme de Dieu, en ces termes :

Parle à Roboam, fils de Salomon, roi de Juda, et à tout Israël en Juda et en Benjamin, et dis-leur :
4
Ainsi dit l'Éternel : Vous ne monterez point, et vous ne combattrez point contre vos frères ; retournez-vous-en, chacun dans sa maison ; car ceci vient de moi. Et ils obéirent aux paroles de l'Éternel, et s'en retournèrent, renonçant à marcher contre Jéroboam.

Roboam demeura donc à Jérusalem, et il bâtit des villes fortes en Juda.

Il bâtit Bethléhem, Étam, Thékoa,
7
Beth-Tsur, Soco, Adullam,
8
Gath, Marésha, Ziph,
9
Adoraïm, Lakis, Azéka,
10
Tsoréa, Ajalon et Hébron, qui étaient en Juda et en Benjamin, et en fit des villes fortes.
11
Il les fortifia, et y mit des gouverneurs et des provisions de vivres, d'huile et de vin,
12
Et, dans chacune de ces villes, des boucliers et des lances, et il les rendit très fortes. Ainsi Juda et Benjamin furent à lui.

13
Les sacrificateurs et les Lévites, qui étaient dans tout Israël, vinrent de toutes parts se ranger auprès de lui.
14
Car les Lévites abandonnèrent leurs banlieues et leurs propriétés et vinrent en Juda et à Jérusalem, parce que Jéroboam, avec ses fils, les avaient rejetés des fonctions de sacrificateurs à l'Éternel,
15
Et s'était établi des sacrificateurs pour les hauts lieux et les démons, et pour les veaux qu'il avait faits.
16
Et à leur suite, de toutes les tribus d'Israël, ceux qui avaient à coeur de chercher l'Éternel, le Dieu d'Israël, vinrent à Jérusalem pour sacrifier à l'Éternel, le Dieu de leurs pères.
17
Et ils fortifièrent le royaume de Juda et affermirent Roboam, fils de Salomon, pendant trois ans ; car on suivit les voies de David et de Salomon pendant trois ans.

Or Roboam prit pour femme Mahalath, fille de Jérimoth, fils de David, et d'Abichaïl, fille d'Éliab, fils d'Isaï.
19
Elle lui enfanta des fils : Jéush, Shémaria et Zaham.
20
Après elle, il prit Maaca, fille d'Absalom, qui lui enfanta Abija, Atthaï, Ziza et Shélomith.
21
Et Roboam aima Maaca, fille d'Absalom, plus que toutes ses femmes et ses concubines. Car il prit dix-huit femmes et soixante concubines, et il engendra vingt-huit fils et soixante filles.
22
Roboam établit pour chef Abija, fils de Maaca, comme prince entre ses frères ; car il voulait le faire roi ;
23
Et il agit prudemment et dispersa tous ses fils dans toutes les contrées de Juda et de Benjamin, dans toutes les villes fortes ; il leur donna abondamment de quoi vivre, et demanda pour eux une multitude de femmes.
