La première réponse de l'auteur aux doutes des moqueurs est d'établir, par le fait du déluge, que le monde actuel peut périr aussi bien que l'ancien, quoique par un moyen différent, (verset 7) lorsqu'arrivera le bouleversement qui doit renouveler les cieux et la terre.

Ce que les moqueurs oublient le voulant, c'est que l'élément même d'où ; la terre fut tirée et par lequel elle est formée, (Genèse 1.2 ; 6-8 ; Psaumes 24.2 ; Psaumes 104.5-8 ; Job 38.8-11) l'eau, a aussi été le moyen de sa destruction, et que, par conséquent, tout autre élément peut servir au Maître de l'univers pour accomplir un jugement semblable.

Par ces moyens, grec par lesquelles choses le monde périt. Il y a, dans le grec, un pronom au pluriel. On peut le rapporter aux "eaux des cieux et aux eaux de l'abîme," qui, d'après Genèse 7.11, concoururent à produire le déluge. On peut le rapporter aussi, et ce serait plus conforme à notre texte, à l'eau et à la parole de Dieu, double agent de la formation du monde et de sa destruction.
